Am I allowed to publish pictures from homepages ( like newspaper)

Hello all together. I am quite new here and there is one major question that I have. I know that you are normally not allowed to publish pics just like this, ( copy -paste).
What happens when I have for example a screenshot of my desktop and when I clearly refer to the source. Does this change anything? i wanted to make my blog more lifely by refering to several pictures, articles of newspapers… ( mostly online newspapers)…. would I get problems by publishing something like that on my blog?
maybe you can help me with this question. thanks a lot :)

Copyright is a complicated thing, but the short form is this: all those pictures belong to someone else, and they pretty much always have the right to prevent anyone else from using them if that’s what they want to do. Very often, though, they don’t mind; there are things you can do to increase the likelihood they won’t mind. Try these and see how it goes:

    – Ask them for permission. That virtually always works, but if you’re dealing with a major newspaper or something they might not bother getting back to you, be aware.

    – Use a thumbnail of the image: the general standard is, if the image is 150 pixels across it’s widest dimension or smaller, it’s okay. This is NOT firmly established in courts, etc, but it’s a generally accepted practice. People are going to pile on me for saying it, but it’s true.

    – Link the image directly to the source page, and credit it in words. As in: the picture is clickable and goes to the Chicago Tribune or wherever you got it from, and you put “pic source Chicago Tribune”. Media organizations LOVE to be linked to, and hey, so do bloggers.

    – Whenever possible, link to the ultimate source of the image. If you get it from a blog that says they got it from PixRUs.com, link to PixRUs.com, not the blog you found it on. THe original source should always get credit. Please NEVER link to something like Sciencedigg.com that steals pictures from other places and doesn’t credit them. They don’t deserve any clicks: they’re just diggbait with ads.

Heck, that’s Google’s excuse for keeping and indexing their thumbnails. :)

Only thing I’ll add in is to link directly to the page or post or article where you got the images from. You can throw in a link to the home page as well as extra credit but to the page would be best so that folks can click through and see where they’re coming from. Also don’t link directly to the images themselves on the other site. That’s called deeplinking and many folks frown on that as, if the other site is running adverts, it uses their bandwidth and doesn’t give them anything back.
