Allan Avery – new WordPress Blog

  • Unknown's avatar

Liz, again , weeks of preoccupation with other stuff. Made a few more text changes on ABOUT, and only NOW, really, ready to do Posts. (The two “beginners” are still there.) But now don’t remember HOW. Go to BLOG page? Then what/where/how? (I have the topic ready for this first real one.
And BTW can you still add the “blue shirt pic” to the corner of the Text on HOME?

PLUS ANOTHER “THING” – I have reluctantly agreed to be responsible for re-activating and maintaining our long-idle Homeowner Association’s Website. (I was the last resort, after we pleaded with the membership to find someone else with experience, to do it) It’s on GoDaddy; the domain is creeksideinsunmer.com Godaddy’s “Help” is completely useless. We have sent them a letter formally requesting repayment of what was paid forward on the account. Refund or not, we want to set one up new one with Y’all- WordPress- instead. Would you be willing to help me with it? Much like you see in the existing one, but probably more. (The “Mountain” picture we’d like to retain; it is Mount Rainier, which we all see from here.) I think I do it with less help than the Blog. Maybe Yes?
    :-) Allan

LIZ, Decided to be a bit more “self sufficient” & went back to some of you prior answers,. (What a concept! :-) So now I can get to New Post.) But: any way I go to the Blog Title Page, it comes up with a black box in the middle: (“Did you know…… payment button”) And I can’t get it to go away. How? Do I have to “accept” it, before I write?

Another thing: I have SIX different links to this in my BLOG “Favorites” folder. Some must be redundant. Besides this link to you, I have: our-place-in-the-cosmos.com — WordPress.com<Log In — WP Blog Login — Edit Page<Our-Place-In-The-Cosmos… —
Do I need anything but our-place-in-the-cosmos.com , & maybe WP Blog Login? Or any others?
With that I think I good for now.

AND. When we- our Homeowners Association- are ready to start over with a WordPress website, I’ll no doubt be BACK. :-) Allan

LIZ, —– :-( I’m sorry. Been trying to do some things with the format. I successfully changed the Font, on HOME and ABOUT pages. Then I ALMOST lost the whole thing, but it seems to be back.
But I’m Stuck on BLOG page. I would like the same new font there, And I’m Again confused what to put on the Page. Instructions for me? I would like it just to show my most recent Post. Have a link on it to go to a chronologic list of all prior Posts, just by Title, but with a link to each to read?? What “other ” text should be on BLOG page, besides “you are following this Blog,” etc?
Plus, how to add the blue shirt pic in the upper corner of HOME, ABOUT & BLOG?
I’m going to be away until next Friday. Bless you,
    Allan

Staff are currently at a meetup and Liz will get back to you as soon as she can. Please be patient while waiting.

  • Hi Allan –

My apologies that I am running a little behind schedule with the meetup in progress. Thank you timethief for relaying that information, much appreciated :)

And BTW can you still add the “blue shirt pic” to the corner of the Text on HOME?

I’ve added the blue shirt picture to the text on Home page. How does that look? The blue shirt picture is already in place on the About page. The Blog page is the place holder for your posts, so we can’t add any content there manually.

Yes, I can help you set up creeksideinsunmer.com on WordPress.com. How this works is that the domain will remain registered through them but you’ll map it to our service. These are the steps to make that happen: https://en.support.wordpress.com/map-existing-domain/ Give that a read and let me know what questions you have. Are you planning to map it to your own personal account or create a separate one for this purpose and keep them separated?

You do not have to pay anything to create a post on our-place-in-the-cosmos.com. Can you tell me where you’re seeing that at?

To make a post you sign in to your allanmerry WordPress.com account and click on My Sites > Posts > Add New. When the post is finished click on the Publish button. You can reference this guide: https://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/

If you want to make a bookmark for creating a new post it would be at https://wordpress.com/post/

But I’m Stuck on BLOG page. I would like the same new font there, And I’m Again confused what to put on the Page. Instructions for me?

The Blog page is where your posts are published. You do not need to add anything there. Every time to you add publish a new post it will be housed on the Blog page. All of your posts make up this page. Don’t add anything manually.

I hope you’re doing well, get back to me with any follow ups :)

Liz, :-) At least not every day now. I have my first “Real” Post ready to Post. (Actually it would be post # 4.) I can get to screen on which to write the Post. However, What I did was write out what I want to post first as a Word Doc, which is now saved in my pc document file. I hoped to be able to simply upload on the new Blog screen. How do I do that?
Or do I have to type that text directly onto the Blog page?

