Alto Focus collage on the front page

  • Unknown's avatar

In the Alto Focus theme, I really like how the front page was a long collage of pictorial links of varied sizes. I figured out how to get it to do the collaging–it would be nice to warn people that it is not set up to do that from the outset–but I don’t know

    1) how or if there is any way to control the relative sizes of the pictures being shown on that front page–one in particular is showing up tiny on that front page–and

    2) now that I have more than 5 things on there, one has apparently fallen off the front page and there’s an “Older Posts” link. Well, again on the demo, there was quite a long page of multiple collage-y things before you got to the “Older Posts” link. Five items only makes one line of things on a computer screen, nothing like the interesting collage of pictures of different sizes in the demo. How can I tell it to let things just “pile up” on the front page? In fact, if possible, I would prefer to just let it scroll down basically unendingly, so if someone was persistent enough to go all the way down to my first post, they could still see that.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

We have a theme customizer that allows us to preview themes so we can see what they are like prior to switching.
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/customizer/

Every theme has a detailed theme description page. This one is at https://wordpress.com/theme/altofocusfor it, and the live demo site link is found.

If you would prefer to forego a single featured image above your post and use this space to showcase an entire set of photos, insert a gallery into your post and select the “Slideshow” display option — we’ll take care of the rest.

All related support docs are at https://en.support.wordpress.com/

Yes, I looked around at the demo (although I didn’t do the customizer first, since I just started out and figured I would try to start out with this one).

I’m fine with using single featured images above the posts, it’s the main page of the site that I would like to look like the collage-y thing the demo shows.

Oh! P.S. I would also like help with whether, on the “Testimonials” page, the text that says “Archives: Testimonials” can just be removed. I can’t find any way to do that.

Oops! I’m sorry I messed up posting the link to the theme set up above.

Every theme has a detailed theme description page. This one is at https://wordpress.com/theme/altofocus for it, and the live demo site link is found.

Yes, again, I’ve been there and read around through it; I don’t see anything that addresses my questions there, though.

akabeille – in your Customizer’s Featured Content panel, check the box next to “Display tag content in all listings.” Taht should get your featured posts appearing larger and with an orange background hover colour.

I tried that; it does not seem to make any difference.

Further, I would still like to know how to set the front page so that it will show more than only five posts before displaying the “Older Posts” link. Five pictures doesn’t even start to make that nice “collage” feel from the demo.

Finally, I still would like to know how to remove the text “Archived: Testimonials” from the “Testimonials” page (which I have changed the link text to “Productions”).

Thanks for your patience with my cluelessness!

  • Howdy @akabeille,

    To address this:

    1) how or if there is any way to control the relative sizes of the pictures being shown on that front page–one in particular is showing up tiny on that front page–and

I see two images that are pretty small, but honestly the original images you uploaded are also quite tiny. Try uploading images that are at least 2x larger than what you want to display.

    2) now that I have more than 5 things on there, one has apparently fallen off the front page

Ah, this is because of an old setting that determines how many posts to display per page load. You can find that here:
    https://akabeille.wordpress.com/wp-admin/options-reading.php

“Blog pages show at most” is set to 5. Maybe try 10 or 12?

  • Finally, I still would like to know how to remove the text “Archived: Testimonials” from the “Testimonials” page (which I have changed the link text to “Productions”).

You *might* be able to do this by heading to Customize > Content Options and opting not to display the category on the page. I’m not sure. You could also try making a testimonials page with a shortcode to see if you like that format. Just add a new page and add this:

    [testimonials columns=2 showposts=10 orderby=title]

The other option is to upgrade to a plan that supports CSS. We could then give you a code to hide “Archived: Testimonials”

Supernovia: THANKS. For my number 2 question, that definitely helps!!!

For getting rid of “Archived: Testimonials,” that first suggestion doesn’t seem to have worked, and I’m not very pleased with the way the “page-with-code came out–especially since I can’t figure out how to change the font of the text that then shows up on the page, so it doesn’t really match the rest of the site. As for upgrading to a plan that supports CSS, I have no idea what CSS even is, so that would probably be over my head; plus since my husband recently lost his position and I have not found paying work yet, anything that requires adding to our bills is a non-starter, for now.

However, with my number 1 question, I realize that some of the images are small, but one that I know is quite large still reads really small on the front page, even though it is tagged “featured”–it’s the very first one, the one of daisies, that was falling off the page when it was set to only display five posts, so maybe you didn’t see that one?

  • CSS would let us give you a code to hide “Archive: Testimonials” . It’s available in Premium and Business, but I understand not worrying about that for now.

The one of the daisies is very wide and short, so when you put it in a column, it has to shrink to fit.

Can you try cropping it to a square or a more proportional rectangle? Images that are very tall, very short, or very small won’t display as nicely in this theme.
