Allan Avery – new WordPress Blog
-
LIZ, Back to Our-Place-In-The-Cosmos. Please disregard everything from here Back to the reply from “supernovia.” I really want to get my BLOG finished and then go back to The Homeowner Website. (Maybe start completely over on that?)
I’m on my last shred of sanity. I keep MESSING with things and “breaking them.” I thot I was good, all the way to the BLOG Page. NOW after my messing: When I open Blog Page – (Any way I open to it) – here is what I see: Four “Posts,” CAP TITLES, in this order top down on screen: ALLAN’S NEW BLOG September 9 – ALLAN’S NEW BLOG July 3 (Blank) – BIG GEOPHYSICAL RISKS July 3 – INTERIM PAUSE Feb 15. And, (except the Blank July 3 ALLAN’S NEW……), they now have Full Text, instead of the short “intro” text and the red “More,” as before. Plus, each one has a different FONT. How to get BACK? To correct the date order, and Rewrite the blank ALLAN’S NEW BLOG. Skipping down now: Here is how I hoped that the BLOG Page would work: First under the heading an explaining that further responses to this Post will be recorded in chronological order here. And that when I Post on a new and different subject, the last one will be moved to a separate screen for previous Posts and comments, listed in order by original title. With a link that list of screens on past Posts. Can it be set up to work that way? It’s
embarrassing to keep asking you, but I do need your help. I’ll have to invent new words for Thank you.

Hi Allan, I can see several responses here with a few questions in them, so I’ll try to address the questions one at a time:
Has Liz Karkowski turned me over to you now
Liz had taken some time off, so I stepped in to help. I recommend creating one thread for each different issue (and only one thread for each issue issue). We have found that’s the most effective and efficient way to get help with your site. When you do that, you’ll likely get help from several different people, but we’re all watching out for you :)

About GoDaddy and moving payments to them over to us — they don’t work with us that way. Sorry about that! They may be willing to give you a partial refund, though. And if you have a domain with them, though, we can help you get that working with a site on our servers.
Also, did you know that because you have WordPress.com Personal, you’re entitled to direct (not forums-based) support, typically over live chat? You can find that here:
http://wordpress.com/help/contact -
Re: the different styles (showing a full post instead of a short excerpt) it sounds like you just changed your site’s theme (which determines its style and layout.) We can help you sort it out.
Please consider getting in touch here: http://wordpress.com/help/contact

Ms Supernovia, THANK YOU!! You’re all equally Wonderful! RE your advice, in order: (1) The Blog Page. I think that IS what I want. A thread for each of my NEW/DIFFERENT Posts. So does the FIRST respondent to a “New” post then go to that “thread.” How/where does it show up??
And then when I want to add a further comment on it myself, How do I do that? I guess I’m asking how do differentiate between my own “follow up” comments on a former Post, and a new Original Post.
Can you tell me the steps in setting it up that WAY? Or maybe setup the basics of that structure, for me?
(2) the differing size fonts etc. on the Blog Page: It just shows my ongoing confusion about what and how to use the side bars. When I Open to our-place-in-the-cosmos ( or other variations of that I’ve got “saved”), they all open to the same, latest “updated” HOME page, With the edit and/or customize links. What is the domain “entry” that I should keep? Should I just keep the Our-Place-In-The-Cosmos version(since it’s that way on Heading.)? (3) Online Help. Nope, I didn’t know. I assume its the http://wordpress.con/help/support. Do you get a different person each time? Maybe not. But if you can give me some response as above, I’ll hereafter discontinue using this forum. Bless you All. Allan -
Ms supernovia, one last time. How t get to “Live Chat”?
In my last msg to Liz I also referenced the brand new Website that I’m also attempting to set up for my Homeowners Association. We’ve got so far with that as to pay $48 for the plan and set up a domain name. Given my problems trying to do that, I thought after writing the above to you that I’d just start over with that from the WordPress site. And Got to PAY (with the CC you have on file that I already paid with. Could a “live chat” person go back and find that? Need to try that too with live chat. :-) Allan -
Looks like everything is paid up and good to go. :)
Since you have WordPress.com personal, you should be able to access live chat at http://wordpress.com/help/contact – can you try that? Or if live chat isn’t available right then, you’ll find an email form.
If you prefer to open a new forum thread instead, here’s a direct link to our new topic form: https://en.forums.wordpress.com/?new=1 Just be sure to use one post per “issue” . I still recommend using live chat instead if you can, though.

