Allan Avery – new WordPress Blog

Kokkieh, I’ve deleted all but 3. The one with the domain ‘ here-inside-the-cosmos ‘ – that is what folks would type in, right? and the first thing they’d see is a “front page” with Our Place in The Cosmos and the picture? And that domain can’t either be removed or have a “name change”? I would like to if possible. I wish I’d picked our-place- etc as the domain name. I’d even prefer just to remove the ” -inside- ” from the name, to shorten it. Anyway, if changes not possible I’ll delete the other two. Then, I could just go back to that single domain on “My Sites”, and start over- or resume wherever I left off before?

  • The one with the domain ‘ here-inside-the-cosmos ‘ – that is what folks would type in, right?

They’ll need to type here-inside-the-cosmos.com, so including the .com

the first thing they’d see is a “front page” with Our Place in The Cosmos and the picture?

    Correct. This page:

    https://cloudup.com/chb0zZprzVe

And that domain can’t either be removed or have a “name change”? I wish I’d picked our-place- etc as the domain name. I’d even prefer just to remove the ” -inside- ” from the name, to shorten it.

Custom domains are registered for a year at a time, so they can’t be edited the way the free address can. If you want to change it, it will require buying a new custom domain and replacing the existing one with the new one.

However, at this point we can still make the switch. I’ve temporarily restored the free domain in your plan so you can register a new domain without paying again. You can do so from this link:

    https://wordpress.com/domain/add/hereinthecosmosdotcom.wordpress.com

After you’ve added the new domain you want, let me know and I can cancel the old one. If I don’t cancel the old one you’ll need to pay for the new one you register.

  • Unknown's avatar

kokkieh (Thanks!!!!!) I went to that link, to do it. May of done it wrong.
(I’m losing my mind. To myself: I CAN Do This!) Now there’s a 4th site, the new one I guess, on My Sites. It reads: hereinthecosmosblog.word press.com Would visitors have to type in all that? Pretty long. If not, what do they type in? Could the word blog be taken out, to shorten it? What ever: can the “title” of the new site be “Our Place In The Cosmos?” When I get it right and you delete the other(s), can I go there and start from the beginning?

  • Unknown's avatar

Kokkieh, Again forgot: I do want the $2.99/month version with the new site

  • Unknown's avatar

Kokkieh, WAIT, closing this, I got a screen saying
your new blog at our-place-in-the-cosmos.com is being set up.
(and It may take up to 72 hours…..)

HEY, That exactly what I wanted !! Maybe I did do it right. ???

  • Right. You now have the following:

hereinthecosmosdotcom.wordpress.com with the Personal plan and the domain, here-inside-the-cosmos.com, which is where we started, and you have added a second domain to that site, our-place-in-the-cosmos.com

Can I go ahead and cancel here-inside-the-cosmos.com now as discussed above? Then that original site will have the domain our-place-in-the-cosmos.com, and that is what people will type to see it.

Then you indeed created another site, hereinthecosmosblog.wordpress.com, and you bought the personal plan for that site. If you want to stick with only the original blog I can cancel and refund the plan on that site, and you can delete the free address again if you don’t want it.

  • Unknown's avatar

Kokkieh, Yes, please Do cancel the hereinsidethecosmos.com. Then with the our-place-in-the-cosmos domain name, would it be the $36/year plan, which is what I want? Then Yes please do also cancel the other hereinthecosmosblog.wordpress.com domain. (Then, I should delete the free address on that? I only want one blog site, so unless it serves some other purpose, I’ll do that.) So back to our-place-in-the-cosmos.com. I think I already may have put in some of the “set up” steps already. If so, can I go back to it and continue where I left off, or would it be empty for me to Start over from “scratch”? Either way, I’ll do my best to follow the steps in https://learn.wordpress.com. (Whomever you “report to” in the WP org: they need to know how much help you had to give me, due to MY failing brain. :-)

  • Right, I’ve cancelled the extra domain, and also cancelled and refunded the extra personal plan.

Your site is at hereinthecosmosdotcom.wordpress.com, with the custom domain, our-place-in-the-cosmos.com That is the site where you have already added some content, so no need to start over.

To visit your site, people must type our-place-in-the-cosmos.com into their browsers.

