Amazon link

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi,

We run a non-commercial theatre for the local community and I’ve been trying to add an HTML link to Amazon. Every time I paste the code, it disappears when uploading.

Granted this is an affiliate link which I appreciate WordPress.com would not normally allow but from reading the FAQ section it would seem Amazon is an exception. Could you help?

    Many thanks,
    PS

I should mention that the FAQ link on Affiliates I refer to is:

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/affiliate-links/

There are exceptions to this policy. Amazon.com and other select affiliate links are permitted so long as they are not the primary content of the blog in question. I simply want to have a small Amazon banner as a Sidebar widget and it would in no way be the primary content of the blog.

Everyone with a suspended blog makes the same argument – the only exceptions I have seen have been for very limited use such as a book review on a site that is about books – hanging a “shop at our affiliate site to support us” will sooner or later probably have you doing battle with the Terms of Service group over your suspension – –

personally I would not do any affiliate links no matter what exception I thought I saw in the TOS

How would I get someone to specifically review this?

I flagged this for staff attention but don’t get your hopes up. I’ve got something like 4600 posts here and maybe 50 Amazon links. They overlook that kind of ratio. More? Who knows?

Also, I know the Amazon widget code, and all of it will be stripped for security reasons. You will never be able to have a regular Amazon widget in your sidebar here.

    Ok, understand.

Out of curiosity, when you say the code “will be stripped out for security reasons”, how does this affect the remaining code? Does it still look/function the same?

  • If the code you’re trying to embed includes JavaScript, an iframe or certain other types of code, it will be stripped out. Please paste the code into a Pastebin so I can have a look:

You can learn more here about the types of code that are permitted:

    Add Code to Your Site

Amazon does supply plain-text links that should work.

Pasted for you, titled “Amazon link for WordPress.com blog”.

  • Hi there – please provide a link to your pastebin so I can take a look – thanks.

    ^^ This should be it:

Used the title she posted above and entered it in the search box on the pastebin site.

    And Yes, it includes iFrame.

  • As I mentioned above, iframe code cannot be pasted into WordPress.com posts, pages, or widgets. Try obtaining a plain-text link from the affiliate-code generator instead. Plain HTML links (anchor tag) and plain tracking images (img tag) should be fine. Feel free to post again if you’d like me to take another look at the new code.

ONLY the text link for Amazon items works. I’ve tried it. No widget code at all works here.
