Allan Avery – new WordPress Blog

  • Unknown's avatar

Liz, Back on the Case :-)) Per your advice, I’m now Opening to here-in-the-cosmos Only via WordPress.com Log In. Here a way to try and describe “what I’m seeing,” and “what I’d want it to be, if possible.” I’ll go one PAGE at a time; “What I see (1) when I open, and (2) when I click edit and get to the edit page. 1st HOME. @ Open: the Original Image- dark city background with Me Yellow Shirt pic. There’s another Yellow Shirt pic that shows less of the wood frame. Would like to switch to it. Same with the pic square, upper left under Image, the other Yellow shirt pic. @Edit. Same changes, all other ok as is. ABOUT @ Open. The same Original Image. I want it only on HOME page. On the other three pages: The Yellow Flowers Image on white background; ABOUT CONTACT & BLOG. The upper left Picture square box: want the blue shirt pic. And same on all three. @Edit- same changes. All else ok as is. CONTACT @ Open Want yellow flowers image, and Blue shirt pic upper left under image. Remove the text there? There is no “Form” with the information. @Edit- SAME. No form, either blank or filled. BLOG @Open & Edit. Same Image change to yellow flowers; and blue shirt in upper left square. Shows 3 lines text, then “More.” Scroll way down to “enter your Comment.” I want to completely revise & shorten the text I had entered there. So it will all go right under the Image and not require a click to a 2nd page. Would like to have “Enter Comment” moved farther up, under the Image and the short text. I assume the person just starts Writing in that slot? And then goes to some “send” command. OK, what’s a new Thank You? I can never say that enough to you! Hang in with me.

Liz, Wait, last Question HOW DO I “SAVE,” correctly and permanently, when I’m working on the PAGES? The “Posts” that I deleted? What/where did I do wrong? Allan

  • Good morning Allan –

We can add the yellow flowers as the header image on the About, Contact, and Blog pages by enabling the Homepage Template on your Home page. Doing this changes the look of the Home page slightly. This also gives you two additional lines of text, completely optional, that you can add to. You’ll see where it says, “PUT YOUR TEXT HERE” and below that, “OR, PUT IT HERE”.

To edit the text in those boxes you’ll need to open up your customizer. You do that by going to My Sites > Customize > Theme Options
Or, use this link: https://hereinthecosmosdotcom.wordpress.com/wp-admin/customize.php and select Theme Options.

This is the only solution to having 2 different header images on the site like you have requested.

For reference, here is the demo site with the Gateway theme: https://gatewaydemo.wordpress.com/

As for the blue shirt picture. I have added this to as the featured image on the About and Contact pages. You’ll see it in the upper left corner when you click on those pages from your menu.

The blue shirt picture is not going to display the same way on your Blog page, because this page is the host for each new post you add to the site. It doesn’t work quite the same as the others. Do you have any questions about that?

To save your work on new posts or pages, just click the blue button from the left hand menu. Here’s a picture of what that looks like: https://cloudup.com/cqX0DGYb-Pi
Posts and pages also work on an autosave method, so the work will not be lost if you forget to click the blue button. It will not be published, but saved as a draft.

We can’t move the “leave a reply” box up closer to the post. This is how the theme is designed. Anyone leaving a comment on your post just adds it right to that box.

You will receive a notification anytime a new comment is left on your posts.

I think I covered all of the questions, but let me know if there’s anything that needs further clarification :)

Liz, This morning, I OPEN with WordPress.com > Log In > My Site > It’s a Completely different page: The “dark city” background, with “Yellow shirt” pic, ok. BUT, Also in that “Image” space, PUT YOUR TEXT HERE. Below that a rust color background with OR PUT IT HERE. > Scroll down: There’s the text I want right below the Image.

Maybe we need to Start Over. ERASE ALL my truly confusing messages to you. Then HERE. Just Say what I Want On each PAGE, one page at a time:

    (1) HOME page – Image: “Dark city” background w/my Yellow Shirt Pic. (The one with less wood frame if I/You can find it.) Below the Image, the “pages” line: HOME ABOUT CONTACT BLOG. Next below that – in the upper left of the space the Square “Blue Shirt” pic. From there down, all the Text that I had last re-written there, working in edit, and that I “Updated” there. (Is that how to “save”?) (2) ABOUT page – Image: Just the “Yellow FLOWERS,” either full width or on white background. No Picture or Text in the Image. (That yellow “daisys” image I had found in the very beginning, and are on a page of Image choices that I got to in “Customize >edit) Below that Image, in the upper left of the space, the “Blue Shirt” pic. Then the Text I had written and “updated” there. Margins as shown. The double space list of “Topics” centered. (3) CONTACT page. Somewhere I did fill in a “form” of that page. Repeat: Allan Avery – (redacted). Any other?? (4) BLOG page. Same “Yellow flowers” Alone. As ABOUT & CONTACT pages. Right below, upper left, the same “blue Shirt” pic. Right below that, the “Enter your Comment Here” space. Can I add some Very short Text below that? Is there Anything else that must be there?

