Amazon widgets

Evidently it’s impossible for me to use Amazon widgets on my new website. Is it okay to insert a picture of the Amazon logo with a link to Amazon?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

No – that is considered an ad and your site will be suspended.
You can use a limited Amazon link if it fits with the Post – say a book review with a link

I read a couple of forum entries that mentioned WordPress.org as an alternative. But then who do I get to do all the behind-the-scenes stuff that WordPress.com is doing for me? I’m very new to this and don’t understand why I can’t be an Amazon affiliate.

You can pay someone to do that; estimate $65 an hour and up.
WordPress.com is a turnkey blogging system, not a platform to facilitate monetization. If you just want to blog, blog here. If you want to make money via advertising, well, let me destroy your dreams, because the bottom has dropped out of the market. It will generally cost in the realm of $200 to independently host a WordPress.org blog for a year, including purchasing a theme. Then you have to either hire someone for tech support or do it all yourself.

PS – you need quite a bit of traffic to break even – I have seen the number 1,000 page views / day mentioned several times – reality is that without traffic nothing works and the income stream will be pizza or hobby income

As both of you have, no doubt, already noticed, I’m very new to all this. I appreciate the info and advice. Cheers!

You be welcome & good luck
part of The secret is to have fun – blog a bit see how you like it – some people start blogs because friends told them they needed to have one – most of those get neglected – I have some friends that use a blog to keep in touch with friends – others have something to say in some area and need the outlet
