All videos autoplay in WordPress Reader

Whenever I log in to my WordPress Reader to view posts to which I have subscribed/followed, if any blogger has posted a YouTube video, they ALL autoplay simultaneously, from all the blogs to which I am subscribed, making Reader sluggish and nearly impossible for me to use.

I use Chrome with Windows 7.

I have cleared the cache multiple times and also uninstalled and reinstalled Chrome. No difference.

It also happens when I open a WordPress-based blog in my browser — any and all YouTube videos all autoplay simultaneously. (It happens on Gawker every time, for example — lots of people post videos in comments, and they become an entire cacophony until I can go through and pause each one in comments!

This does not happen with embedded Vimeo videos, only YouTube ones.

This has been going on for more than four months already — I finally decided after trying to find solutions on my own via Google search, etc. to try the Forums here and see if anyone else experiences this. So far, my solution has just been to make sure my speakers are on “Mute” when I open and read blogs from WordPress or on a WordPress platform.

    Anyone know what’s going on?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

That’s not happening to me. I’m using Firefox 24 on a PC.

    (a) Exactly what kind of device you are using to connect to the internet and to WordPress.com?
    (b) Exactly which browser (and version of it) you’re using by checking here if necessary http://www.whatbrowser.org/ ?

I’ll tag this thread for Staff assistance. Please subscribe to the thread so you are notified when they respond and please be patient while waiting.

    Thanks for the response.

I am using Chrome 29 in Windows 7. I am using a PC laptop on a home WiFi connection (it’s a portable hotspot unit, the “MiFi” from Sprint).

One theory I have that I need to test is that I am not up-to-date on Java as my son helped me disable it because of some previous problems — I will go ahead and try to reenable and get the latest version and see if that makes a difference. I’ll report back if it does. Meanwhile, I still have the same problem: opened up WordPress Reader when signing in to respond to this thread and all videos started playing at once.

    I’m using Opera 12.16 & Firefox 24 on a PC with Windows 7

    It’s works fine, to me.

    Hi there,

I do not have any issues with autoplay either, however I did some checking around online and it appears that it is enough of a hassle that there are some extensions which you can install on your browser which will prevent videos from autoplaying.

The tech blog Lifehacker had profiles on a few about a year ago and you might want to check them out:

Thanks a bunch for that Lifehacker link, amightywp. I had seen similar info on my own searches about how to solve the problem, but this was the most specific I had seen for Chrome extensions.

I just installed the FlashFree extension to my Chrome browser, and so far I have QUIET on my WordPress Reader! No more simultaneous video loading and autoplaying! I’ll have to see how it does with other websites, but the problem at least has a Band-Aid for the moment.

    Thanks.

My pleasure! Hopefully it works out for you.

    Have a great one!