Can YOU make all this happen for me? Or do you have to tell me “Shape Up! You can do this yourself. Just Follow My Instructions!” :-) Allan

  • Hi Allan –

    (1) HOME page – Image: “Dark city” background w/my Yellow Shirt Pic. (The one with less wood frame if I/You can find it.)

The large city with mountains image has not changed. It is just bigger now so it looks a tad different on the site. We had to switch the Home page of the site over to the Home Page Template in order to accommodate the yellow flower header on the other pages. As for the yellow shirt/wood frame, I have cropped out the wood frame for you and updated it at My Sites > Customize > Site Logo . How does that look?

Below the Image, the “pages” line: HOME ABOUT CONTACT BLOG.

This is still the same as before. You just have to scroll down a tiny bit to see it.

Next below that – in the upper left of the space the Square “Blue Shirt” pic. From there down, all the Text that I had last re-written there, working in edit, and that I “Updated” there. (Is that how to “save”?)

I added your blue shirt to the text body of the Home page by going to My Sites > Pages > Add Media. How does that look?

  • Now, on to the About page:

    (2) ABOUT page – Image: Just the “Yellow FLOWERS,” either full width or on white background. No Picture or Text in the Image.

You only want the yellow flowers up top across this page? To clarify, you would like me to remove the site logo from this page? That is the picture of you in the yellow shirt. And also remove the text that reads, “Our Place In The Cosmos –
    ACKNOWLEDGING AND ACCEPTING REALITY” ?

To remove those 2 items I’d need to edit the CSS of your site. CSS is part of the custom design upgrade included with WordPress.com Premium. Right now, you have WordPress.com Personal. I am not trying to upsell you, as I do not believe those edits are worthy of the price jump. If you felt that you would utilize some other features of the Premium package it may be worth it, and I’ll leave that decision to you. The features are listed at wordpress.com/pricing/

(That yellow “daisys” image I had found in the very beginning, and are on a page of Image choices that I got to in “Customize >edit) Below that Image, in the upper left of the space, the “Blue Shirt” pic.

Again, I added the blue shirt image in to the text body of your About page at My Sites > Pages > About. Does this look alright?

  • The Contact Form / Page

    (3) CONTACT page. Somewhere I did fill in a “form” of that page. Repeat: Allan Avery – (redacted). Any other??

I removed your personal details. It’s best not to post those here because it is a public forum. Lots of folks can see what we are writing.

You are seeing your account details pre populated in the forum because you are signed in to your WordPress.com user account as you are looking at it. When I look at the form I see my own personal details, not yours, and the same is true for all of the other users, they will only see THEIR details not yours.

  • Last, but most importantly, the Blog page:

    (4) BLOG page. Same “Yellow flowers” Alone. As ABOUT & CONTACT pages.

Just reiterating that without the Premium upgrade which includes Custom Design we aren’t able to edit the CSS of the site which is what would be needed to remove the Site Logo (yellow shirt image) and wording, “Our Place In The Cosmos
ACKNOWLEDGING AND ACCEPTING REALITY” from these additional pages.

Right below, upper left, the same “blue Shirt” pic.

The Blog page works a bit differently. This is where your new posts are going to be displayed, and because of that, we can’t add any other text / images to it. This is just the home for your blog posts.

The yellow shirt image that you see here is the featured image to your post. As you add new posts, and give them each a new and unique featured image, it will be displayed in the same style as your yellow shirt image is being displayed.

To better demonstrate this I have added a few sample posts back to your site that you’ll see at the Blog page.

Right below that, the “Enter your Comment Here” space. Can I add some Very short Text below that? Is there Anything else that must be there?

When folks are on the Blog page they can leave a comment 2 different ways. The first is to click the little word cloud icon from the gray bar near the post. The second way is to open up the post by clicking on the title.

Once you have the full post opened up you can scroll down a little bit to see the Leave a Reply comment box.

Liz, Your patience amazes me! Here let me describe WHAT I SEE, when I first open to our-place-in-the-cosmos . (It’s the same whichever WAY I open it, either log in to WordPress.com first, or use the here-in-the-cosmos link that I saved in my pc “favorites.”)

