You can buy domain mapping feature which allow you to use custom domain you purchased outside wordpress.com
This page shows you how to do it: https://en.support.wordpress.com/map-existing-domain/

What I required was to quote 123 ‘exact instructions for the dns records from WordPress so we can fully assist with pointing the domain to your website’ is it possible for you to supply these details?

yes I did read it I am not very computer literate so its not easy
further response from 123 below
I am afraid that the information you have provided is not related to any modifications which can be made from our 123-reg Control Panel.
From what I can see the option – “Add domain mapping” might be the one to use and from the instructions:
“Add domain mapping Go to the Domains page, select your site, and choose the Add Domain option.” – this seems to be made from WordPress. Here’s something that I have found on WordPress support: https://en.support.wordpress.com/map-existing-domain/
As you can see in the above guide link I have provided in order to use a domain name with a WordPress.com site, the domains name servers need to point to the WordPress name servers:
I can advise you to contact WordPress and in case name servers changes are need these can be done via your 123-reg Control Panel as shown in the support article below:
https://www.123-reg.co.uk/support/answers/Domains/Domain-Configuration/how-do-i-change-the-nameservers-for-my-domain-name-1206/
However you should ask for their clear instructions first. Since this is a 3rd party and we do not manage this, it is their instruction that needs to be followed.
I am asking for your instructions that’s all -
@auxclass
I believe 123 reg requested dns record so they can forward the domain to the free wordpress address.While this can be done, it’s not recommended since wordpress server has dynamic IP and it can change without notification.
@vivlm
There’s been miscommunication issue here. If you already have domain purchased from 123-reg, it’s normal for them to ask for dns record so they can help you with redirection.This, explicitly can be done, but like I mentioned before, wordpress.com server IP is dynamic, so if one day it changes, your domain won’t work anymore since the dns record change too.
wordpress.com use domain mapping, in order to be able to use, you first need to purchase the feature which cost $13. Once activated, you then can choose the primary address, which is the one you bought from 123reg.
The next step is to tell 123reg to point the domain to wordpress nameserver, details of this can be seen from the link I gave previously. You’re then all set :)
Do you roughly get the idea now?

i’ve purchased the $11 deal re domain name
these are the further instructions
Finish setting up your domain
The domain vivlm.com still has to be configured to work with WordPress.com.You will need to log into your registrar’s site and change the “Name Ive Servers” to:
ns1.wordpress.com
ns2.wordpress.com
ns3.wordpress.com
Once you make the change, just wait a few hours and the domain should start loading your site automatically.
I have sent this to 123

So just to recap,
1. You need to purchase domain mapping from wordpress.com first.
Without this, wordpress.com won’t allow 123reg to connect.
2. Once you’ve purchased, you need to change the primary site to the vivlm.com
3. From 123reg site, log in and change the nameserver:
ns1.wordpress.com
ns2.wordpress.com
ns3.wordpress.com
4. Wait few hours and You’re set.
