Hi there, the last time a similar question arose several years ago, we were advised that XMP and IPTC file information gets stripped out of images in the upload process to WordPress.com. I’ve also flagged your thread for Staff input to see if anything has changed in the interim. Thanks for your patience.
Having said that, when inserting images from Pexel or Openverse, the alt text there comes along with the image and appears in our Media Library. ¯_ (ツ)_/¯

I could use Adobe Lightroom or Bridge to put it in an image file property if I know which property WordPress is using to load it. I have put data in every property that seems usable but I get nothing in alt text.
Nevertheless, thanks for the hope. -
Howdy,
At the moment nothing has changed. That data is still stripped upon upload.
I will pass along the your feedback the team about why it could be useful for some users to not have it stripped.

Hey justjenifer – I downloaded six images from Pexel and five from Openverse but there was a blank for alt text. Perhaps the alt text was empty. Any chance you know of an image that has alt text or is there a way to load directly into media from Pexel and Openverse?

Hi again, Are you downloading those images directly from those websites or from within the WordPress.com Post or Page Editor or the Media Library? I’ve added my images directly within the Post/Page Editor or Media Library.

https://wordpress.com/support/openverse/Looking at those images again in the Media Library, some have alt text and others don’t. I’m not sure why that is.
Alt text is also use specific: inside the Post/Page Editor>Image block you’ll find this link to a decision tree https://www.w3.org/WAI/tutorials/images/decision-tree/

I’ve tried downloading Pexel and Openverse to a files and then uploading to the Media catalog. I’ve also tried loading on the fly – Add an image, Select Image, Pexels Free Photos, … I’m thinking not all Pexel and Openverse photos have the alt text attribute loaded with data. That’s why I asked if you have a known photo that has alt text maybe you could send me the Pexel or Openverse link and I could investigate it. Thank you as always.

I’ve spent some time testing this on a site where I hadn’t added Pexel or Openverse images previously, either via the Media Library or in a Post or Page, and was surprised to find there was no Alt Text on the same images I’d added elsewhere that had it.
My only conclusion is that I either manually added the Alt Text field (or copy/pasted from the Title field) or I’ve misread the Title field for the Alt Text field. Here’s an example: (temp screenshots)
I apologize as there’s really not much else I can add at this point. If I do come across a different image example where Alt Text is included, I’ll be happy share that image here.

Very good, thanks so much for your assistance. In the process of creating, I find I upload an image and then go back and crop or adjust the color when I see it on the page or on a different device and it would be great to be able to fill the alt text and description once before uploading. So, it’s worth some of my time to track down that possibility.
