Allan Avery – new WordPress Blog
-
Liz, I forgot to mention: I’ll be away from May 1 to 19, so you’re probably at least guaranteed I won’t be asking again till then or later. :-) (You probably see me going on for a looooong time further revising the text I have on HOME and ABOUT. Allan (What’s the Icon for “Heart?”)

Hi Allan –
Let me know if you have any more questions about my replies here.
When “visitors” open to the site they’ll always see the screen with all four pages under the Header?
Yes. They will land on the front page of the blog and see your menu. From there they can click on the menu to get to your Blog page.
(1) and they want to Comment on a specific one of MY originals, will they see How to Comment on the Blog page? Will they be able to see my Various “original” Posts to pick out which they want to add a comment to? Will they always have to find a Post of mine to Comment on? Could you summarize how that works please?
Once you have your first post published this will be more obvious. Since the comments are enabled already, the visitor is going to see a box to in which they can choose to leave a comment.
(2) Is there a way for either “new” or “repeat” visitor to do a completely Original Post themselves? Is that What the CONTACT Page was intended for? That’s what I assumed, and put in the short bit of text for. ??
You can have folks added to your site as an editor which would allow them to post their own original pieces to your blog. Or, you could have them submit the pieces via the contact form to you. Those submissions will come to your email address, you can copy + paste them in to your WordPress.com Posts giving the author credit.
Safe travels :)

LIZ, Thanks for ALL your answers and guidance over the months. Right now I am again reconsidering what I’m trying to accomplish here having discussions with other folks; and almost certainly will be revising the language currently I’ve put in in HOME and ABOUT. But all your effort with m4e has not been wasted!! It will pay off in the end. (I just wanting my Blog to end up producing some real new understanding and effective activism. After medical priorities the last month or so, It may be a while yet, but I’ll be back on it! Bless you! Allan Avery

Liz,
Finally, I’m about ready to “show” this, with my first Actual POST (on the BLOG page. (Haven’t decided the specific ways to announce it yet, but probably Facebook and a group email to individual friends and contacts.)But a few Questions first: (1) When I open the my latest “updated” version, (using our-place-in-the-cosmos.com which is the way I saved it in my MS Explorer Favorites folder) what it brings up is all “Center margined.” Then when I “edit” that, The edit screen of each page is all Left Margin. Then when I “update” changes, “see page” goes back to Center margin. If I wanted to have all of what visitors see when they open it to be Left margin, how to do that? (2) when “open” – with the
our-place-in-the-cosmos – the 2 lines of text in the Heading on HOME page don’t show. Just the “dark city” background. When I write a first post, on BLOG page, will that text be back in the HOME page Heading? And the yellow headings on the other pages, plus the photos on all of the pages too? I could/should of checked more on each page myself before asking you, so I’m closing here to go back look more. I may be back again after what I find. Bless You for your help as always. -
LIZ, And the other main question I should have included above.
When I make edit changes on the pages, I’m not certain how to be sure that they are SAVED, so that the latest will be in what next opens up. All I’ve found to do so far is the UPDATE link. When I Update, is there a certain way then to Close Down? Is there something more I need to do at those steps? I ask because when I “save” changes that way I often get a “Are you sure you want to leave this page? You have unsaved changes? Allan (There needs to be a “Heart” emoticon.)
-
OK, My Bad. The headings’ Text and colors all do show correctly. So just the other questions: Margins, and Saving.
Allan -
Howdy Allan –
When you’re editing text on pages or posts the work will be updated every few seconds with our auto save feature. The work can be saved manually via the blue update button.
This is the guide that explains the items in the post/page toolbar: https://en.support.wordpress.com/visual-editor/
I’ve left aligned all the text on your pages that are listed in the site menu. How does that look?
-
LIZ, I’ve been laid low with physical health things the past two months; but back again. More changes to the HOME and ABOUT text, and now ready to actually do Posts. Questions (1) The “left alignment” you did is good. On the ABOUT page though the text looks like it extends across only half the page. Could it be extended over whole page? And when changing the HOME & ABOUT text I lost the pictures. (Or maybe they’re still there in the “saved” version?) Or can they be restored? (2) NEW POSTS on the BLOG PAGE. I’m now confused how I DO that. Do I write them on the BLOG page? Am I supposed to see a “format” there to write it in? (I did apparently successfully do two short posts a month ago. but correctly??) When a visitor logs into ” our-place-in-the-cosmos ” Do they first see the HOME page? Then they go to BLOG to see new posts? I think I’m ready to “take off” down the runway. :-) My biggest THANKS! Allan

Howdy Allan –
Glad to hear you are back at it :)
There is a side bar enabled on the about page, off to the right. This is why the page appears to be left shifted. The text is covering the entire page. You can remove the Follow Blog Widget that appears on the About page if you like.
The images can be added back to these pages from your Media library. To do this, you will click on My Sites > Pages > About > Edit
Click your mouse cursor where you want the image to be inserted at.
From the tool bar on the page editor you’ll be looking for the + sign, click on it, then select Add Media.
Here are the step-by-step instructions: https://en.support.wordpress.com/add-media/
Once the picture is back in place you’ll just need to click on the blue update button at the top of the menu.
Repeat this for the Home page.
Regarding posts:
All of your posts are going to appear on your Blog page. We have configured this previously in your settings. When a visitor comes to your site they will land on your Home page. They will click the Blog link in your menu to get to the Blog page – this is where all of your posts are going to be.
To write the posts you will click on My Sites > Posts > Add New — save it as a draft if you want to keep working on it, or publish the finished product! That’s it :)
There is not a right or wrong way to blog or to write the posts. This is yours, it belongs to you, it is an individual and unique. Remember that!
-
I wanted to point out to you that both of your previous blog posts are active on the Blog page at https://our-place-in-the-cosmos.com/blog/.

