Allan Avery – new WordPress Blog
-
Good Morning Allen –
our-place-in-the-cosmos.com is using The Gateway Theme.
Here are the theme instructions for Gateway: https://wordpress.com/themes/gateway
And the site demo: https://gatewaydemo.wordpress.com/When you login to your WordPress.com account go to My Sites > Themes.
The first 2 lines over your cityscape on the home page that read “Our Place In The Cosmos” and “ACCEPTING REALITY” are able to be edited from My Sites > Customize > Site Identity.
The “Welcome to WordPress.com” and “Use this template to give your readers a bit of important information.” with the pink Call to Action button are part of the Hero Content. This can all be customized or removed by going to My Sites > Customize > Theme Options > Homepage Template. We can simply delete all of this. It isn’t an ideal place for full sentences or ‘about’ text.
Pages are just the various screens that a user will see. On your site right now you have a Home page, About page, Contact page, and Blog page. When users come to your site they will always see your Home page first based on the current settings. Any posts that you add to your site will publish on the Blog page.
When you scroll down the site you will see your menu and then below it “HOME” title with some generic text. This is the text of your Home page. This is where I would add that ‘about’ information you’ve mentioned. There’s an edit link towards the bottom of the text you can use to add your desired text. Or, you can get there by going to My Sites > Pages > Home > click the three dots > edit page.
As you keep scrolling down the Home page you’ll see 3 generic Featured Content posts. I can help you remove these for now. These are a feature of your theme, but not a requirement. The same for the Video space at the bottom. Let me know what you’d like to do with these.
I want to double and triple check the details of the site deletion with you before I delete them.
You are going to keep hereinthecosmosdotcom.wordpress.com which is connected to our-place-in-the-cosmos.com (this is the site we are working on). Each custom domain, like our-place-in-the-cosmos.com needs a free .wordpress.com site, like hereinthecosmosdotcom.wordpress.com to be connected with. This is all setup correctly.
You would like for me to delete the three extra sites from your account?
1. hereinthecosmosblog.wordpress.com
2. hereinthecosmoscom.wordpress.com
3. allanmerry.wordpress.comIf you are still interested in keeping a test site, I’d suggest keeping allenmerry.wordpress.com for that purpose. Once we delete them you won’t be able to ever use these specific site addresses again, and allenmerry.wordpress.com may be of interest in keeping since it matches your username. It won’t be as confusing since the site address is not as similar as the other sites. Let me know.

Good morning, Liz, As you see, I decided I needed to take a break; and work on the other thing I’m trying to learn. (A smart phone. :-( – :-)
And tomorrow I’m leaving town and State for a week. But when I get back, I want to get back with you. You’ve been the BEST for me to be able to follow; and I don’t want to wear out my welcome. Anyway, after your last post, my Son came over to see if he could also help. (Decades ago he took the MS engineers training course, tho he doesn’t work in IT.)
He apparently succeeded in removing all of the content from the three extra sites and deleted them. (And now I kinda wish I’d kept the allanmerry@wordpress one.. Gone forever.) Then we worked on my home page some more. He got the Gateway background in sharper focus (with my “yellow shirt” pic in the small box at top. And then he was able to reduce that background to top half page with the 3 lines of the Gateway text on top of that in white. (I’ll want to change the text in the bottom two of those text lines.) Then he got a solid color (medium red) on the bottom half, where I wanted to put in a short About text piece. Then he had to leave. And I tried to make a couple of small changes, MESSED IT ALL UP again. So that what I want to re-create when I get back home. If you can recreate the home page described, of give me instructions how. I’ll check in with you again then. THANK YOU !!! Allan A. -
Hi Allen –
No worries at all – we will get it straightened out.
Are you talking about the red colored bar that appears behind “Accepting Reality” on the home page?
Unfortunately I didn’t see the work your son did so I don’t have a great reference point.
By going to My Sites > Customize > Site Identity
https://wordpress.com/customize/our-place-in-the-cosmos.com
You can edit the “Our place in the cosmos” and “accepting reality” fields. This section is meant for a brief sentence or phrase, rather than a paragraph.
This is the post you’ve added to the site: https://wordpress.com/post/our-place-in-the-cosmos.com/35
That post is going to drop down as you publish new posts and it won’t be as visible to visitors of the site. My suggestion is to add that bit of information to your About page or to make this a sticky post so that it always keeps up top like it is now.

