Alphabetical order and accents
-
Can you fix the way wordpress addresses alphabetical order? I write mainly in French, and some of my page titles contain accents. It looks as though your code treats accents as a symbol and pushes any title that starts with an accent to the top of a list. It does the same when dealing with same letter discrepancy, pushing the accented letter up or using the next letter, if accented, as the tie-break to send said word to the top of the list.
So my question is: can this be fixed so that only letters are taken into account when it comes to page titles?
Thanks for your help on this matter. The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there,
It sounds like you’re referring to how pages are displayed in the top menu of your site. If so, the easiest fix would be to create a custom menu using the steps here:
That way, you have complete control over the order of the pages irregardless of the characters involved.
Let me know if that helps to resolve the issue!

Thanks for the DIY help, but I do believe it’s more of a WordPress-not-respecting-alphabetical-order-protocols issue. E, whether or not it has an accent, comes after A. I really think you guys should look at it on your end.

Hi!
I want to make sure I understand the issue correctly. Currently, when you enter a page title that uses a symbol, that page is automatically pushed to the front of the menu. Is that correct?
Currently, it looks like the automatic menu is respecting the page order correctly:
I tested this on a test blog, and it looks like the pages were ordered correctly there as well:
If I’m misunderstanding, can you explain a bit more?

Hi there,
I never heard back regarding this issue. I waned to check in and see if I misunderstood your question. Let me know!

I did reply directly via email, because I could not add a screencap using this field. As far as the order of the menus go, you are right, the alphabetical order is correct and disregards accents. However, if you go inside the menus, this order is messed up again. Go and have a look at my “tasting archive” menu; you’ll see that “États-Unis” does not land where it should. I would appreciate it if WordPress fixed this.

Hi there,
Thanks for the clarification! I was able to pinpoint the issue and I have brought this back to our team. They are currently looking at it, but I won’t be able to give you a direct timeline for the fix. So, the fastest way would be to update this manually for the time being by going to the États-Unis page and setting the order. It will look like this:
I will let you know as soon as possible once I hear back from the team. Thank you so much for bringing this to our attention and sorry for the inconvenience!
Cheers!

Hi there,
I understand your frustration, so for the time being I’d be happy to reorder the pages for you. If you are okay with this, please let me know and I’ll do it as soon as possible.
Thank you!

Thank you, but I am not quadraplegic.
I could do it myself, you guys have shown me many times how to.
But at the risk of sounding like a broken record, this issue should be fixed at YOUR end with more than just a Band Aid. We are not talking about a “Could you make the letter pink?” type of demand, or even “I”d like for a magical animal whose name starts with the same letter as the menu title to appear next to the word, can you make it happen?” type of fantasy demand.
I’d like for letters with accents (a gift of my native language, and many other languages around the world) to appear where they belong in the alphabetical order, without having to pull a stunt.
Or even better, I’d like for it to happen, without me having to debate this issue and looking like I am the one being capricious.
So no, do not go into my menus and do it for me. Just do what will fix the problem permanently.
P.S.: I did not mean any disrespect to quadraplegic people, who are as courageous and resilient as I will ever be. -
Hi there,
Thank you again for bringing this to our attention. Adam, Rachel and I have all reported this to our developers. They will let me know once it is fixed.
-
Still no good news?
Ok, so my birthday is August 20. Have the issue fixed by then, or I’m moving to another service provider. This issue will take your programmers 5 minutes to fix. The fact that they won’t do it shows me just how little you care. It has become the biggest joke.I’m giving you TWO EXTRA MONTHS to fix it, despite the fact that we are well over three months since the issue had been brought to your attention with no appropriate solution as of now. How’s that, for patience?
Don’t call my bluff, you’ll be disappointed.

Hi there,
Please note that this is not a matter of refusing to take care of a simple issue. Our developers have looked at it and it’s a bit more complicated than a 5 minute fix. They’re still trying to figure out the best way to handle it, so there’s no way for me to know when a fix will be pushed.
If it’s not fixed by your requested date, let me know and I’d be happy to help you move your site elsewhere. In the meantime, if I hear anything I’ll let you as soon as possible.

Well, I’m getting mixed signas then, because at least one of the many WordPress helpers I spoke to seemed to believe it was an easy fix. Get your signals synced, please. I’ll be awaiting good news.
-
Please note that volunteers are not WordPress.com staff, so it may have just been conjecture on their part. I’m unable to control what our volunteers say as our forums are public.
In any case, I was informed that our developers will try to push a fix within the next couple days, but again I cannot promise that will work in exactly 2 days. I’ll keep you updated.

Hi there,
I have good news. One of our developers has deployed a fix and everything looks correct.
Cheers!

It does.
Congratulations to all of you. I have not been the easiest costumer on this issue, and I realize it, but the WordPress team has pulled through.
Thank you for your work and dedication. Until next bug,
Le Sommelier Fou