    Everlasting Thanks!! Allan

    Liz,
Intentionally separate message. As mentioned before, I am now our Homeowners Association’s “last resort” volunteer to try to reactivate and operate our long idle Website. (Good Grief!) It was a GoDaddy site, and it’s still “up” online: “Creekside in Sumner Homeowner Association.” I had zero luck with godaddy’s “help” trying to learn how to return it to active operation. So I want to set up a new one with WordPress instead. (You can see the format it I currently in.) I assume I’d start from scratch at WordPress.com, and when I’m Stuck, with You. This just FYI for now. (Heart Icon) Allan

  • Hi Allan –

You can copy + paste the text from your Word document and in to your post editor.

What is the URL of the domain for your HOA? If you aren’t able to map it to WordPress.com, then you can start fresh with a new domain. To do that you’ll click on My Sites > Domains > Add and register a new domain.

  • Unknown's avatar

Liz, Can’t figure out the copy & paste. I copy the Word doc, but how to paste into the Post? On the “new post” screen, I can’t find a way to Paste the doc.

And another Q: Can my Posts, after they’re published, be removed from Blog Page? If so- the steps? (I’d like to remove one or all of my feeble earlier ones. :-)

Oh, and the url for the Homeowner Site is http://creeksideinsumner.com

    Bless you!
    Allan

  • Hi Allan –

I copy the Word doc, but how to paste into the Post? On the “new post” screen, I can’t find a way to Paste the doc.

On your mouse, if you right click, you should see a paste option in the menu. Another way is to use the keyboard short codes cmd+v or ctrl+v at the same time.

Can my Posts, after they’re published, be removed from Blog Page? If so- the steps? (I’d like to remove one or all of my feeble earlier ones. :-)

Yes, you could do this by reverting the post to a draft state instead of actively being published.

    Liz,
Re the website of my Homeowners Association, the url is: http://www.creeksideinsumner.com/

You suggested first trying to “map it” to WordPress. How to do that?

What we’d like is to keep essentially the same format it’s in now, but listing several more and different choices of “subjects” on the First Page, as links to go from there for various information. Even keep the Same Mountain picture. :-) (Known up here just as “the Mountain,” Mt. Rainier.) Had perfect view of it from our 2nd Floor, until hey built a taller one across the street :-( Allan

  • Good morning –

    Hi Allan :)

Let’s take this one piece at a time.

You suggested first trying to “map it” to WordPress. How to do that?

Follow this step-by-step guide to map the domain over WordPress.com: https://en.support.wordpress.com/map-existing-domain/

Let me know once you have that and we will move forward with the other requests.

    Liz,
“My” Blog: When I go to Blog Page, I see all of my (pathetic) earlier Posts listed Top down with the oldest at the top. Can that order be reversed- Latest at Top, and earliest at the bottom? That’s what I’d like. How to?

And I see them all dated (apparently) on the date Posted. Except for my latest one: INTERIM PAUSE. It is dated in February. Can’t figure out how to correct that to actual current date.

With that, I think maybe I’m good. Except: I still can’t understand why: When I open with the – our-place-in-the-cosmos.com – link that I have saved in my browser Favorites, I can edit all the content as I please. But when other people open it with the same, apparently they Cannot edit it. It’s good this way, but what makes it that?

Liz, you have earned ten times over the right to pass me on to somebody else, but if you’re willing to keep me I am undescribably Grateful. I write you about the Homeowners Association Blog separately next. Allan

Liz, The Homeowners Association (“HOA”) Website. It will be owned and paid for by the Association: Creekside In Sumner Homeowners Association. P.O Box 1164, Sumner, WA 98390. Billings use that address with Attn: Treasurer. It is presently “up” on the net, same HOA ownership. We’ve wrote to Godaddy officially, more than a month ago, to request it be closed and the prorated share of “paid in advance” be refunded. No response. We the HOA have enough other issues to deal with that I suspect we’d just write off the refund if we don’t get it. And I have the HOA Board’s direction to do ahead and get a replacement going.

So I’m ready for the first step. (I think I already said some things about what we want in it, in a msg to you, (I’ll have to “leave this page” to go back to see. Memory isn’t my strong suite.) Allan

Liz, (Allan – HOA Website. Back to zoom 100% 75 to small for me to read :-)

Got so far on the link you gave me to move the creeksideinsumner.com site; to pay $48 for it. I don’t have access to the HOA account, so I can pay for it myself and get reimbursed. But would this mess up the registering the HOA as owner? Want to be sure begfore I make a mistake. Allan

@allanmerry off topic I know but let me be the first to congratulate you as tomorrow this thread will celebrate its first birthday which must be some sort of record here at WordPress.com :)

Liz Karkowski , Good morning! I used the url you gave to “map the “creeksideinsumner” site over to WordPress, and followed the instructions. (The instructions were to include the organizations address is it is for a “company;” which I did because it is a non-profit corporation. I paid $60 on my own CC, and left my own name and address with it since I’ll be “operating” it.)

Bur Problem: when it confirmed, it showed it as a blog. What we intended was a “Website” format, not a Blog. How do I switch it to that?
Do I need to undo this, and start over? Please advise. Thanks, Allan
