Am I allowed to host a giveaway on my blog?
-
I have a question about giveaways on WordPress.com. I was thinking of doing a give away for an advanced ebook copy of a book I will be reviewing. Is the allowed under the terms of wordpress.com? For that matter, are any giveaways allowed on WordPress.com? If so, can you describe the types of giveaways that would follow your terms?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there,
In general, giveaways are fine as long as they don’t violate our Terms of Service, which can be found here:
Hope that helps. Please let me know if you have any further questions.

I read that, but I don’t see the word giveaway in there. Someone told me blogs have been taken down due to giveaways that go against those terms, but I don’t have a clear understanding.
I will be reviewing a book I read on my blog and the author has asked if I wanted to host a giveaway for an ebook version of the book I will be reviewing. I was considering using Rafflecopter so that people could enter by following us on social networks or commenting on the blog. Can you tell me if anything in that violates Terms of Service?

I can understand your confusion. Does this blog post offer you some guidance you can use?

That blog provides good information. It sounds just like what I want to do. I want to give away an ebook written by another blogger on my blog and have entries for following her social media pages and my own. However, this blogger will soon be published. The book I would be giving away is an advanced copy of a book that will be sold in stores in a month.
I guess what I’m looking for is a yes or a no. Is that something I am allowed to do or not? Something that list out the specific things you do and don’t allow when it comes to giveaways would be more helpful than anything else. I don’t want to unknowingly do something that is against ToS. I’ve heard some people have had their accounts suspended for holding a giveaway that violated ToS.

I am going to ask for some clarification here from our TOS team, and will update you once I hear back.
I was considering using Rafflecopter so that people could enter by following us on social networks or commenting on the blog.
Unfortunately, blogs hosted on WordPress.com cannot use Rafflecopter as it’s a Javscript widget and Javascript is stripped out by our software to preserve security, as it is a common vector for attacks.
This is the tradeoff we make in order to keep the millions of sites we host running at top speed with virtually no downtime.

Following up here: Yes, in this instance you have nothing to worry about.
We would be concerned if you were trying to set up a “giveaway website” or using spam content to generate traffic. You have a nice blog with original content, and giveaways do not sound like your primary mission with the site, so have fun! :)
