even though I have ‘users must be logged in to comment’ unchecked in settings – it still requests user to log in to like or comment. Is their another place I need to change this?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    re: like button use
Just like any other place with a like button, for example, Facebook, one has to register a username account and be logged in to be able to use it. All that’s required to register a WordPress.COM account is a valid email address and many of us do not choose to activate like buttons on our sites. https://en.support.wordpress.com/likes/

If you assume that like button clicks are an accurate and true reflection of engagement with your content then you are not aware of how many like button spammers there are. They click the like buttons on other sites for traffic driving purposes ie. simply so visitors will click their gravatars and visit their sites.

Bottom line: The value of a like button click in no way compares to the value of a thoughtful comment, so encourage commenting.

Your site is public and everyone with internet access can view it. They are not asked to log in unless they try to leave a comment. At that point only a valid email address is required.

The vast and overwhelming majority of all so-called information on the internet is spam. Over 80% of all so-called comments submitted to .wordpress.com blogs every day are spam. Setting up anonymous commenting will result in much more spam.

Spam comes in waves. There are human beings who get paid to post spam. There are robotic programs that post spam. Setting up anonymous commenting is akin to throwing down a welcome mat to spammers and phishers and all their buddies too, as they sell URLs and email addresses to each other for spamming and phishing purposes.

This page > Settings > Discussion is where you set up defaults for comments.

    Discussion Settings
    Other comment settings
_Comment author must fill out name and e-mail
_Users must be registered and logged in to comment

Note that the prompt to submit and email address and a website URL will still appear, but providing an email address and logging in are not required, and you cannot change this so the prompt does not appear.

You can post instructions for your visitors in a text widget if you wish to set up anonymous commenting. That’s easy to do. You can copy and paste this into a text widget:

Readers: Note that the email address and logging in prompts do appear for comments on this blog, but providing an email address and logging in are not required.

Advice: Please be sure to set up full comment moderation on your own blog ie. “An administrator must always approve the comment” because anonymous commenting is bound to increase the amount of spam your blog will receive.