Per your good advice, for help with the BLOG Page of my Our-Place-In-The-Cosmos , I’ve had a couple of helpful “step-by-step-here” Chat sessions. About 20 minutes ago I was in the middle of another one, and it plain Stopped. nothing. no explanation. I have now tried about 10 times to get back thru the steps to renew one. I get to screen with looong list of possible “help” sites, and I open “Chat Support” and get nothing. Any Suggestions? I’m struggling with this daily, for montghs.

@allanmerry is the form here blank?
http://wordpress.com/help/contactIf so can you try another browser, such as Firefox or Chrome?

Supernovia, I’m now BACK here on this forum. Much worse problems now after a dozen “Chat” sessions. All about my BLOG Page. (No doubt much if not all “on me,” but truth is I need “hand holding” step-by-step guidance.) As of now my BLOG Page is completely GONE. Disappeared. It may have been something I did just now.
I’ve First got to Get it BACK; show up on the opening HOME Page. How? Can you do that?
Before it plain disappeared, I was trying to deal several Posts I had put up on it. I wanted to change the order in which they showed, and make some revisions to them. First, the content of one of them disappeared, leaving the Title. After that two more completely disappeared, leaving just two: another titled “ALLAN’S NEW BLOG,” and “INTERIM PAUSE.” My “dream” would be to recover them all, rearrange their order, and give them new, current dates. Can you help. I’m very near discouraged, but ready to give up. THANK YOU! Allan Avery our-place-in-the-cosmos.com -
Supernovia, I should have added: Meanwhile, I’ll go back to the “side” instruction to see if I can add a new BLOG Page myself. Allan

Hi @allanmerry, can you remind me which site you are working on? You deleted the one referenced here.
Also, since you are talking about a new problem and a totally different site, if you’d like to continue working in the forums, I recommend opening a new thread here:

I’m now working in my Blog with the “Chat” site.
However I HAVE TO Get the NEW Homeowner Association Website to happen, same time.. That is creeksideinsumner.com. From Scratch. To help a little keeping my head straight I’d like Y’all on this forum help me with that. REALLY from the very Beginning. The standard instruction pages don’t work much for me, I just don’t have enough intuitive-ness (new word – :-) to follow them, and I can’t hear videos. even to try following them. Probably “hand holding” steps again. May I?? Please? Allan Avery. -
Sure, would you like to start with the steps you used before, and let us know where you get stuck?
Do you know what pages you’ll need on the site yet?
-
Hi Supernova, With my 7 pages here, it probably would be a research project to go back and find anything useable. Can we start it over?
To start, the site will need probably need 3 or more pages. Is there a limit? Does the cost of depend on the number?
The way it “comes up” now: creeksideinsumner.com , from when I tried to work on it, is nothing like we had. (Don’t remember how I started, but what came up for me to work on dididn’t look like a screen to start on.)What I’m thinking: The first page Picture would have a picture across the top, maybe with a couple of lines of text in it or under it. BIG snow capped Mtn like the pic we had. Is there a big file of pictures available to pick from? Then, much like my blog, under that heading probably a series of Topic Heading in line across. Some of them, like Index, Officers, mail address, and such, with the content directly below them. Others just a few words and a link to the rest on another page. The rest of the pages with the longer texts by subject. Rules and/or procedures on certain things, etc. Or maybe The WP design process has some other interesting “structure” ideas.
One particular think we considering whether to have on the site, is the text of our Legal “Constitution,” that is, our Recorded, legally titled the Declaration of Covenents, Conditions, and Restrictions. It’s limiting language comes up a lot, and dictates many of the Board’s decisions. With It’s face page would be require 8 or 9 pages. From the Host perspective What do you think? Anyway, tell me where to go first, and see what I can do. :-)) Allan -
Hi Allan –
I’m back :)
It looks like you have things sorted with our-place-in-the-cosmos.com. Is that right?
Since I am playing catch up here I wanted to confirm that first. Then we can move on to where you are at with the new HOA site.
-
Liz, I’m glad your back. With our-place-in-the-cosmos, still problems getting the BLOG Page right. But I have to set it aside and deal only with the Homeowner Association site ” creeksideinsumner.com ” I an the verge of looking for a paid site designer to do it for us. In fact I have a phone interview with one in just 2 hours. (He knows the domain is registered and paid on WP) Here’s what I would tell him about what we need: A very simple site with say 3 or 4 pages to start. At least the first with a picture heading and a couple lines of text in or beside it. The pages would simply each have several information topic headings, with the information under or beside. It is just for HOA Members to find information. Whether it needs to have a “portal” ? for members to post on it- Questions, suggestions etc., and prevision for replies from the site, I don’t know yet. Getting it “Set Up” is the help I need. And then with separate written out, step by step instruction “cheat sheets” provided so I and/or “operator” can remember how to work it. And all the information texts need to be able to be revised, by the “operator.” Is this something you could help he get set up rapidly? Going to the
creeksideinsumner.com You’ll see what I attempted on my own. The srceen it showed me to start completely a mystery to me. Can you take me step by step from the beginning.? Would you be available to do it on “Liive Chat” to speed it up.
And BTW, is there a big file of photographs somewhere we find a snowcapped Mountain pic for the heading. -
LIZ, Separately on Our-place-in-the-cosmos It’s BLOG Page. I’ve been trying to use “Live Chat” for that. Remaining problems: The posts showing are all in different Font. Want to make them all same. The one Titled Allan’s New BLOG I’d like to STAY on the Page, always at the Bottom, as “how it works.” IF it is an accurate description, of the separate Topic “threads/conversations. Will it work that way?
But secondary to the HOA Website. I hope your “time away” was successful as a wonderful escape from this stuff. My Gratitude, Allan
-
Hi Allan –
Yes, live chat is always available to you at https://wordpress.com/help/contact/ and that would be the quickest way to get set up and straightened out. Go ahead and give that a try.
Otherwise, I’m here and happy to continue helping. Do you have the information somewhere of what is going to be on each page of the HOA site?
-
Hi Liz, I’m finally at “Desperate!” I’m now getting heavy impatience bordering on criticism from the Homeowner Association Board, and I HAVE to get that website done.
I think it needs only to be a pretty basic and simple one. I’ll outline it below. But here, My Plea. Can you set it up for me, and with written instruction for how to work each piece, either here or by email? Here’s what I see: Say, four pages to start, more added if needed. On page 1, a photo Header (a snowcapped mountain scene if you can find one; or for me to add in later if not.) Inside the Picture Header: Creekside Neighborhood in Sumner. and right below that WELCOME HOME. Maybe at the head of the rest of the pages a thinner or narrower copy of the pic without the text inside. THEN, below the head on each page, Shown in a horizontal line across the page, and separated from one another, “Boxes,” each 1 or 2 CAP words representing SUBJECT headings. Under each of those, in a narrow vertical column a very short summary of the subject and a “More” button to take the reader to the remainder of that subject on another page. (Some of the “subjects,” like Board Names and Phone numbers, or meeting schedule, could show in full under the Heading.) I don’t know what all those main subject headings will be, and for most of the “longer” I have to write the rest of the text. So the content on all of the pages must be changeable. (And for me to know exactly how; and to write out for whoever follows me.) So the Site is almost entirely to present, and up date, basic information for the Members to be able to find. In fact, maybe on Page 1, the first Heading INDEX listing all the subjects by Page #. The last piece tho: We should also have a CONTACT US Heading, to allow for questions and comments. Which would instruct the questioner to include a response email or other instruction. WE must have the ability to post the response to the questions, when appropriate, on the Website for all.
So, you (if you’re allowed and have the time) or I are building the content of the site “as we go.” Can that be done? And is what I describe above a reasonable “structure” for the site. If you open to creeksideinsumner.com your see where I got on my own. Scrap all. :-) Allan
Is this all a reasonable structure?