To edit that site, click on My Site and select it, or you can get there directly via this link:

    https://wordpress.com/stats/our-place-in-the-cosmos.com

    *****

Your extra site you created has the free address, hereinthecosmosblog.wordpress.com If you want to delete that site, you can do it via this page:

    https://wordpress.com/settings/general/hereinthecosmosblog.wordpress.com

  • Unknown's avatar

Kokkieh, Thank you, over and over! (As you see, I took a break for several days. Maybe this will be the last :-) For the “keeper” site,
our-place-in-the-cosmos – I want the $36/yr Personal version, Ok? Then on My Sites, I see TWO others with hereinthecosmos. So I’m to remove both of them. I started with the first one; found “delete site” at the bottom of the page. Clicked on that, past the “be sure” box, to a page that I’m nervous about. Is there anything I need to do there besides go through and find the final delete? Does that change anything that I want to keep in the our-place-in-the-cosmos site? Ok then I’ll delete the second here-in-the-cosmos one the same way? Finally, also on My Sites there’s the allanmerry.wordpress…. site. Do I keep that one, and if so what do there?

  • Unknown's avatar

Kokkieh, I tried to go ahead and delete the hereinthecosmosblog.wordpress.com Site, and it wouldn’t let me . Using that page address at the bottom of your response today: “Delete site” led thru a series of other screens: upgrades/manage purchases – cancel subscription & refund (twice) – Tell us Why & Where are going – (with boxes to fill in) – Could we have done anything better – cancel & refund. After all that, a screen with Red Strip “Can’t be done. Contact support.” ??? next. Also still wondering: My Sites shows 4 sites. Besides this one that wouldn’t delete, is there any other that should be deleted? Meanwhile, I’ll go back to work on our-place-in-the-cosmos to finish it. Allan A.

  • Unknown's avatar

Kokkieh (or someone), Re my 4 sites ” our-place-in-the-cosmos ” The one I want to KEEP. I tried to go ahead and work on the one myself. I have completely screwed up and I AM AT A COMPLETE DEAD END SOMEONE HAS TO DELETE EVERYTHING IN THAT DOMAIN SO I CAN START OVER. I have tried my best with learn wordpress, including going all through All the “Lingo” page, and some of the steps use terms not there. PLEASE TE.LL ME HOW TO START OVER WITH THIS DOMAIN. I can try OVER again myself, but I may NEED continuous help step-by-step here. I AM DEEPLY ASHAMED AND APOLOGETIC OF MY INABILITY.

  • Howdy!

our-place-in-the-cosmos.com is linked to hereinthecosmosblog.wordpress.com. Each custom domain needs a free .wordpress.com site to attach to. This is setup correctly. Your visitors will only see your custom domain as long as it is set to be the Primary Domain (which it is).

I see that there’s another free .wordpress.com site on your account which has been upgraded with WordPress.com Personal. Please confirm that you’d like me to issue a refund for WordPress.com Personal on https://hereinthecosmosblog.wordpress.com/.

You were not able to delete these sites because they have upgrades connected to them still. Prior to deleting a site all of the upgrades must be removed.

Be careful, because site deletion is a permanent option. If you delete a .wordpress.com site we aren’t able to restore it for you.

It sounds like you’d like to start over on
our-place-in-the-cosmos.com? I can help you clear the content on that site, giving you a fresh start. Let me know if this is how you’d like to proceed.

Liz (if can be so informal), THANK YOU SO, SO, SO MUCH!! Yes, I do want to delete that “2nd” one- hereinthecosmosblog.wordpress.com/
And YES if you can tell me, and/or help me, clear out and start over on the “keeper” one: Our-place-in-the-cosmos . I thot I was making some progress myself on it, and then I totally ruined the “Opening Page” that I had set, with my photo and other text. It looked fine except that I wanted to change some of the “sample” text on it. But I think I had not actually tried “Open” to see it. So, I clicked Open- and there’s my Photo
(and not the one I thot I had set) FILLING the entire screen as background with all the text on top of It. Instead of the chosen background format and my small pic at the top. That’s when I put my head down on the desk to cry. :-) If there is a way I can start clearing everything out myself, can you tell me how? I couldn’t follow “learn.wordpress” but I’ll try the other two you mentioned also. One thing I will REALLY need to know is how to go back and add to or change things I’ve initially set up. I’ll try to do this without you being a full day job with me here. OH, and- the other site that is on “My Sites” ” allanmerry ……something Does it serve some necessary function along with the “main” one? If not, could you delete it too? And anything else I mistakenly put up there. At one point in my sorry history here I had 7 Sites showing there.
I hereby award you your “Senior Lifesaving Rating” and Certificate. (I’ll be on my blog. :-)

