I use a free template Able, does that allow for alteration of code with a child template? Is the child allowed for the template?
. . I know very little about code and the info on your link looks horribly complicated, nonetheless I appreciate your quick response of help.

I do have a work-around in place, a post named Alphabetical Post List which I made by trial & error, but ideally would like the Recent Posts in the sidebar to be A to Z as well.

Use the display shortcode: http://en.support.wordpress.com/display-posts-shortcode/ (order by title).
Example: [display-posts orderby="title"] -

but where / how do I insert it? and is it done on every post, or just one?

You can create a page (with a title “My List”, per example) and insert the shortcode there.