HERE Goes: HOME – I SEE the Original dark city Image with my yellow shirt pic in the top area. Below that, a BIG dark rust color plain band across the screen, with your “put it here” “or put it here” insets. Then far down below that, the pages HOME ABOUT CONTACT BLOG in line. And below that all my text, (as I want it.) Then on below that lots more “stuff.” WHAT I want: The Image Heading and background as it originally (last) was, without the “sample” words and the changed color.
and nothing after HERE GO ON TO ABOUT PAGE at the bottom of the text. Unless there’s something else “standard.” Want to shorten the “vertical” dimension where possible. BTW, What IS “the WordPress Logo?” No doubt it It should be there somewhere I. Next- ABOUT – WHAT I SEE: When I click ABOUT, (on THIS different, altered Open page), the Image and heading are Completely different. Half Yellow Flowers, Half Red Background. SAME thing on CONTACT and BLOG, too. ??? WHAT I Want (if it’s possible on my “plan:”) IMAGE Just Yellow Flowers, all three pages, with NO yellow shirt pic. (“Flowers” either a strip screen-side to side, or just a narrower strip on white background. ALSO, all three pages, The square Blue shirt picture upper left below the Image. And on ABOUT, keep the text as I wrote it; & only “standard” things below it. The rest on CONTACT AND BLOG: just whatever is standard. Or maybe on BLOG, when we get that far, something more too. If the “Yellow flowers” can’t be done, then what other Images could I find? THANKS as always, Allan

Liz, OOops, I hadn’t seen your several separate replies before I sent you my looong one today. I’ll go back and see what I can do myself in “customizer” before you reply again. Allan

  • Unknown's avatar

Liz, Nope, no luck; back to you. I apparently don’t know how to get back into “customize” mode, to try & make changes my self. So if you can Follow my looong one, Please do what you can. I did see that one of the Pages (which on I’ve already forgotten) Does have the Yellow Daisys image.

    Allan

  • Good morning Allan –

I hope you enjoyed the weekend :)

    Here’s what I can help with…

The coral / rust colored banner on the About, Contact, Blog pages is part of your theme. We aren’t able to remove it on your plan, but we can change the color by choosing a different color palette.

To do this, go to Customizer by clicking on My Sites > Customize (next to themes) > Colors and Backgrounds > Choose a Palette. Now, you will see 6 different options and when you click on them you will see a preview off to the right on your screen to get an idea of how it looks. Just clicking them does not activate them to your site. To save one of these palettes you need to click on Save and Publish, the blue button in the upper left corner of the screen.

The yellow shirt image that you see on every page in the header is your site logo. This is an all or nothing feature with your theme. We can enable it on all of your pages or none at all. There is not a way (again, with your current plan) for me to only put the yellow shirt image on the Home page.

The same rule applies to the text in your header.

I removed the additional text lines, it seems like you weren’t interested in using those. If I am wrong, you can certainly go back and add some brief messages. To do that you need to get back to your customizer. Go to My Sites > Customize > Site Identity.

When you sign in to your account it should look like this on the left when you click My Sites (click this link https://cloudup.com/cmxDf7cIoNk) Notice the options you see. Posts and Pages, to edit the text on About, Home, Contact, click on pages option. To add a new post click on Blog Posts – remember these publish on the Blog page. Look a bit further down, next to themes there is a customize button – this is your customizer. When you click on that button a new list of options will open on the left hand of the screen. Take a look at this pic https://cloudup.com/cBtR0KVeG84 to see those options.

Do you want to make any changes with the blue shirt image that is now in the upper left corner of the About, Contact, and Blog pages?

Here is what you should see when you load the site

    1. The site opens on your Home page with the city + mountain header image, your site logo (yellow shirt) and the header text. Scroll down to see your blue shirt image and page of text. I’ve removed the video option for you, so it simply ends with your text as you desired.

    2. Click on About from the site menu. You’ll see the yellow flower header image as requested. The yellow shirt image is your site logo and I can’t remove that or the text with your current plan. The blue bar was changed from that coral rust color. What do you think about that color? I noted the instructions above to change the site color palette if you want to test out some other options.

    3. Click on Contact from the site menu. Here you’ll see the same header, identical to the About page. When you scroll down you’ll see the new text you added to this page. Before we had an actual form in place for folks to submit an email message to you. That was removed, let me know if you want the form back. It’s a bit easier for folks to figure out how to message you when there’s an actual form in place. We can add the new text to the form if you like. The blue shirt image is also here in upper left.

    4. Click on Blog from the site menu. The header is identical to the About and Contact pages. When you scroll down you aren’t going to see any of your blog posts listed because you deleted them. This is where I had previously added those sample posts to give you a better idea of how the page will look as you keep adding new posts. It looks like you’ve permanently deleted those now.

I think the next step is for you to start adding some content and get some posts up. After all, this is how folks are going to find you. Let me know if you need any help adding the posts.

