Am I using Jetpack correctly?

  • Unknown's avatar

I installed jetpack, but don’t know if I’m using it correctly. When I see “My Blogs” it shows two separate blogs. Am I losing reaches, visits and potential customers because I am being divided? What ways can I manage them to work together, or should I be looking to get rid of one of them? Thanks! TrainWithMarc.com (Marc Pelerin)

  • Hi,

The site you have at http://trainwithmarc.com/ is using WordPress.com and it shown in your my-blogs list as trainwithmarc.wordpress.com .

It sounds like you might have a second hosting account somewhere that you’re using WordPress.org (the self-hosted software that you can use on your own server), which can use Jetpack. This account doesn’t appear to be active or reaching folks currently since your domain is pointing to your WordPress.com site.

Does that bring any clarify or just muck things up more? :-)

Not going to lie, it’s making my head spin a bit. Should I/can I get rid of the Jetpack using site? I want to streamline everything because I feel like I’m spinning and not going anywhere.

    Thanks for your help.

    Marc

  • Since you have Jetpack somewhere, you have two sites.

They’re listed on your account as

    • trainwithmarc.wordpress.com
    • trainwithmarc.com

Since the domain http://trainwithmarc.com/ is actually pointing to trainwithmarc.wordpress.com, the Jetpack-using site seemingly isn’t accessible. I can remove it from your list of sites.

My concern for you, though, is you’re likely paying for hosting service somewhere that you may not need.

As it stands now, the only place you need to edit or change things on your site is http://trainwithmarc.wordpress.com/wp-admin/ or directly at http://wordpress.com

You should only be paying for a domain elsewhere (typically $15, give or take, a year) and the $13/yr domain mapping being paid to WordPress.com for what it appears you’re using now.

In either case, nothing is going to break or not work if you leave everything as it is and continue to edit your site with WordPress.com.

    Cheers!

I wouldn’t mind getting rid of it if it wasn’t going to muddle things up. How would you suggest I do this?

You’re right though, I think I am paying more than I have to – through godaddy. I’ll have to sort through that asap.

    Thanks!

    Hi there,

Since you’re using your domain trainwithmarc.com with your site here at WordPress.com, it won’t do any harm to that site if we remove the extra Jetpack-linked site from your account. We can remove that for you — just let us know if you’d like us to go ahead and do that. :)

You can also cancel any hosting you’re paying GoDaddy for that site and it won’t mess up your live site at http://trainwithmarc.com/ since that’s hosted here at WordPress.com. GoDaddy can give you more details about what exactly you’re paying for with them. Just be sure not to cancel your domain registration for trainwithmarc.com — that’s separate from GoDaddy’s website hosting, and you need the domain registration to keep using that domain with your site here.

Please let us know if you have any other questions about that!

You guys are great. Thanks so much for the help. I cancelled my godaddy web hosting – and I’m going to take the advice of kraftbj and keep my jetpack (because it does no harm).

    Thanks so much!!

    Marc
