Hi there,
While it’s not possible to remove the existing footer credit, you can add your own content, along with what is there, including a copyright notice.
However, to add that will require CSS, which is possible once you have updated your site to WordPress.com Premium.
You can see what features are included in our WordPress.comPremium plan, as well as compare with our other plans here: https://wordpress.com/plans/compare
Once you have added that to your site, let me know and I can give you a hand with the CSS you need.
Cheers,

thanks for the quick answer, I don’t intend to go premium for the time being. there is nothing I can do as it is now?

As you do not have the upgrade you can use the Text Widget to add a copyright notice to your sidebar. http://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/text-widget/
Here is an example text you could use as Copyright notice: http://en.support.wordpress.com/prevent-content-theft/#include-a-very-clear-copyright-notice-on-your-blog

I choose to have a copyright page and I provide a link to it in my sidebar in a text widget.