Liz, Elderly Allan once more. On bended knee. I will try to follow those instructions. But I’m afraid I’ve been doing “the first thing” Wrong, from the beginning. I’ve been getting up Onto it wrong. By entering simply our-place-in-the-cosmos in my browser. I saved that in my browser “Favorites folder;” So I just “reopen” from that saved link; all this time. (Forgetting, and contrary to, your past instructions for logging in myself.) What I get is the current saved version, with an EDIT button at the bottom. And all the changes I’ve been making have been onto that version. (And I’ve been unsure how to SAVE positively, too.) But if someone else opens it with that same, our-place-in-the-cosmos then They could edit it TOO?? Could you walk me once more through the right steps, please?
(1) How should I be getting to it? What do I enter into my browser to open it properly for Myself? (So only I can edit it.) Other “steps” from there? (2) And what does a Visitor enter (into their browser?) to get to the HOME page, to Read and Comment? (3) And my New Posts? those two little “test” ones I did on the BLOG page. Don’t remember exactly how I did them, (w/o leaving this page), but how do I do a Post? Will a Visitor see how to post a Comment? There? (4) And if I want follow up on a visitor’s Comment, how? A New Post, to start a “String?” But if instead I just want to leave My comment on a single long string of all Posts and Comment? Either or Both? don’t understand how that’s supposed to work. Could you explain? Liz, I will get this yet. With your unfathomably patient help. (My physical health problems have been messing with my mind, and I Stop that.) Allan A. -

This is fine. You are signed in on the background of the browser. This is what allows you to see that ‘edit’ option.
But if someone else opens it with that same, our-place-in-the-cosmos then They could edit it TOO?? Could you walk me once more through the right steps, please?
No. Only you can edit it this way. It’s because you’re still logged in to the account in the background of your web browser.
You can edit your site by going to it directly as you have been. OR you can sign in at https://wordpress.com/ then click on My Sites in the upper left corner and edit it from the dashboard there. It’s the same result, just 2 different ways to get there.
To add a new post you will get signed in to your account through https://wordpress.com and then click on My Sites in the upper left corner. The dashboard is going to load down the left side, find Posts and click on it. Select the Add button from the left of the New Post option in the upper right corner. If it is easier, you can save this direct link as a bookmark: https://wordpress.com/posts/our-place-in-the-cosmos.com
Yes, your visitors will be able to leave comments on these posts. This is a setting that you have configured correctly to allow comments. When a comment is left you’ll receive a notification. When viewing a visitor comment you’ll see that there’s a “reply” option. This is how you follow up with them, it will string your comments and nest them together. Does that help?
Take a look through and bookmark these guides as well.

Liz, Thank You! Two remaining questions, just to be sure: (1) To do a new Post: Using either of the two links you list, they both take me to a Blank Page with just the word TITLE at the top. Is that correct? Do I just write there, and click- ? Publish? ( I have a couple of short new posts ready.) (2) What is the shortest link that a Visitor can put in their browser, to get directly to my blog HOME page with the whole heading? I mean exactly what they would enter in their browser. ?
Also, I stuck again trying to restore the picture (yellow shirt) in the upper left corner of the text on HOME, and the blue shirt on the other three. I’ve tried; no success. Can you do that for me?
My usual gratitude to you! Allan

Liz- should have included above, re adding the pictures. I did try to follow the links you advised, but couldn’t figure out how to get them located into the corners. Allan

Good morning –
(1) To do a new Post: Using either of the two links you list, they both take me to a Blank Page with just the word TITLE at the top. Is that correct? Do I just write there, and click- ? Publish? ( I have a couple of short new posts ready.)
Yes, that is all you need to do. Type in your title, then type the body of your post in the larger box beneath the title. When finished click Publish. Once you click Publish the post is going to be published on your Blog page.
(2) What is the shortest link that a Visitor can put in their browser, to get directly to my blog HOME page with the whole heading? I mean exactly what they would enter in their browser. ?
our-place-in-the-cosmos.com You can tell them that they can add it as a bookmark to their browser too.
re adding the pictures. I did try to follow the links you advised, but couldn’t figure out how to get them located into the corners.
Allan, I have added your blue shirt photo to the About page on our-place-in-the-cosmos. Can you take a look at that and see what you think.
-
Liz, Muchas Gracias Again!
I wonder: Could the “blue shirt” be indented in the corner of the text? So it doesn’t add to the length of the page?
And, can the “yellow shirt” pic be restored to the Image on the HOME page? You may have advised me previously that it can’t be restored. If it can, please. If it can’t, could you add the “blue shirt” Indented in the upper left corner of the text on HOME page, same as ABOUTLastly, the two short lines of text in the HOME image I see are now in White. Could you change them to a bright BLUE?
I’m long past where I should be doing all this myself, but I am clearly WordPress’s most difficult case ever. I have never figured out how to PRINT OUT these pages in This back and forth screen. So, while I writing questions to you, I have to “LEAVE THIS PAGE” to go back and re-read prior answers. And then start over again here. How can I print these personal instruction pages? I really HAVE to stop taking your time. And I think We’re Close. Allan
-
Good morning Allan –
I have made that changes to your Home and About pages.
The white text you’re mentioning can only be changed with a further upgrade to the Premium plan option as it requires CSS customization work.
The easiest option for printing would be to print out screen shots of your screen. Here’s how you do it: https://en.support.wordpress.com/make-a-screenshot/
-
The screen shot option would give you 2 versions. The one that you save on your computer and then the page that you physically print out. So you’d have the information in two places.