Liz, I’m back, after Thanksgiving today; and I hope you’re still with me. With the last two impossible months over, I’ll spend a week or 10 days on this (plus the other mystery to my failing mind- how to set up and use my swell new “smart” phone). But just now: trying the bottom 2 links in your reply I got to my “home page.” I switched the background image to one I like best (a kind of 3rd world, dark, cityscape.) But I couldn’t edit anything below it. I do want to re-write that. Couldn’t find an “edit” button. I would also like to remove the second, larger and different “yellow shirt” image from the bottom part. And If possible also like enlarge the “Top of Page” image another inch or so downward, to reduce the bottom text area. I’m leaving for family thgsvg dinner right now, so I’ll get back with you in a day or so. Bless you for putting up with me. Shirley :-) after we get this page done, I’ll be able to do more by myself on the other pages. You think? :-) Allan A.
-
Allan –
I hope you had a nice holiday!
But I couldn’t edit anything below it. I do want to re-write that. Couldn’t find an “edit” button.
To edit the post titled, Acknowledging and Accepting Reality, you’ll need to start by clicking My Sites in the upper left corner, then find > Acknowledging and Accepting Reality and click Edit underneath the post. Here you can edit the post.
I would also like to remove the second, larger and different “yellow shirt” image from the bottom part
This image can be removed by going to the post editor for Acknowledging and Accepting Reality as outlined above, then on the left, find Featured Image > Click the X in the upper right corner of the small image in your left side bar. Then save updates.
Which page would you like your posts to publish on? Right now, they are publishing on your Home page. This is totally fine. However, we may want to take the Blog page off of the menu listing since the posts are not going to be published there. What do you think?
And If possible also like enlarge the “Top of Page” image another inch or so downward, to reduce the bottom text area
The recommended size of this image is 2560 × 640 pixels. I will be happy to work on this for you.

Saint Liz, (The Church Of My Lucky Stars has Approved the Nomination. It’s now Official!) Re your last post. Here is the url that I have saved to open the blog: hereinthecosmosdotcom.wordpress.com/customize Is it the same page/picture you see? If so I may have messed it again. But what I see: The half page background and boxed picture, and the text
lines Our Place In Then Cosmos – and – Acknowledging and Accepting Reality- and the menu line below, all good if still there. Still want to remove the text I wrote into the bottom half. And re-write all. Maybe move the bottom of upper section down an inch, for more room. I had no luck editing out the bottom text either way you suggested. I don’t want my posts, or comments received, on the front page. So this is a “Static” page? After I rewrite and enter new “who/about” text there,
maybe I can move on to the other pages. On those, will “custom” or “regular” be eaiser? I ought to be able to do this myself! But the Format of “Learn WordPress” just boggles me. That 1st Menu there! But Home page first. Is it possible to get on the Phone Together? OH and LAST: could you write out for me the exact “string” that a visitor would type into their browser go to my blog? Allan -
Allan –
There is a checkbox that was unselected which is why “Our Place In The Cosmos
– ACKNOWLEDGING AND ACCEPTING REALITY” disappeared on you. I’ve turned the site title and tagline back on. You’ll find these options at My Sites > Customize > Site Identity OR by clicking this link: https://hereinthecosmosdotcom.wordpress.com/wp-admin/customize.phpYour posts are set to publish on the Blog page. Any new posts that you publish are going to display under the Blog tab in the menu.
To edit the Home page text you’ll want to go to My Sites > Pages > Home > Make your changes and then save them by clicking the blue Update box.
-
Liz, Re your 9:30 am post. As described below, neither one worked.
I have saved in my PC favorites two address links that will open “my blog.” The one I named our-place-in-the-cosmos now has -customize added to it. When I open w/that I get the proper Front page, but no “My Sites” link, and no edit link. So no way to delete and rewrite the text on the bottom half. The other one opens not to the front page but a what must be a “setup” page, but with a My link; which I tried: My Sites > Pages > Home. Couldn’t find an “:edit” there it wouldn’t edit either.
