Alves theme – customisation options missing on hosted site

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi everyone,

I’m using the Alves theme on a WordPress.org install on a hosted site (in staging so I can’t share a link currently). I first tried out the theme to test it on a free blog site via WordPress.com.

As well as the same blocks not being available–such as the new ‘Blog Posts’ block–on the hosted version (which is annoying, as it affects some of the available options, but I was aware of this), I have noticed that the customisation options are also different.

For example, the option to easily customise colours and backgrounds is not appearing. Is this right? I can do this via CSS but I want to check before I start doing this.

    Thank you for any help,
    Helen

  • Hello there,

    Many thanks for reaching out.

As far I know the colours and background settings should be present. Can I check where you obtained the theme from please so that I can take a look please?

Can you also install the version of the theme from this link here too please: https://wordpress.com/theme/alves > scroll down > download.

With regards to the Blog Post Block, these are blocks available on WordPress.com and are not theme specific.

I hope this helps thus far.

Hi @aleone89, thank you for your answer. Yes, that’s where I downloaded it from in the first place, and then uploaded it to my themes on my self-hosted site.

With respect to the ‘Blog Post’ block (which was available on WordPress.com), the only similar block that exists via my one-click install is ‘Latest Posts’ (I searched for the ‘Blog Post’ block to install it as an extra block – as I did with the ‘Layout Grid’ block – but I couldn’t locate it).

Here’s a screengrab of what I can see via the dashboard; as you can see, the ‘Colors and Backgrounds’ tab is missing.

Thanks again — it’s a lovely theme and I’m just ironing out a few things to my taste! Helen

  • Hi there,

Appologies I’m not sure that we caught the fact that you are using the self-hosted version of the Alves theme. The Colors & Backgrounds tab is only found on WordPress.com so you are correct that this is something that you would not see on a self-hosted or localhost site. To make those changes would require modifying the theme CSS instead.

As for the Blog Posts Block, that is also specific to WordPress.com, but you may be able to add it to your site by manually installing the Newspack plugin (and related Newspack Blocks plugins) from here: https://newspack.pub/support/plugins/

We use the Newspack “blog posts” block with very few changes, so you may be able to use it on your self-hosted site as well.

Hope that helps. Please let us know if you have any more questions.
