  the installation instructions for the amazon plug in (https://wordpress.org/plugins/amazon-link/installation/) don’t seem correct, at least on my free wordpress page. how do i get this installed?

  Third party plugins don’t work here on WordPress.COM.

  That site you’ve linked is only referring to self-hosted sites through WordPress.ORG.

  Perhaps you could use Amazon affiliate links, which are allowed on WordPress.COM (though not explicitly mentioned in this link):
