You can do it. For some, it works rather well, but be aware that when you’re approached by strangers asking to do guest posts on your blog, they’re probably spammers or over-aggressive marketers. Ethical, competent marketers don’t ask total strangers for favours, and allowing someone to post on your blog is certainly a favour.
Some admins do this by making those people Authors on their blogs. Don’t make them anything higher, or they will be able to edit your posts.
Some do it by telling people to email them the posts, which is more secure as long as you use the Paste from Word feature when you post it in the blog.
How do you benefit from it? Well, you get a day off, and it’s a novelty to have someone else’s writing in your blog; it makes you look like a big cheese. The guest benefits by exposure to your audience (make sure they haven’t put too many links and references to themselves in there, and make sure the post is as least as good as you’d have written. NEVER accept something that you don’t think is as good as your writing, because why would you ever do that to your readers?).
