All my new posts randomly get different categories assigned to it.
-
Anyone else experiencing this? It randomly started 5 days ago. No matter what kind of post I publish, even if I don’t add any categories, around 12 are added once the post is published. It seems to be random on what categories are added as well. I’m able to delete them afterwards but it does feel like a waste of time and it just really weird. Appreciate any help on this!

I see what you mean on your latest post:

I haven’t seen this issue elsewhere, so I am following along to know what this might be about.
-
We have been seeing the same annoying, disturbing, reader-misleading phenomenon since mid-November as well.
-
I made sure to not manually fix a few of them so you’d have some live examples. Attaching:
November Christmas: https://dreager1.com/2024/12/08/november-christmas-review/
The Black Cauldron: https://dreager1.com/2024/12/08/the-black-cauldron-review/
It seems to happen to about 90% of my posts but I notice if I make a post that only has a single category then it doesn’t seem to happen. Most of my posts are reviews though so I’ll have about 3 categories. The movie, the score of the movie, and then the review category.
One thing that may be of some help is I notice that clicking on certain categories will seem to activate a chain effect where the other categories go on with them. Like when I click the review category it activates a bunch of random categories along with it. Maybe some code got tied up on the back-end?

Thanks! Could you please clarify from where you published these posts?
Was it using the WordPress.com Desktop app or the WordPress.com website on a browser such as Google Chrome or the mobile app?
-
Yes, confirming I publish all of the posts through the WordPress.com website. I use Google chrome when logging in and publishing, I haven’t attempted to publish through any other browsers
-
This happens to me too. I create my own tags but then a few more just show up, and I have to delete them. I don’t think there is a way to stop that.
-
@dreager1 Have you been able to resolve your issue using @wanjalabk’s suggestion? Let us know if you’re still experiencing the problem.
-
@wanjalabkI checked and the category isn’t listed as a parent to any of the ones that are showing up. That said, I am able to recreate it now and every time I click on “Reviews” it does check and then uncheck all of the other categories so it does seem like they are synched up somehow. Is there anything other than sub category that can tie them together?
@nebojsajurcic No luck but I think it’s on the right track. The categories do seem to be connected somehow but I can’t find any link between them in the settings.

Yes, I quickly recorded an example. Attaching above: @jordesign

Thanks so much for taking the time to give us that! I’ve been testing this and I haven’t been able to get the same behavior that you showed me to happen. Rather, I can only add or remove one category at a time.
To get some more ideas here, would you mind trying this through one or two of our other supported browsers?
Does this happen with existing posts as well, or is it only new ones?
-
I tried with a bunch of the browsers on there and confirm it happens on all of them.
I also tested on older posts and the glitch happens there as well. If I add any of these categories into it, then the same thing happens with a bunch of those categories appearing inside the post.
-
Thanks for all this checking. We’re doing some test internally too and we’ll be back to you once we have more.
