Allow the full size image in a gallery to be clickable
-
I posted this to the Support Forum and got no response. So I’m trying here.
I’d like to have a gallery of thumbnails that become full sized images in a new window when clicked. But then I’d like these full sized images to be clickable as well, linking to different pages or images.
How would I do this?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there,
There isn’t currently a built in way to make images from within a gallery clickable. You can, however, use HTML to create a link it its caption area.
In case you’re not familiar with HTML, it’s a coding language that’s used to structure websites.
We have an introductory guide to HTML, including steps to use it to create a link, here:
https://en.support.wordpress.com/beginning-html/#adding-a-link
Once you have created your HTML link, navigate to your post and edit the image you’d like to link. You will see the option to add a caption while editing your image, and can enter your HTML directly there.
I can appreciate that these steps are fairly technical, but we’re right here if questions come up along the way.

Thanks for the game try. I’ve written HTML, so that doesn’t scare me.
I tried a page with a very simple thumbnail grid, where one of the four thumbnails was linked to another image. This displayed with the link to the thumbnail as the thumbnail’s caption. When it’s clicked to the fullsized image, that image is not clickable, but the link appearing under it, is. That’s not what I’m looking for.
It doesn’t look as if I can make a gallery work. I also find that the fullsize image insists on showing that image’s filename, that it shows bits of the images immediately preceding and succeeding it, that it’s writing information like the name of the camera that took the photo into the comments section — and I don’t even want a comment section
I guess galleries require an upgraded WordPress.
Thanks again for providing something that comes close….

@thelmalu1 – Galleries were not really intended to be used this way and @siobhyb has given you the only workaround currently available. However, you can link single images inserted individually to whatever you want (other pages, other sites, other whatever). If you are inserting full size images to begin with, this is actually easier.
If you are using the New Dash Post Editor after you’ve inserted your image, make sure it is highlighted and then click the LINK button in the Visual Editor toolbar (looks like a chain), select or paste the link there. You can also add multiple images at once to your post and then link them afterwards.
About the camera metadata info that appears in the Gallery Carousel, that can be turned off site-wide should you choose to use Galleries in the future. Here’s how: https://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/media-settings/#image-gallery-carousel
Comments will be on by default on your entire site and currently there’s no way to turn them off just for the Carousel (without jumping through some hoops first).
Hope that helps.

Thank you, justjennifer, for the information.
It does look as if galleries are not what I want: I’d already tested pages with images that link even deeper than once, but I thought that I might easily pick up the gallery navigation format as well. Apparently not.
