Am I allowed to remove a WordPress.com Subscriber?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hey folks!

I noticed in the new subscriptions list the subscribers are split into e-mail subscribers and WordPress.com Subscribers.

I have what they call a “troll” problem. {My first troll, yay! Not a good feeling.} Anyways they are subscribed to me through WordPress but not through e-mail subscription. I know there is a way to remove them through e-mail subscription but I don’t see a way I can remove them through WordPress.com subscription.

Are we not allowed to removed them? Or is there no way? This person’s been really bothering me. Thank you!

P.S. By the way I HAVE moderated my comments and filtered their info so that if they were to try to comment it goes to spam. I’m just wondering if I can take the last step I mentioned above. Thanks!

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Did you do a forum search? Results >

Email subscribers can be manually removed by clicking on the remove subscriber link under the subscriber: http://en.support.wordpress.com/blog-subscriptions/#subscription-statistics-removing-subscribers

Yes I saw that. But I’m not talking about e-mail subscribers. It appears that the subscribers have been split up into “wordpress” and “e-mail subscribers.”

The person I am talking about is under “wordpress subscribers” and there seems to be no button to remove them.

Does anyone get what I’m talking about? It used to be just e-mail subscribers and then it was split up.

It looks like you can’t remove someone if they subscribed as a WordPress.com user…

If they have subscribed to the blog itself through their “subscribe” button in their grey admin bar, then you cannot delete them. Email subscribers can be deleted though.

For trolls, you can “blacklist” them at settings > discussion toward the bottom of that page. Enter their email address, their username, and if they included it, their website. That will automatically send them to moderation so that their comments do not appear on the blog. Do note though that if they are determined, they can use a different email address or username to get around that. Also, do not put their IP address in the blacklist. IP addresses are no longer unique, and you might end up blocking legitimate visitors. Also, all they would have to do is go to a wi-fi hot spot, or connect via a different ISP and they could get around that.

One other thing I would suggest is to set your blog so that first time commenters are held in moderation till approved, then from that point forward they will not need approval. (settings > discussion). The next step on that of course is to set it so that all comments are held in moderation until approved. That way you are in control, and they might just get tired and go elsewhere after a while.

Okay. Just wanted to know the answer. So to be clear:

There is no way to remove someone who is a WordPress.com subscriber. The end.

That is correct. As Markel (staff) says in the post that @airodyssey references, if you delete them they could just subscribe again. Even if the system remembered that, all they would have to do is create another username/account with a different email address and then subscribe from there.

Use the blacklist and first-time commenter moderation (or a step further and go for full moderation) and after a while they will get the message and go away most likely.

WOW! I had not realized that at all and I’m grateful to have learned it.

Thanks so much for asking this question. I will now bookmark this thread so I have the correct answer the ext time it is asked.

P.S. I moderate every comment and I think ALL TSP’s advice is good advice,. However, some trolls are cunning enough to leave a decent comment the first time and which is approved then they start up and their spam gets autoposted. I experienced 3 cunning trolls and they are why I why I switched to moderating all comments.
