Am I tagging wrong?
-
I was clicking around in the tags tonight, and noticed that my own posts are not showing up on the tag pages. I searched before adding this query in the forums, and found this question from someone else who had this problem. (https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic.php?id=10567&page&replies=8)The issue for them was with pre-programmed posts. I understand how that would happen. This isn’t what’s happening with me. To test it out for sure, I created this (http://fracas.wordpress.com/2008/01/03/my-letterman-secret/) post (and I’m only putting the url here for example not to draw readers) and tagged it with a few tags including “entertainment” and “humor” so that I could go check. In checking the tag pages for both of those, I find that my post is not on either.
Am I doing something wrong. Earlier, I’d thought it might be because I used categories and tags (using the categories for the broad topic and the tags for the more specific terms related to the post) so this time used only tags to be able to look up the tag pages.
If anyone can tell me what I’ve done wrong, I’d really appreciate it. I hate to be a support pest and I’d emailed support yesterday with a different issue so I’d be thrilled to figure this one out without making them think I think my blog is the only one out there that matters. ;-)

There was some sort of downtime tonight where it seemed that all of wordpress, except for the FAQ page was down for about an hour. I don’t know if it was maintenance, upgrades, or some sort of failure. I would give it till tomorrow morning and see if it straightens out.
The other thing to do is open the latest post and don’t change anything, but click save to resave it and see if that will make it show up. That was a solution for the “scheduled” posts problems some were experiencing.

Ok, I’ll be patient and check it out in the morning. I’ll try the saving over again thing too.
I’m also wondering if I just simply use too many tags and categories. I’ve been reading and it seems that can affect your results too. I guess less is more?
Thanks! It sure is nice to always find some helpful soul in here.

That’s a good point. Too many tags can cause problems. I don’t know what the actual limit is but it seems if you get over about 15 you don’t make it onto the tags pages and categories and tags are combined so you have to keep the total down.
You’re welcome. I’m just about done for the evening but I expect someone will look in on the forum. Someone always does.

Ok, I counted and that sample post has (combined) 13 tags. So that’s not it. I just went in and re-saved it to try that out and then checked four of the tags randomly to see if my post appeared on the page, and it didn’t.
I shall now take your advice and wait for morning and more opinions and advice.
I will however, be making a gleaning of my old categories an item on my to-do list, and I will definitely be choosing more carefully so as to use less in the future.
Have a great night! Thanks again.

Removed enough so I had nine tags and the default category… so totalling 10. Clicked Save again and went to check out three of those tags to see if it showed up. It didn’t.. and I did remember to scroll to the appropriate number of minutes ago that I created the post just in case. Still nothing.

Check again in the morning. I think sometimes there is a lag on some of the more popular tags. If they aren’t there in the morning, perhaps someone else will have an idea, or you can contact support. I did notice tonight that some of the tags pages are out of order and the posts listed are not in chronological order as they typically are. Again, that could be related to whatever happened earlier with the downtime.

Ok.. I will. Now, weren’t you trying to get out of here? I’ll stop answering you if you stop trying to help me. ;-)

Marking this resolved because Mark is a total god and has fixed whatever was causing it. I think I owe <I>him</I> a steak dinner after all the support help he’s given me the last few days.
