Allan Avery – new WordPress Blog

Hi Allan,
Glad to hear you’ve been having fun with your site!
So could you please show me again the exact “title” a Visitor needs to enter into their Browser, to open my Blog, to Read and Comment only, without an Edit?
Sure! Visitors can go directly to your blog using this link:
https://our-place-in-the-cosmos.com/blog/
They can then click on the name of the post or the link icon at the bottom, to see the full post:
https://cloudup.com/cQLtZ7BoZ5J
But I Don’t want my Site’s Visitors to have that Edit button.
No that’s fine, they won’t see it. You’re seeing the edit button because you are logged into the site. A visitor who is not logged in will only see comment and link icons:
https://cloudup.com/cjpzOEQPQQd
When it finishes, it changes back to Update. What else must I then do to be sure it is saved?
As you write and edit your posts and pages, the changes you make are automatically saved every few seconds. These changes will not be displayed on your blog until you click the Update button.
If you are writing a draft and want to be double sure it has been saved, you click the ‘save’ link which appears just above the Publish button.
Could you look at the text I put on the BLOG page to see if what I wrote in is Accurate.
Did you want us to take a look at the main Blog page, or one of your posts? Just let me know.
So glad the t-shirts arrived and you like them :) Liz picked them out for you!

Gemma, (I’m guessing. :-) Thank You! I like the way you “Itemize” my Questions, each separately in a “box” followed by the response, like LIZ did. Works well with my 80 yo brain. BTW, has Liz Divorced me? She was way past reasonable Retirement, with me the slowest client ever. :-)) I wish I could “underline” each my Questions here, to help “follow” me. OK, (1) Re “getting in to my site.” First, how I get to it. Two different ways- both with urls (and “names”) Saved in my MS
Win10 – IE “Favorites” ONE is the way Liz instructed me: Login to it @ WordPress….. On that route I can get to all pages, individually, the way they’ll look to a Visitor, with red Edit allowing me to rewrite at will. The OTHER way I can get in, with the same red Edits and the side bars, is “named” our-place-in-the-cosmos in Favorites. That’s just quicker for me to get in to Edit. So is it OK for me to on using that entry to Edit? Can I also POST from there, so that visitors can read and comment But not with the Edit? Or is only the WP LogIn entry the only one I can Post on? And that a Visitor doesn’t get an Edit on? OR the only one the Visitor can Read and Comment on? The “entry” url you gave me:
http://our-place-in-the-cosmos.com/blog/ — (I’m saving it to my Favorites) — Is there “shorter” one that an occasional visitor could use if they chose not to Save it for re-use), with all access except edit? No. (2)
Updating/Saving/Recovering. I’m still unsure. When a do an Edit, (so far, just text), I get to a “green” border page, (without the images) When I finish an Edit, there are several Icons at the top border. One is a square box with an “up arrow.” There is UpDate. Another is “See Page” (which I click & look.) Which do I use and in what order to SAVE for sure? You mention a “Save link” just above the “Publish” Button. I don’t see those? Different page? Please walk me through. And, if I do lose something, somehow, are there ways to recover? Last: THANK YOU !!! I hope I don’t need much again. Allan -
Hi Allan –
I was away last week on vacation. Now I’m back :)
This is your site address:
our-place-in-the-cosmos.com
If you were making business cards that’s all you’d put on it. Does that make sense? That’s all that needs to be put in to a web browser to bring up your site.
When you use your internet favorites and go to our-place-in-the-cosmos.com you are still able to make edits because behind the scenes your still signed in to your WordPress.com user account.
The other option is to go directly to WordPress.com and sign in to your account. Then click on My Sites in the upper left corner, and select our-place-in-the-cosmos.com. This will bring up your dashboard tools for customization and editing.
From the dashboard you can customize your theme via the customize button. You can also edit or add new Posts and Pages by clicking on those links.
When you are making a new post it is going to be automatically saved with an auto save feature.
We launched an update to the editor last week and I think this might have contributed to some confusion. You’ll see now that all of the editing tools are now on the right hand side of the screen.

Liz, just an FYI note; if you’ve noticed that I’m still re-writing on the Home and About Pages. May be awhile yet before I’m ready to “go public.” Lots of great different ideas pop into my head day to day. And some new diversions have also just come up. Don’t worry, I’ll eventually “set it free.” Keep the faith in me. :-)

Liz, I finally have the Text I added to the HOME and ABOUT pages the way I want it, so it is almost a GO! But there’s now one thing I don’t know how to do. I want to MOVE some of the text I put on HOME Page over onto the Top of the text I have on the ABOUT page. It is the HOME page text that is below my “Now go to ABOUT Page.” All of that, over to the top of what is already on the ABOUT Page. Can you do that for me?
Also, would you take a look at my CONTACT page. Is what I have there appropriate? Anything else there? Is that what a Visitor sees when they go to CONTACT?
And then (I ask feeling pretty guilty at this late point): Would is still be possible to change the yellow TOP BACKGROUND on About, Contact, and Blog, along with that yellow shirt pic and the same background texts, to the same “Darkish City’ Background TOP that I have in HOME? But also Keep the small blue shirt pic in the top corner as it is now, on those three pages? If so, I’d like to do that for the Final.
So the next thing for me is to write MY First Real Blog Post for the BLOG page. To confirm once more what a Visitor must enter into their browser to get it it? our-place-in-the-cosmos.com That’s all? It the way I get in. When it’s GO and I “Announce to all,” I have a Facebook page where I’ll link it. Let everyone else I know by email or voice. Would you have any other suggestions there? My usual Profound Thanks. You are the Greatest!! Allan -

Hi Allan –
It’s good to hear from you. I hope you’re doing well and that Spring has found you :)
I want to MOVE some of the text I put on HOME Page over onto the Top of the text I have on the ABOUT page.
No problem. Can you tell me which text you want to move from Home to About? If you’re feeling brave I’ll walk you through the steps.
1. highlight the text that you want to move from the Home page.
2. right click > copy
3. go to My Sites > Pages > About > Edit
4. place your cursor where you want to add the new text.
5. right click > paste
6. give yourself a high five! and save the changes. Also, would you take a look at my CONTACT page. Is what I have there appropriate? Anything else there? Is that what a Visitor sees when they go to CONTACT?
It looks like you’ve deleted the contact “form” from the that page. The way it is now, there’s no obvious way for a follower to get in touch. My suggestion is that we add the form back to this page. This will let the follower submit an email to you through the form. Let me know what you think.
Read more about contact forms here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/forms/contact-form/
Would is still be possible to change the yellow TOP BACKGROUND on About, Contact, and Blog
Yes. You can change it at any time and as many times as needed to get it just right.
To make sure I am understanding the request. It sounds like you’d like to remove the yellow flowers from the header image and replace them with the dark city scape on About, Contact, and Blog pages?
To confirm once more what a Visitor must enter into their browser to get it it? our-place-in-the-cosmos.com That’s all?
Yep, that’s it :)
Once you’re ready I can help you connect with Facebook. You can set it up so that whenever you post a new blog post on our-place-in-the-cosmos.com it will automatically publish to Facebook. You may want to start reading about the different options for this here in our Facebook integration guide: https://en.support.wordpress.com/facebook-integration/

Liz, Thank you, and I’m Hopeless :-( My Bravery turned into the opposite.
Starting From the Top of your reply:
I opened using our-place-in-the-cosmos. at HOME page, scrolled down to Edit, and back to the top. Couldn’t find, in any of the symbols at the top a “copy” Then scrolled down to the first part I want to move and highlighted it. But no way to move. Where do I find the “copy”? What I want to move is everything under where “ABOUT page” is now on my home page. All of that on Top of what I had already put in ABOUT.
The CONTACT Page: How do I ADD FROM back in. Tried the other contact-form url too; again couldn’t figure out from there. AND, should I delete what I had added on there?
The TOP HEADINGS on all the pages: Yes, what I’d like is for the “background” on all four the same, the “darkish city scape” That instead of the Yellow Flowers background on About, Contact , and Blog. With Yellow shirt picture in it only on Home. In it on the other three pages, just two short lines of text without the Picture of me. BUT With the small Blue Shirt pic in the upper left corner as it is now on just those three pages.
AND: our-place-in-the-cosmos.com Got It! Thanks!! I will try over once again using the “Login to WordPress….” way instead. Maybe that’s the problem. I’ll let you know. -
Liz, 5 minutes later. Nope opening to it that way, still couldn’t same things out. Many old fools like myself out there may find these things more “intuitive” than I. But maybe I really am hopeless.
Could you go head this time and do them for me? I REALLY hope I can do more on my own when Get it OUT there. On My Knees?

Good Morning Allan –
No worries. I can help you.
In your next reply please tell me exactly what text I need to remove from the Home Page and add to the top of the About Page.
I’ll add in the contact form and change the images out all at once.
This little tutorial may help you figure out the copy + paste bit.
-
Liz, Thank You! The text that I want to remove from HOME, and move to the Top of ABOUT, is everything BELOW the “break” to ABOUT, where it reads “So if you’re willing, go now to ABOUT Page. Everything below that, which begins with “So how do we fix it? Where do we start? All of that, down to the bottom of what’s now on HOME. Put all that Above what’s on About now.
And I WILL read the Tutorial. I may need it again. :-) Allan