  • It’s no problem at all! We want to help you build the site that you’ve envisioned :)

I want to talk about the duplicate .wordpress.com sites that are on your account. One option is to delete them. However, you may find it helpful to keep a few test sites on your account. This way you can experiment a tad without the fear of messing something up on the main site. Each account can own multiple sites without any trouble at all.

These duplicate sites can be marked private so that only you can view them.

You’ve chosen The Gateway Theme and it is displaying your image on the homepage as it is designed to do. Certain types of images may read better than others, natural landscapes vs portraits for example. Each theme on WordPress.com has a corresponding instructional page and demo site.

For The Gateway Theme here are the instructions and demo.

I see that your home page has a different header image than the other pages on the site. Do you want to change the image of you in the yellow shirt on the home page or the city image on the other pages?

The yellow shirt image is set as a featured image on your home page. To access this go to My Sites > Pages > Home > Featured Image (on the left).

All of your posts and pages are accessible at anytime by going to My Sites > Posts or My Sites > Pages. Click on the title of the post or page you wish to edit and it will open up the editor.

The site logo is the rectangle image of you in the blue shirt. You can edit that from My Sites > Customizer > Site Identity. Or use this link.

“Welcome to WordPress” is a content option on your theme, called the hero title. You can edit or remove that text by going to My Sites > Customizer > Theme Options > Homepage Template.

Another option you may consider starting out with a more basic theme and then moving towards a more complex theme as you become more comfortable. Switching themes can occur at any time with just a few clicks in The Customizer, all of your content will transfer to the new theme if or when you decide to switch.

Tell me a little bit about what you are envisioning for the site. Will the emphasis be on images or text? Are you looking for certain features? Are you looking to create a blog or a website?

One last thing to think about (for right now) is what you want your visitors to see when your page loads for them. You can create a static front page or have your posts publish to your home page. Give this a read Set a Static “Home” Page (Front Page)

I realize this is a bunch of information. Once I have a good idea of what you’re envisioning for the site I can help you create it.

Liz, THANKS!!! Here I’m going to address each of the paragraphs of your message, one at a time, but without trying it all out first, so I don’t have to “leave this page” and then start all over when I come back. I’ll take your advice to keep one extra, private site to practice on. I’d like to be the shorter of the 2 hereinthecosmos ones. So would you delete the other one, and can you make the practice one private? or how would I do that? Then the 3rd extra site: “allanmerry…wp admin” ..is that needed, or useful somehow? If not, please delete it too. Themes: When I open up our-place-in-the-cosmos, what I get is a full screen pic of me in the yellow shirt, with all the lines of text overlaid on that, and the pic of me in the blue shirt in the box at the top. NOT! I think when I started out I had the Gateway theme. But then got the same but with a darker, more “3rd World” type of urban scene. That’s what prefer if I can, but the Gateway would be ok. But, I want the small pic in the box at top to be me in the yellow shirt. :-) I glad I’ll be able to change all the text lines to what I want. Hope I don’t mess that up too. If the added Welcome to WordPress page is a place I can put in text about who I am and what the blog is about, etc., I definitely want that. Is that the “Home page” or is the Theme page the home page. I’m confused about the “pages.” (eg. Header page, front page, home page?) It sounds like I can start out with beginning text version of my “theme” and then change or substitute an improved version later. That’s what I like to do. Emphasis- images or text: Text, definitely. Your last point: Static Home page? Is that the first, theme page? or the “about” page? If it’s static, I’d like it to have something about my new post, maybe a “title” and then a ling to read it? What to most bolggers do? Thanks again!

  • Hi there :)

You can follow these instructions to delete the unwanted site:
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/delete-site/

The extra test site can be marked private by following these instructions:
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/privacy-settings/

But, I want the small pic in the box at top to be me in the yellow shirt

This is a quick fix. Go to My Sites > Customize (gray button next to themes) > Site Identity > Site Logo – change site logo. You will need to upload the image of you in the yellow shirt again as It appears to have been removed from the media library. Be sure to save your changes.

