Alphabetically Displaying Pages and Subpage Hierarchys

    Hey guys.
I posted this about a week ago and it was recommended I contact support directly. I contacted them but it didn’t prove to be a very helpful experience and so I am asking again for help.

I am a new wordpress user. I set up a little website using the iNove theme. The problem is I am running my site on pages instead of posts (yes I’ve read the pages vs. posts thing and choose to do it anyway, lol).
Now, in iNove there is a great option (which is why I chose it) to have drop down menus of your page hierarchy by holding your mouse over the page title in the top bar.
    Great!
The problem is, my pages are not listen alphabetically, which for my sort of website is a MAJOR problem. I could go through and use the numbering system to arrange my pages in order, but I would have to do this EVERY time I create a new page, having over 100 pages already, this is not really a viable option.
I would greatly appreciate it if someone could point me in the right direction?

Well, since this is a defect with the particular theme, we volunteers can’t help. Option 1 is setting order numbers (as you already know). Option 2 is forgetting the dropdowns and adding the Pages widget for the sidebar. I’d recommend option 2, as (apart from your unwillingness to go through the chore of option 1) I’ve got worse news for you: in Safari the dropdowns don’t show up at all.

Lol thanks. I guess my work was for nothing eh?

  • Unknown's avatar

No it wasn’t for nothing: just activate the Pages widget and you’ll be fine (alphabetical and all).

Hey man thanks thats looking good, jsut one more thing if you dont mind.

Is there a way now so I can have my pages where I have to click on say Effect Reviews, in order for all of the companies to come up? So I click a page in order to bring up the next pages?

You mean links to the subpages on the parent page? If so, unfortunately you’ll have to add the links manually. There are only four themes that do that automatically.

By the way, better set your About page —or another intro page you’ll create— as your front (in Settings > Reading), to get rid of the “Sorry no posts” blurb.

Hey man thanks. That page with no posts will be the main home page, it will contain the news and updates, cheers though.

I don’t mind do it manually, as long as it will work, what is this link thing your reffering to. (sorry for all the questions, Im new to wordpress and have only used geocities free in the past).
Any idea which themes ‘do this automatically.’? Ill have a look now.

Thanks man, tried those four layouts, still doesnt solve the problem of them being alphabetically listed. Ill attempt the links idea.

Forgive me because I’m late to the party here, but I’m on Safari 4.0.3 (mac and xp) and have no issues with the dropdown menus in iNove. The work just fine, even to 3 levels (haven’t checked any further than that).

Thanks for confirming that man, you were the guy who tried to help me the other day I think. Thanks for your help, I contacted support but they did not have much to say, I was quite disappointed to be honest.
Still struggling to alphabetize. It seems ridiculous that there is not an option to put stuff in alphabetical order anyway?

The thing to remember is, with only a couple exceptions, all the themes here were designed by individual authors not associated with wordpress in any way. They each make their own decisions as to how their themes are going to look and operate. For whatever reason, the designer of iNove did not choose to organize the top navigation subpages alphabetically. It may have been on purpose, or perhaps the author didn’t even think of it.

In my comment above I should have said that the dropdown menus operate correctly in Safari for me, but they are not in alphabetical order.

Yeah thanks for that man. I guess the only way to do it is to use that numbering system then, just means five mins extra work everytime I add a page lol.
