AltoFocus Theme – Image slider on post pages like on demo site
-
I can’t find out how to create an image slider in the header section of Posts, Pages or Portfolio entries, like the one depicted on the demo site. The best I can achieve is to insert a slideshow in the post/page content area, but this is much less attractive.
When setting the Featured Image for posts and pages, I have tried selecting more than one image in order to create a gallery, but it doesn’t seem possible to select more than one.
Would appreciate any help. Many thanks!

I should perhaps explain that I do mean an image slider in the Featured Image section at the top of posts/pages, not the post slider that appears in the content area to scroll backwards and forward between posts.
Thank you!

Hi again, please link to a post or page on your site where you’ve tried to use the “slider” you mention.
Are you referring to what is going on in this demo post? https://altofocusdemo.wordpress.com/2013/05/23/gallery-test/ If so, you do need to use a gallery slideshow in your post; none of the other gallery “types” will create that special header slideshow.
If you are having trouble selecting multiple images when you go to add Media to your post, please let us know what browser and version, and which OS you are using.

Hi Jennifer
Yes, I hadn’t seen that one, but that’s the sort of thing I’m trying to achieve. There are two images of sliders on the AltoFocus info page … one in the Overview section on the information page, under the heading Galleries (the page/post pictured is called Gallery Test: A Slideshow Gallery in AltoFocus).
The second is in the live Demo … if you click on the front-page thumbnail called Coffee Morning (top left). That slider looks fantastic but it’s in the Featured Image section at the top.
When add a Featured Image, I try to select more than one so that I can make a slideshow gallery in the Featured Image section at the top of the post, but it won’t let me select more than one. The best I have managed is to stick a slideshow gallery in the content area of the post itself … definitely underwhelming! https://alicepeake.wordpress.com/2017/11/28/my-gallery-post/
I’m using Safari and MacOS Sierra 10.12.6
Thanks again for your help. You are very kind!

P.S. I have just upgraded to MacOS High Sierra v.10.13.1 and there’s no change. I have also tried in Chrome and Firefox. Thanks.

Hello again. You do not add the gallery slideshow in the featured image module of the post editor but in your post. Don’t add any featured image. This will make the gallery slideshow appear in the header area. Hope that is clearer. Let me know if that works for you. Sorry for the brevity but I am not at my computer.

I so have a gallery slideshow in my post, but I have now removed the featured image on your advice. Unfortunately, the gallery slideshow still appears in my post. It isn’t sitting in my header area.
The strange thing is, when I view my post with the customiser window open, it now looks perfect, just like in the demo – the full-size slideshow is in the post header – but when I close the customiser window and view the post normally, it reverts position to the post page and it looks horrible again.
-
Hello again, initially when I set up my shutterclutter site I also encountered this issue where the gallery slideshow didn’t appear in the header area on Altofocus, so I’ve tagged this for Staff attention. Meantime I’ll head over to my blog and test as well.
-
Also are you creating or editing your post in the WP Admin Post Editor at https://alicepeake.wordpress.com/wp-admin/post-new.php or in the Calypso Editor at https://wordpress.com/posts ?
Try also adding some other content to your gallery post in addition to the gallery slideshow.
-
Just a quick test from me. Creating a gallery slideshow in a new post in both WP Admin and Calypso resulted in the slideshow header. I am currently on a Win10Pro PC/FF57.0.1 (64-bit)

On your gallery-header-related advice, I have tried both, with and without additional content, but the gallery slideshow still won’t position itself in the header. I have just tried creating a new post with gallery on my son’s laptop, which runs Windows 10, but my gallery still won’t budge.
This might suggest that there’s something wrong with the way I’m doing it. When creating a gallery, I have tried all 3 of the ‘Link to’ options (Attachment Page; Media File and None), but no luck with any of them.
I wonder why it looks ‘right’ (i.e. the gallery is in the header) when the Customiser menu is open, but not when the post is viewed normally.
-
@ukpoliticos When you say
When creating a gallery, I have tried all 3 of the ‘Link to’ options (Attachment Page; Media File and None), but no luck with any of them.
please note that the gallery slideshow does not accept any of those options. Here’s our support guide to creating galleries https://en.support.wordpress.com/gallery/ which is worth a read if you haven’t.
After you insert the gallery slideshow, do you Preview your post directly from the Post Editor by clicking on that little “eye” icon at the top of the screen or only in the Customizer?
I’ve emptied my browser cache, looked at your post in a Private window, and the slideshow https://alicepeake.wordpress.com/2017/11/28/my-gallery-post/ is definitely not in the header. (temp screenshot)
That’s why I tagged this thread for Staff. Perhaps they have an idea as to what is causing this to fail.
-
Thank you for tagging it, Jennifer
I have been through the support guide and, although it hasn’t showed me how to overcome the problem, it did show me that I can go to WP-admin and change the background colour setting of slideshows from black to white, which I have done … but that hasn’t worked either!
Also, by not including a featured image on the gallery post, I end up with an empty box among my thumbnail images on the front page. I’m not sure how to prevent this from happening. Is it something you have managed to do?
Anyway, back to the original problem of the slideshow position … thank you again for flagging this for staff and I appreciate all your efforts. I really do! I hope someone will be able to explain how to achieve the ‘demo look’ because I don’t find the info page sufficiently comprehensive.
Thanks again!

Hello again, I’ve gone through my original forum thread on this same topic and perhaps you need to do what @kokkieh advised there, specifically:
please go to the Customizer and just resave the featured image settings under content options? Uncheck a box, save, and then check it again. Specifically, the “featured image on single post” should be selected when you’re done.
Please try that and let us know if that resolves the issue for you.

Hello again
This worked! Yay! What’s more, it works even when I set a Featured Image (to avoid a blank box on the front page), so I tried making a JPEG saying ‘Gallery’ which now sits among the thumbnails on the front page. It’s just what I wanted! I think my niece will love it!
Is it possible to get rid of the ‘Related’ posts on the post page without undoing all your good work on my behalf?
You’re a star, Jennifer. Thank you so much!
-
I’m glad that it worked! Jennifer is the best ;)
To remove the Related Posts, go to My Sites > Settings, select the Traffic tab and toggle off the Show related content after posts option.

@ukpoliticos You’re most welcome! I’m happy that you finally got this working.
@fstat – At the same time, I’m a little dismayed that there is still no mention in the Altofocus theme documentation about needing to have “featured image on single post” checked in Content Options for this to work. It would be immensely helpful.
-
Thank you fstat. That worked. My Related Posts are no longer visible and the site looks as ‘clean’ as my niece envisaged. Thank you!
Jennifer, shall I leave this thread status as ‘not resolved’ pending closure on the ‘featured image on single post’ issue?
Thanks again for all your kind help, Colette
