Alt tags

  My understanding is that ‘alt tags’ help search engines find images. Working on that assumption I’d like to add ‘alt tags’ to my images in both new and old posts. If I add them to the images in my media library will it automatically add them to existing posts or do I need to edit each post?
  If I add ‘alt tags’ to a new image when I upload it to my media library will they be taken with it into a new post or should I add the ‘alt tags’ once the image is in the post?
