Am I understanding this correctly? (theme related)

The only thread I found that was remotely similar to my question was this one: https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/want-to-change-a-theme-for-another?replies=3#post-75070 and it didnt answer my question properly, so I’m posting for help.

I just moved from Blogger to WordPress, as I was told WordPress had much better customisation features. I chose a theme from the list of (rather limited) free ones but I’d like to tweak one or two things (like making it centered, customising width, etc). I cannot find where to do this?? The theme specified it was customisable in regards to width (ie not a fixed width theme). I dont want to go wild and redo the whole thing or start from scratch, but just rather personalise my blog, my little space on the internet.

The only place I can remotely think of is “Edit CSS” but then I have to pay to be able to save changes?? I’m currently in a country with a very poor exchange rate, so for a blog its too expensive for me to consider, does this mean I’m stuck with not being able to customise my own page unless I host my own domain??? :( If so, I’m sorely disappointed as at least with Blogger you could choose your own theme colours, your own placement choice of your widgets, etc, even though you couldnt have intricate themes, per say.

I’d love to stay with WordPress, so I really hope I’m just missing something and being silly. Please help :(

It sounds as though you would need the CSS upgrade to do what you want here at WordPress.com. As you know, you can self-host WordPress, but that brings its own expenses.

That sucks!! Looks like I’ll be staying at Blogger then :/ Pity, because WP looked like it had such great potential. Thanks for the response.

Oh, yea and needless to say, self-hosting costs are worse than CSS upgrade costs so its a no-go for me as well :( *sigh*

What you heard was right, but they were talking about WordPress.ORG, not WordPress.COM. There isn’t any other way around this: you must either purchase the upgrade OR seek self-hosting if you want to go with WP. There are lots of advantages to WP.com over Blogger, but customization isn’t one.

That’s a separate cost. The domain is to change the url. What you want is the CSS upgrade which is a different separate expense. I’m waiting when we can place ads and pay for that upgrade.

    *crosses fingers*

Thanks guys, I’m aware of all costs (see my reply above this one), and all are out of my price range unfortunately. No matter, I’ll be sticking with Blogger.

Thanks for all the help and this thread may be locked now if necessary. Cheers!

PS: raincoaster, looks like andrews post appeared twice, so my double post must definately be an error on WP’s side.