Liz, back again after the tutorial and trying something. (Cut and paste is simple for me on my MS W10 and Office 2007 & other aps.) But how here on My Site pages? When I go to “Edit” a Page, the screen it takes me to, with the text, has a double row of symbols at the top. Hovering the cursor over each of them, One (the T inside a box) says “Paste.” But No “cut.” Am I missing it? And does it work moving text between pages? I Tried (on HOME) highlighting some text at the bottom there, then switched to ABOUT page. Set the cursor at the top there and clicked Enter. Nothing. This must be simple for a normal person. Me? Help. You’re My Hero Forever. Allan

Hi Allan –
You can copy + paste any text. Try it here in this thread, copy a portion of my reply and then paste it in to your response box.
You’ll need to first highlight the text that you want to copy, then right click > copy. Now move your mouse back in to your response box (where you type) and right click > paste.
The new About Page: https://our-place-in-the-cosmos.com/about/
The new Home Page: https://our-place-in-the-cosmos.com/
The new Contact Page: https://our-place-in-the-cosmos.com/contact/How do those look?
-
Liz, This is how dull I am: Seeing no link for “copy” or “paste” above the top of this dialogue box, for the first time I thought of maybe using the “page” link in the tool bar at the top my browser page. Lo and behold! It works! If it likewise works to move Between Pages, then I can do the text move from Home to About by myself. But,
can you still do the Top Heading changes for me? That is, put the same “darkish city” background, with the “Our Place In The Cosmos” and “Acknowledging and Accepting Reality” that’s on HOME page, the Same on the other three pages. But NO picture in that Background, (just “Our-Place-In-The……… etc. on those three pages) ; just the “blue shirt” pic in the top left corner below the Background, as it is, on those three. My Usual THANKS Squared for your help. Allan -
of this dialogue box, for the first time I thought of maybe using the “page” link in the tool
The copy and paste menu will appear when you click on the right side of your mouse and is not part of the toolbar for this forum software. When you Right Click with your mouse you should see a little menu like this.
This YouTube video is a bit old but I think the instructions are solid.
I am confused about where you want to see the city scape? Do you want to replace all of the yellow flower header images as the same city scape from the home page?
-
-
Liz, Bless you Again and Again! Re the “darkish city scape:” I want IT, as it is now on HOME, the Same on each of the other Three pages, About, Contact and Blog. INSTEAD of the yellow flowers background there now. ALSO, EXCEPT, on HOME, the “BLUE shirt” picture of me inside the cityscape, along with the two text lines, INSTEAD of the yellow shirt.” And, on ABOUT, CONTACT and BLOG, NO picture of me inside the cityscape frame; only the two pieces: “Our Place In The Cosmos,” and “Acknowledging and Accepting Reality” inside the cityscape on those pages. With the “blue shirt” picture UNDER the cityscape heading, in the upper left corner, as it is there now on those pages. Can you let me know when you’ve done that so I can see? ALSO, FYI. (And I DON’T want you to think that ANY of your looong time helping me thus far has been wasted): I AM going to be going on, doing Major re-write, of the Text I’ve put onto HOME and ABOUT. (Just those two pages, plus a “First Real” Post on BLOG. When I’m ready to “go public” & tell my friends & potential followers.) I’ll be making some big changes in “my “approach” to the whole venture. (I’m just now barely beginning.) But with what I’ve gained from You I can do it. Assuming I can do cut/copy/paste I’ll be Good, while I continue that . You have been a true “GodSend” for me, and ultimately my BLOG will be way Better on account of your help. I’ll write you back when I’m ready. :-) Now to try your last “cut/copy/paste advice. Allan

Howdy Allan –
I’ve removed the site logo. This is an all or nothing change. We aren’t able to apply it to certain pages and not others. This is the picture of you in the top of the site over the header image. We can add it to all pages or none – Let me know how you’d like that to appear.
The city scape with mountains has also been added as your header image on all pages. You’ll see that when you click through your site menu.
-
Liz, I’m back at it and about ready to post my first real Blog Post. I see your directions. Thank you from the Heart as always! Thus What I’d like is for the “blue shirt” photo, along with the ” Here In The Cosmos ” and ” Acknowledging And Accepting Reality ” be in the “dark city” background on all four pages. And remove it from the upper left of all but HOME page.
Also Q’s to be sure I understand. When “visitors” open to the site they’ll always see the screen with all four pages under the Header? If they are “Repeaters:” (1) and they want to Comment on a specific one of MY originals, will they see How to Comment on the Blog page? Will they be able to see my Various “original” Posts to pick out which they want to add a comment to? Will they always have to find a Post of mine to Comment on? Could you summarize how that works please? And (2) Is there a way for either “new” or “repeat” visitor to do a completely Original Post themselves? Is that What the CONTACT Page was intended for? That’s what I assumed, and put in the short bit of text for. ??
I’ve said this before, but again: I can’t find a new way to say how grateful I am for your help. I truly want to make it ultimately Worth all the time you’ve spent. Allan