Would you rather have your visitors first see all of your posts when they come to your page? OR would you rather they come to the same page with a bit of information on it, for example, more about the site, and then click the blog page link from the menu to read your posts?

More information on a static front page can be found here:
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/front-page/

Here is our support guide on editing pages:
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/

You can edit the text on your home page by going to My Sites > Pages > Home > Edit – make your changes, preview and/or save changes.

Liz, your first “delete site” link- apparently worked on the first try- the “allanmerry” site. Tho it is still listed at My Sites. Open it there and it says ALLANMERRY NOTHING HERE. So maybe it hasn’t been ENTIRELY GONE. ?? 2nd Try: hereinthecosmos.wordpress.com. Back to the delete site link again. It says first delete any Upgrades. And Them delete all Content. I got to the manage upgrades page again and apparently it was is a “”Premium” ? The Manage upgrades link then stopped working. I’m closing out here to go back and try more.

  • Unknown's avatar

Liz, Allan again. This isn’t working, and I don’t know what to do. I went back to try to correct the First page, theme page, homepage, whatever it’s called. Back to what I set up originally. No luck. Still my full screen “yellow shirt” photo. Couldn’t change it. Want the “standard” one with the big city full screen background. I’ve been sitting here for more than 2 hours. I will try again next on getting rid of upgrades on the two excess sites. But whatever I accomplish on that, the next time I start up I’m going to need ongoing person on the phone and on my phone with me. If I’m going to be able to have a WordPress Blog. I hope you can do that.

  • Hi Allan –

No worries! We will get it straightened out :) Let’s take care of the design elements first that you’ve been working on. Designing the site is more fun than deleting extra sites anyways!

Take a look at your homepage now:

    Home

Is this what you were envisioning? The city scape background with the yellow shirt logo pic? Now, all of the pages on your site match, they all have the same city scape background.

This change can be made by editing the feature image on the page. I added a few generic photos to your media library to accomplish this. To change it in the future, go to My Sites > Pages > Home – click the three dots – click edit > Featured Image tab on the left.

Anytime a user comes to your site, they are going to see this home page first. If you’d like to say more about yourself, or give a general overview of the site, you can add that right on this page. To do that, you’ll need to edit the page (not post). Go to My Sites > Pages > Home – click the three dots – click edit – add your text and save the changes.
This link will take you there directly: https://wordpress.com/page/our-place-in-the-cosmos.com/2

More information on pages is found in this guide: https://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/

This guide will walk you through the editor and the different options:
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/visual-editor/

    Re posts:

Once a new post is published via https://wordpress.com/posts/ or by going to My Sites > Posts > Add New — It will be posted on your Blog Page. If you scroll down to your menu you will see – Home – About – Contact – Blog – These are the 4 pages linked into your menu right now. This is completely customizable. All of your posts will be on the Blog Page based on your current settings. You’ll see some example posts there now:https://our-place-in-the-cosmos.com/blog/

You’ll want to delete those when you get ready to publish your first post.

What do you want to work on next?

  • Unknown's avatar

Liz, again Thanks! Yes that’s the Style of opening page I want, but I’d prefer the “Gateway” theme for the full screen background, if I can change to that. But, do I want the cityscape background (with it’s three lines of text) over the full screen? Can I have it, say, just the top half and use the bottom for more introductory “who & what’s this about” text.
I’d like to do that, with a second page for more of that text. The “pages” terminology is still over my head. I can try some more of that site and see what I can do. Meanwhile, I want to get all three the other sites deleted. It will be less confusing for me. I tried the “delete sites” links you gave me again today. The “allanmerry” site I may be “mostly” gone, but it’s still listed on My Sites. Open it and it says ALLAN MERRY – Nothing Here. The other two hereinthecosmos sites: nothing. Couldn’t get to them to delete “extras” like the link directed to do first, nor to “delete all contents” as it instructed. I’m stuck there. Can you delete those sites (including the “allanmerry” one) somehow for me? A 55 yo son who works some with IT stuff will come over Friday afternoon to see if he can help wit the other parts of it all.