I tried other things on the left side of that page too, and I may have messed the Home page and put an “Enter Comments Here” onto it, which I don’t want. I’ll close here and go back and see how it opens again and then get back to you. Allan -
Liz, OK I’ve REALLY done it now. LOST THE “MY BLOG” addresses from my PC favorites. Please send me the url for the Our Place In The Cosmos site – and the allanmerry.wordpress.admin one too? And are only those sites still there?
I had no recorded any of this is my “Paper Web Links” book yet. BAD :-( I will stop being so stupid. I’ll write everything now. But before I did that, I tried again with the “set up steps” column on the lelt side of the Front page, and still couldn’t figure out to edit and replace that bottom text on the Image/Front page. What am I doing wrong?? :-))
-
Liz, Thanks- now “He’s Baaaaak! (I’m using up your whole shift. :-() Still can’t find an “edit” option, to clear out and rewrite the bottom of the Front page, on that page as it comes up. Or on the page from https:// hereinthecosmosdotcom.wordpress.com/wp-admin/customize.php. On that page, the left side menu there- nothing I’ve tried will allow me to an “edit” on the front page. Can you figure out the specific steps where I’m going wrong on that menu?
Oh and would you please “write out” for me exactly what a Visitor would type in- ?browser, or url line? – to go to my blog? So Visitors might want to set up a short cut file. Yet more Blessings from My Lucky Stars!

Good Morning –
is the your blog address. That is what your users should enter into their browsers to load your blog.
Your post was set as an excerpt which is why you were having trouble editing the text. I’ve removed that option so now you can edit it by clicking this link: https://wordpress.com/post/our-place-in-the-cosmos.com/35 Remember, you’ll need to be logged into your account -OR- you can go to My Sites > Posts > Acknowledging and Accepting Reality > Edit.
Acknowledging and Accepting Reality is a post. Currently we have your posts set to publish on your Blog page. That is the Blog tab in your menu.
You are also seeing Acknowledging and Accepting Reality on the front page of our-place-in-the-cosmos.com because we haven’t designated a specific page to be your HOME page.
I’ve added a page titled Home, and set it as your front page. Go ahead and add the text you wish for visitors to see when they land on your page at this link: https://wordpress.com/page/our-place-in-the-cosmos.com/166
Or by going to My Sites > Pages > Home > Edit
Now, when you load your site you are not going to see your post, Acknowledging and Accepting Reality, listed on the front page. Have no fear – it is not gone – rather it is at the Blog tab in the menu.

(Huh, what happened there. I disappeared what I’d started to write.) Which was: Liz BIG THANKS, AGAIN. I do want the first page visitors see to be the “Image and background” page and the text I’m writing for the bottom, with “edit, right?” But I shouldn’t my “new posts” and Visitor comments be on the Blog page, with the link to it on the first page? The “edit” works now, and I’m now working that text. Won’t that thus be the “HOME” page? My first try writing there was dumb; and I will re-write. (This is the part where I have to learn to WRITE “blog style.”) I did a “save” to re-work it, but no Publish. Is that 2nd blue ” https://wordpress…..” link in your post what visitors will always have to type in? Or is there something shorter that will get them to me? Then when that First/Home page is done and I go on to the other page: must I “publish” before going on to the res? Or is there a way to get the whole thing set up first? Do I still need to use the “Customize” to go on with the other page?. And do I go on to the other pages by opening with the My Site screen, and the left side menu there? Any more tips I need to hope I can go on there without so much of your time.
-
Hi Allan –
I do want the first page visitors see to be the “Image and background” page and the text I’m writing for the bottom, with “edit, right?”
Yep. You are going to edit that page content by going to My Sites > Pages > Home > Edit and then be sure to save your updates with the blue ‘Update’ button on the left of the screen.
Or is there something shorter that will get them to me?
Your visitors just need to type
our-place-in-the-cosmos.com
in their browsers. That is your domain URL.
Then when that First/Home page is done and I go on to the other page: must I “publish” before going on to the res?
There’s no rule that needs followed. You can edit any page or post at any time. The Publish button makes it go live on the site, otherwise it will stay in Draft mode.
Do I still need to use the “Customize” to go on with the other page?
Nope. Pages and Posts can be edited by clicking My Sites > Pages or Posts. You do not need to access the Customizer for these.
And do I go on to the other pages by opening with the My Site screen, and the left side menu there?
