Already have website and domain. Want new website design.

I already have a domain (skeltonhistorygroup.org.uk) registered through 123-reg.com. I already have a website (skeltonhistorygroup.wordpress.com) to which that domain is pointed. I want to give the website a complete re-design but don’t want to take the current site offline while I am doing the rebuild. What I would like to do is set up a completely new website (not Published) and, when I am happy with it, Publish its pages and re-map the domain. Is this the best approach? If so, how do I set up the new design? Oh, perhaps I should stress that I want a website and not a blog. The present site has become cluttered with comments and posts on most of the pages. I want to get back to a clean website.

@justjennifer Thanks for your intervention. That previous post really got my hackles up. I was thinking “If this is the best advice this forum can give, I’ll drop WordPress and go somewhere else for my website hosting.” You’ve successfully retained me as a user. Well done!

@justjennifer I am a webmaster for three different websites on three different domains. the one for Skelton History Group is, as far as I know, a Free site that has never been upgraded. That is true also, I believe, of the one for Boroughgate-Books. The one for Skelton Townscape Heritage project is a paid site, or so I believe.

I had a look at your account and it doesn’t look like the domain skeltonhistorygroup.org.uk is mapped to any WordPress.com site. Could this be that you have another WordPress site that’s hosted elsewhere?
In any case, here on WordPress.com, if you do not want to affect the site https://skeltonhistorygroup.wordpress.com/ in any way, you may create a brand new site and only publish it and map the domain when you’re ready.Here are exact instructions on how to map a custom domain:
