Alternative Payment Methods in the UK
-
I am creating a web site for a charity that has a UK bank account whose bank card is not a debit card i.e. it doesn’t have a CVV number. Therefore I’m unable to upgrade to your Business plan either with this card or by the charity’s Paypal account that also wants a CVV number.
Is there any other way I can pay for an upgrade to the Business Plan? Perhaps I could set up a direct debit or standing order? The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there,
I am tagging this topic for Staff to have a look and they will help you with your question.

Although Staff will respond when they get to this thread, it may also be possible for the charity to add their UK bank account directly to PayPal. Please see this PayPal support guide: https://www.paypal.com/uk/selfhelp/article/how-do-i-add-my-bank-account-to-my-paypal-account-faq686
If there are any questions on that, please contact PayPal support.

Hi sthelena778402324,
What type of card are you trying to use?
Perhaps I could set up a direct debit or standing order?
We are unable to take payments for upgrades using direct debits or standing order.
Once I know more about your card type, I will look into your options.
Thanks!

Hi @gemmacevans – is it possible to pay for site upgrades directly via PayPal using a linked bank account instead of a credit card? I’d just like to confirm. :) Thanks.
Edited to add: also asking for a friend.

Hi @justjennifer,
I’m just checking on this because our documentation says:
Because payments for WordPress.com subscriptions are recurring you will still need a backup funding source connected to your PayPal account
So I want to find out whether that would need to be a card or not.

Hi sthelena778402324,
I’ve spoken to our payments team and they suggested linking a bank account to your PayPal account, then try using that to pay for the upgrade.
Because payments to WordPress.com are subscription based, you will still need to add a backup funding source — which will be used to complete the purchase if they are unable to process a payment from your bank account.
PayPal doesn’t provide very much information about what the backup funding source needs to be so I’d be interested to know how you get on.

Thanks for that update, @gemmacevans.
Apologies. This begs a slightly different question, then. Can one pay for WPcom upgrades via PayPal by using funds in one’s PayPal account? In this case, a credit card or bank account linked to it would be the “backup funding source.”
*I assume so given:
Because payments for WordPress.com subscriptions are recurring you will still need a backup funding source connected to your PayPal account, even if you have funds in that account.

Correct. You can pay using funds already in the account, but PayPal requires that there still be a card or bank account connected on their end.

Many thanks for all your help. I was worried that I was asking an obvious question, but from the number of posts it looks like it was quite a poser.
Kind Regards
