Allowed MIME Types
-
Hello,
We have developed a plugin (https://wordpress.org/plugins/opensheetmusicdisplay/)
that, among other things, enables users to upload MusicXML files to the media library (.mxl, .musicxml, .xml). This is done via the filter: https://developer.wordpress.org/reference/hooks/upload_mimes/ and pattern here (https://wordpress.stackexchange.com/questions/323750/how-to-assign-multiple-file-mime-types-to-extension).This works on other hosts we have tested as well as local development WP instances.
We had a Business level user for wordpress.com reach out to us recently, and it is not working for them. They receive the same error as if the filter were not active (Unknown MIME type).
Does wordpress.com have any additional filtering or blocking of MIME types for media library upload? If so, is there a way for this user to request allowing specific MIME types?Thank you

Hey there, thanks for reaching out. Sounds like a neat plugin. We do typically have limits on the allowed file types here, but I’d think a business plan user can get past those. We can double check.
Has the user been in touch with us too? I’m trying to find what’s been tried already, but I’m not spotting anything recent.

Thanks so much for the response!
The user did not create a post here – Just on our plugin support forum.
Should I request that they open a post here or get in touch in some way?Thank you again.

Hello there,
Do you have a link to that support forum, or perhaps a screenshot so that we can take a look?
Screenshots can be shared via https://snipboard.io/.
Many thanks.

Thanks for the follow-up. The support question is here:
https://wordpress.org/support/topic/uploading-files-23/We did a screenshare and I had the user open their network console to see the response for the upload request. It was a 400 with the message (paraphrased) “Invalid MIME type”.

I’m not seeing any screenshots there.
@jaybocporg – it looks like you’re the site owner here? If so, could you go to your account page and open up a new support ticket?https://wordpress.com/help/contact
Since you have a Business plan, you’ll get priority email support. Once you submit that request you’ll be able to attach those screenshots to the reply from Support. Or, you can upload them to your media library and link to those images when you submit your new support request.
I believe the problem here is that the specific file type from that plugin would normally not be allowed on non-Business sites here at WordPress.com so there’s likely some adjustments they’ll need to make.
Hope that helps! Let us know if you have any questions.

Sorry for the delay, I apparently did not subscribe to this message thread. I have submitted a ticket (#4259301)

So I think the email might have got dismissed because I mentioned a plugin. See response below:
“That is created by a third-party because of that, we don’t have expertise with the product and are unable to provide support for it. For more information, please take a look at our third-party product support policy: https://wordpress.com/support/plugins/third-party-plugins-and-themes-support/”
I’ve emailed back to try to keep the ticket open. Any advice on how to get support to dig into the matter?

Hi there,
I’ve emailed back to try to keep the ticket open. Any advice on how to get support to dig into the matter?
Perfect thanks for doing that. It’s typical for us to not help with 3rd party plugins and the person helping may not have understood the finer points of your issue. I have reopened the ticket as well as added some notes from our investigation to ensure that it gets a closer look.
Thanks for your patience!

Alright, thank you everyone for your support! Seriously, I really appreciate it.
The root cause is that WordPress.com now defaults to the ‘Calypso’ Media interface which does not allow these file types. The Happiness Engineer (Nigel) said he submitted a feature ticket for this Media uploader to accept custom file types added by plugins.
The resolution is to switch to the classic WP-Admin interface. I tried this and it worked exactly as advertised.
Thanks so much!