LIZ, Maybe We’re There! (When I Open as follows: https://our-place-in-the-cosmos.com/ HOME page is back with the Image as I want it. The dark city background and yellow shirt pic, and the rust color strip gone. The Text below all correct. (Although I’ll be revising on both Home and About from time to time. ABOUT, CONTACT, and BLOG Each come up with the SAME different top Image: Yellow Flowers a Strip across, with the Yellow shirt pic in the middle; Below that a dark grayish blue Strip across, with the “Here In The Cosmos” and “Acknowledging and Accepting Reality” both in that. I’m OK with THAT, and the rest that’s on those pages, all as-is. With the small square blue shirt pics in the corner! (I’d prefer the yellow shirt pic be off Yellow flowers strip on those pages, but understand it has to stay in this plan.) Are These four now the Official Published “SET” of pages? Has it all been published this way? With them, is there now anything else I need to do except start Posting?? If this is GO, THANK YOU !!squared. Allan

  • Unknown's avatar

And immediately forgot- again: Is https://our-place-in-the-cosmos.com/ the way I and visitors will open to it? Allan

  • Hi Allan –

You can let folks know that they can see your site by entering our-place-in-the-cosmos.com in to their web browsers. That’s it. The site is active online and it is ready to go :) You did it!

Are These four now the Official Published “SET” of pages?

Yes. The 4 pages of your site are Home, About, Contact and Blog. The Home page is your front page, so that always loads first when someone goes to our-place-in-the-cosmos.com. The Blog page is where your posts are going to be published.

Remember, you can see your pages and edit them by clicking on My Sites < Pages and then save your updates with the blue button in the upper left corner.

Now, to add some new posts, you’ll click on My Sites > Blog Posts > Add and then save your work in the same way, with the blue button.

If you run in to any trouble or have questions just come back here and say Hi. This thread is always going to come to my inbox and if by chance I’m off on vacation one of my coworkers will jump in to help.

Liz, Only with you I did it. My Forever THANKS. So now, where do I go to Tell WordPress how good my “Happiness Engineer” was?
    Allan

  • Good Morning Allan –

It was my pleasure to help, and continue helping you on this journey!

Did you receive the email I sent yesterday? It was delivered to the email address listed on your account at wordpress.com/me/account/

  • Unknown's avatar

LIZ, OMG!! I just DISAPPEARED MY ENTIRE HOME PAGE TEXT. While again re-writing parts of it. Hit a wrong key and everything disappeared except for the last letter I had entered. n Then the BIG MISTAKE. I saved that. :-((((((! I need to be put out to Pasture,

    CAN YOU RESTORE IT??

    Allan

  • Good Morning Allan –

No problem. I’ve restored the Home page to a previous version.

  • Unknown's avatar

Liz, Hi! (Allan) “Hey, Long Time No Ask for Help!” :-) Although haven’t had any reason to Watch me lately, you’d see that I’m still re-writing and re, re, re and Re- writing the personal text on the HOME and ABOUT Pages. Not a Problem, I’m just still toying with different approaches, (including “HARD” Opinions, or “SOFTER.” Having fun at it. May go on for a while yet. But when I decide “that’s It,” I’ll be POSTING. Meanwhile, few Questions. (1) I can open up ” here-in-the-cosmos ” different Ways. The first is, as you advised, by Log-in to WordPress.com, and go from there to the “latest” Version of It all. OR, I get to the same place with: ” (WP Logo) here-in-the-cosmos.com ” which I also have saved in my PC “favorites. Either way, the same “latest version” of all 4 pages. And Both have the Edit, in Red, at bottom. That’s good for me, to go on being able to Edit, But I Don’t want my Site’s Visitors to have that Edit button. So could you please show me again the exact “title” a Visitor needs to enter into their Browser, to open my Blog, to Read and Comment only, without an Edit? (2) I’m not clear Exactly how to SAVE after I edited something. To make Text Changes, (or any other changes presumably) when I open the Site, I get to a Green border screen that allows the typing changes. When I’m done, Green screen has an UPDATE Button. Click that, it says “Saving.” When it finishes, it changes back to Update. What else must I then do to be sure it is saved? On that screen there’s also a “See Page” button, top Right, Click that and I get the “edited,” and Saved Version full screen, with no Back or other button besides X – Close. If I Close, back to PC desktop, and then Reopen (either way, MS IE Browser, or WordPress Login from my Browser “Favorites,”) Oh, and (3). Could you look at the text I put on the BLOG page to see if what I wrote in is Accurate.
SO THEN, I Did Get the T Shirts. THANK Y”ALL! I love ’em and I’ll wear them. (Wash ’em in HOT water, to shrink ’em down to my “withered” skinny size.) You’re the BEST!