Yes, this is exactly right. You only need to click on My Sites > Pages or Posts (whichever you are looking to edit or add). There’s no need to access the Customizer to work on these.
I’ll be here if you run in to trouble :)
-
My Hero Liz, Allan, just to let you know I’ve been “on break” since your last post, Christmas preps, and trying to learn my First “Smart” Phone. (It’s smarter than I am, so far. :-) It’s nice to know you’re there when I get back finishing the Blog setup. Merry Christmastime!
-
Good Morning –
Anytime you reply here it goes directly to me. I’ll be around to answer questions as they come up. Have a great Holiday!
-
Liz, ME again. After my SECOND long break to handle other things, now I’ve maybe forgotten some of your instruction. With the “Front” Page all set with the image and 2 lines of text, what I want to do now is add some text- a fair bit- on that page below the image. ( An introduction to the About page :-) But the red “edit” down there doesn’t work. How do I get to write text down there? Once I can start there, do I just start typing, or something else? My usual big Thank You’s: Without you I will not have a blog. :-) No pressure! You’re just the best.
-
Hi Allan –
Welcome back!
The text that you are looking to add is going to be a part of the Home page. You can get to the edit screen through the following sequence.
My Site > Pages > Home > click the three dots to the right > click Edit
You can also use this link to get there:
https://wordpress.com/pages/our-place-in-the-cosmos.comThat screen is going to look like this:
https://cloudup.com/cNDQRDCkX6zYou will add your text there and then click the blue Update button on the left to save the changes and make it go live on the site.
Once you are finished, open up a new browser tab, and add the site URL to check it out.
-
Saint Liz, I’ve now added and saved the text I wanted on the Front page, below the image etc. When I open it, it is there, left margin aligned. Is there a way to center it, so it will be center aligned when opened?
Also, I added “FOR POSTS GO TO BLOG PAGE” Is that the way most do it? Or have them on the Front Page? If that, then do “visitors” see just the Post when they open it? How does that work, and what would you advise? Then on the other Pages to see what I can do! THANKS !!!
Lay Parishioner Allan” -
Hey Allan –
I hope you’ve been well!
Is there a way to center it, so it will be center aligned when opened?
It looks like you figured this out already. When I open up your site, I see the text on the Home page is center aligned.
On the top bar of your post editor you will see these three icons
these are your left align, center align, and right align options. If you need to shift a whole body of text you can just highlight what you need to change and then use these buttons to move it in one click.I added “FOR POSTS GO TO BLOG PAGE” Is that the way most do it? Or have them on the Front Page?
When folks go to your blog, https://our-place-in-the-cosmos.com/, they are going to see your menu which includes your Blog page.
It is fine to include it as additional text at the bottom as you’ve done. Alternative phrasing could be something like, “Check out my Blog page to read more”.
I did go ahead and throw in the link to the Blog page so that a user could click right there if they wanted to get to your Blog page.
From what I am seeing, it looks like you just need to add a bit of text to your About page now. You’ll go to My Sites > Pages > About > edit to do this. Then click the blue update button to save the changes.
Once you finishes up the About page you have all 4 pages done.
1. Home
2. About
3. Contact
4. BlogWhen you want to add a post (not a page) you’ll go to My Sites > Posts > Add New. Once you publish it, it is going to be listed on the Blog page tab.
-
Liz, Elderly Allan back again after another break. I hope I haven’t messedup what you did and what you now see, after I Finally composed what I want on the “Home” page. But I’m afraid it is too long to show on a single screen. Can you tell? I it is, would/could the visitor scroll down to see the rest? I’d prefer it all on the one screen. If I’d have to rewrite to shrink it I’ll need to decide. Is there any way to shrink the few horizontal blank spaces on the page to help it fit? But beyond that. I’m Stumped about how to go on the ABOUT or CONTACT or BLOG pages. Do I stay in the “Customize” mode? Or Not? I cannot undersrand how to go down the MENUES that show up on the left side of the screen, when I try to go on to the ABOUT page. Can you give me some beginning steps? Like what some of them are, which ones I need or which to skip, etc? Like for example the “Background.” Do the other pages have a Background? The way you help me, restating what I want or need next, and then describing what to do, has worked for me. Bless you!!!!! I want to do This. :-)
