AltoFocus demo – how to get landscape images to span columns

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi

The AltoFocus theme Info page shows that landscape images can span more than one column/cell of the front page grid.

I’m mocking-up a website for my art-student niece on a free plan (zero budget!) but my landscape images are just being scaled down to fit in a single column/cell. Is this spanning something it is necessary to upgrade to CSS capability to achieve with AltoFocus?

Hi there, What you are looking at on the theme showcase page and the demo is the home page with Featured Content which highlights posts in a specific tag on your site.

Have a look here https://wordpress.com/theme/altofocus/ and scroll down a bit until you see the section on Featured Content

Let us know if you have any further question about this.

Hi, thanks for your reply Jennifer

I have managed to emulate the home page on the showcase page, using featured content with tags, as you suggest, but my question is really how I can get my landscape images to span more than one column on the home page (like the photo of the beach does on the demo page)… all my landscape images seem to scale down to fit within a single column, so they end up very small.

    Many thanks

Hello again it’s my understanding that it’s only necessary to specify the tag under “Featured Content” in order for landscape images to display larger on the homepage.

However, something seems off or incomplete in the instructions though. In order to get the larger landscape image, on my shutterclutter site, I also had to check the box under Featured Content> “Display tag content in all listings”.

I’ve gone ahead and tagged this for Staff attention. Thanks for your patience while they get back to this thread.

Let me also mention that looking through your site, I do not see categories or tags on any of the posts I looked at.

The Featured Content needs to have posts tagged in order for it to work. Have a look at this Support guide to tagging your posts.

    Organize Posts with Tags

Hi Jennifer, and thank you again

I took your advice and added additional tags (randomly) to all the posts. I have checked that the ‘featured’ tag is the one nominated in the Themes-Customize-FeaturedContent – Tag name box, since all the posts have that tag. I have also checked the ‘Display tag content in all listings’ box (I think the reason they weren’t visible before is that it was unchecked.

I’ve obviously done something daft somewhere because the landscapes are still confined to a single column … and I’ve just noticed that a rather large portrait further down the front page has been scaled to tiny!

Many thanks for your help, and for tagging this for staff attention. It’s very kind of you. Btw, I love the photos on your site. It looks awesome.

  • Hi there,

With computers, stuff like capital letters matter :)

I updated the tag specified in your site’s Customizer from “Featured” to “featured” and now all your tagged images are displaying over two columns.

Because of the number of posts you have tagged it kind of loses the intended effect for this theme, though. I’d recommend you restrict using the featured tag only to two or three posts you want to highlight, and let the others show the smaller thumbnails. Then rotate the posts that have the tag added every few days to vary the posts that show with the bigger image.

@kokkieh, thanks for looking and correcting on @ukpoliticos’ site.

On my shutterclutter blog using Altofocus, I could not get the Featured Content posts to display larger unless I also ticked the “Display tag content in all listings” box in the Customizer. Otherwise, there was no change to the frontpage and without that tickbox checked, the posts with the Featured Content tag actually disappeared from the frontpage.

Also, can I make a suggestion for the Featured Content area in the Customizer? If a specific tag is used there, it would be great to call up a list of recently or most-used tags to select from rather than try to remember how a specific tag is formatted. Thanks. :)

@bornconfuse – rather than post into an unrelated thread, Staff and volunteers can better assist you if you open your own forum thread at https://wordpress.com/help/contact and please make sure to include a link to the site you need help with. Thanks.

    Thanks so much Kokkieh

I wrongly assumed that I had to give every post the ‘featured’ tag in order for it to show up on the front page at all. My mistake! I have now removed the ‘featured’ tag from most of my posts. Some of them have disappeared from the front page, but not others.

Would you mind clarifying what it is I need to do to make sure they are featured on the front page? I have obviously hit on it accidentally with some posts but not others!

Thanks so much for your help. I really appreciate it!

Sorry, I phrased that badly. To be clearer, I meant to ask what it is I need to do to make sure they appear on the front page?

    Many thanks, Colette

Hello again Colette, what you are describing sounds like what I’ve also encountered and wrote about in my earlier reply to @kokkieh as well.

What I had to do to get my tagged posts to appear on the front page was to tick the additional box in the Featured Content area of the Customizer “Display tag content in all listings.” However, that bit of information doesn’t seem to be mentioned in the Theme Showcase page for Altofocus.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi again

You’re absolutely right. That did it. I had unticked that box because I wrongly thought it had something to do with displaying all the tag names on the post pages, and I had wanted to keep them minimalist. I see now that I confused Display tag contents in all listings with unchecking the Display tags box in the Contents Options section of the Customizer.

I do have another question about this theme, but it’s about sliders, so I assume the right thing to do is to start another thread.

Thanks so much for your help. It is very much appreciated.

Hi again, I see you’ve opened a separate thread for the additional question about the Altofocus theme: https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/altofocus-theme-image-slider-on-post-pages-like-on-demo-site?replies=2#post-3051892

Still looking forward to Staff input in this thread about the “missing” information on the Altofocus theme showcase page. (And also want to make sure that my suggestion for Featured Content/Tags is noted.) Thanks. :)

Thanks for pointing that out, @justjennifer. I’ve added clarification to the doc in that regard.

Also, can I make a suggestion for the Featured Content area in the Customizer? If a specific tag is used there, it would be great to call up a list of recently or most-used tags to select from rather than try to remember how a specific tag is formatted

I think the idea here is that one would set a unique tag in the Customizer, and then explicitly add that tag to posts that should be featured, rather than setting an existing tag as the featured content tag. I can see having a tag list in the Customizer causing its own set of problems.

I agree that this can be more intuitive, though, but any changes there would have to come from Core, where they are currently working on Customizer improvements alongside the Gutenberg editor.

  • Unknown's avatar

Many thanks @kokkieh. I’ll politely agree to disagree about needing to create a special tag rather than use an existing one. However, maybe adding a special tag to posts is also something that should be added to the theme’s showcase page. Otherwise we don’t have all the information we need to get where we want to go. Thanks again.

  • However, maybe adding a special tag to posts is also something that should be added to the theme’s showcase page.

That’s already there, in step 5:

To set up the Featured Content area:

    1. Navigate to Customize → Featured Content.
    2. Enter the name of a tag.
    3. Make sure the “Display tag content in all listings” box is ticked.
    4. Click the blue “Save” button at the bottom.
    5. Create at least a few posts (or pages) and assign the tag you declared under Customize → Featured Content.

    Or am I misunderstanding you?

  • Unknown's avatar

Hm, It’s Point 2 that might need some clarification if by

I think the idea here is that one would set a unique tag in the Customizer

you meant one needs to create a separate, special tag rather than use an existing one.

I mean, it’s possible to copy/paste an existing tag from tags in the Dashboard, if somewhat inconvenient. If one just types the tag without getting the formatting right then as you pointed out “With computers, stuff like capital letters matter” and so the larger images still won’t display. Looking at the front facing tags on posts is no help because Altofocus’ displays both categories and tags in all caps.

Sorry for being nit-picky about this. I’ll go put the kettle on. ;)

  • Unknown's avatar

    Jennifer

On the topic of tags, I may have misunderstood your point, but when setting up a post, when I click my cursor into the tags box (in the Post Settings section) I see a drop-down list of previous tags to choose from, so that I don’t have to re-type tags each time, I simply scroll down and select a tag previously used. Each time I type a new tag, it is automatically added to this drop-down list.

Do forgive me if I have missed the point entirely and stated the obvious.
