Am I allowed to create wordpress blogs for people and charge them for it?

  • Unknown's avatar

I am considering using wordpress to create blogs/ online presence for people or clients, I am wondering if this is allowed? Would I just have to make sure I credit wordpress and the theme used?

    Many Thanks

Are you talking specifically about WordPress.com?Or WordPress in general?

People can pretty much charge for services they offer, but I think you might want to read this, http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/ , because I am not certain you quite understand the nature of the wordpress.com blogging system.

You couldn’t remove the credits to WordPress and the theme for a WordPress.com blog even if you created the blogs for people for no charge at all.

WordPress.org provides free software that a user can install on a host and then have complete control over the site and can tweak the php and CSS to their heart’s content, as well as offer advertising, use plug-ins, and many other things that wp.com users cannot do.

WordPress.com offers a free, multiuser blogging platform. There is no advertising allowed, and we can only use the widgets that come built-in with the wordpress.com dashboard. Limited CSS editing is allowed with the Custom Design upgrade.

There are many other differences, and you should also acquaint yourself with the Terms of Service for wordpress.com: http://en.support.wordpress.com/topic/tos-copyright/ .

~~rain! I was interrupted several times while trying to answer this — I missed your response! (Where’d your “member” link go to?)

And I should have said *there is no user advertising allowed* — wp.com does run advertising on the blogs unless a user pays for the no-ads upgrade.

Rumor has it that rain used a dirty word one too many times in the Forum – but that is just guess – it is a shame she is not getting credit for seems to me 23,000 assists over the years if my fuzzy memory is close –

ah thank you for your responses, I have been using wordpress.com as I thought this might be easier to use as the hosting/setup is sorted , I do understand that it is less flexible etc than the wordpress software. I am now wondering though if it would be beneficial all round if I arrange hosting myself then download the software if I’m making sites for people. Thanks again:)

@auxclass How bizarre! So no fancy algorithm figuring out the ratio of “naughty-to-nice,” huh?

I’m glad she can keep helping out, but it’s a bit peculiar. Guess it’s a lesson in something-or-other, though!

    @expressdesign: You’re welcome! Good luck!

I have no idea why the “Member” link is missing, but it’s been missing since last week, when I got suspended for two days for dropping an F bomb at a spammer.
    https://en.forums.wordpress.com/profile/raincoaster still works.

I have gotten paid to set up WP.com blogs, but it’s really important to understand the differences between the types of WP there are. It would hardly be fair to charge someone and set them up here if, for instance, they wanted to run Flash.

Many people get some sort of reseller account at a host company then sell the site and use the .ORG software – bit more work and such but you might make a little more – and also collect a bit every month – but I think the margins are a bit slim – others just set sites up on a preferred host and charge for the time to set the site up – a bit cleaner for the client I guess.

Some companies already have their own web sites and they add the .ORG software to it and hire someone to make the WordPress part look close to the original site – and still other companies shift the whole site to a .ORG install.

@raincoaster Goshdarned spammers! They really mess things up, and not just in the most obvious ways.

I’m feeling pretty uncharitable toward spammers today (not that I can usually muster anything kinder than derision toward them, anyway!) after one of the other sites I post to has been suddenly getting a whole lot of really stupid spam in the comments areas, which has to be taken care of by the already over-extended volunteers there. Yeah, I think F-bombing a spammer is a completely understandable response, particularly if it was an individual who was extremely annoying and not just some spam-botty type nonsense.

yeh, I think I am struggling to fully understand the difference between wp.com and org.?? For example can I set a company up who want to treat the blod as there main website? or would it be advisable to do this with the wordpress software and own hosting? I would hate to set one up and for it to be closed down or something!!

    Thanks.

WordPress.COM is good for small businesses and individual professionals who don’t have complex needs, but simply want a web presence with good SEO and easy to use.

WordPress.ORG is capable of tracking affiliate links, hosting advertising, e-commerce, Flash, javascript, and things that haven’t even been invented yet. It’s also infinitely customizable in terms of appearance, while WP.com is not.

As for spammers on these forums, please don’t feed them with “clever” remarks: a simple modlook tag (or even include who the spammer is on a long thread) will call attention to a thread so I can delete it.

I understand your preference for a clean forum. Please understand my preference for snark.
