AMP representation of blog truncating article

  • Unknown's avatar

    Using the Chronicle theme.

I’ve discovered an issue where the AMP representation of one of my blog posts is truncating the article, specifically near the end after the last set of images.

Normally (desktop) it looks like this :

Lohagadwadi Caves – Newly discovered inscription sheds light on early Jain faith in Maharashtra

But note how the AMP version is missing the closing text, credits etc :

This may be happening for a lot of my blog posts, I have to confess to not paying that much attention to the AMP rendition but happened to stumble across this in passing.

Is there anything specific about the text that follows the last set of images that may have caused this to occur ?

    Thanks,
    Kevin.

  • Hi there,

I’ve taken a close look at your post and nothing about it jumped out at me as unusual. But I did note that the images (the gallery of two images) seems to be the source of the problem somehow. I tried on a test site and if I move the gallery block to a different part of the post, there is no AMP output after that point. Only the first image shows but the second image and any text after that is hidden in the AMP version.

Again, I did not see anything odd in the editor code for that block so I’m scratching my head a bit. If you delete these two images and then re-add them (so they have the same look as what you deleted) does this clear up the issue?

It’s my hope that setting that gallery block up again from scratch will help, but if not please let us know so we can take a closer look!

    Thanks for your reply.

I have tried deleting that block and adding a the two images again as a gallery, and the exact same behaviour is occurring. I also tried the images in a different order, and changing the gallery columns to 1 instead of 2, it made no difference.

I then tried removing the gallery block entirely, which has resulted in my post being truncated even more (earlier!) Not sure if any caching is occurring, as re-adding the gallery doesn’t make any difference. My blog post seems to be even more truncated now than before trying the experiments.

So the plot thickens, and is worse.

If you’re still having this problem, please take a screenshot of the behavior in question. If you’re not familiar on how to take a screenshot, this support document will help explain how to make one:

    Take a Screenshot

Then, upload the screenshots to your media library or use a service like Snipboard.io to upload the screenshot and then share the image link from that service here and we’ll take a closer look.

Also: let us know what operating system and browser (and versions of each) your using.

    Thanks!

Why am I having to supply screenshots when I have already provided links that clearly demonstrate the problem, and continue to do so ??

The browser and os appear to be irrelevant in my tests.

  • I am able to see the issue as well, and it seems specific to AMP pages only (regardless of browser) but the issue is that we have trouble testing this because we can’t edit your blog posts to see how they change. Because of that screenshots are definitely helpful, thanks

You mentioned this which I found interesting:

I then tried removing the gallery block entirely, which has resulted in my post being truncated even more (earlier!)

Can you take a screenshot of where it ended up truncating after that edit? It seems that there is an issue with the gallery block on amp pages, and I noticed that many of your “two image galleries” show only one image if you view the AMP version.

When you edit the post, does the cut-off jump to another gallery perhaps? I’d be curious to see if the cutoff always happens after a gallery or not.

Also I should point out that AMP is optional and you can turn it off if you wish https://wordpress.com/settings/performance

    Thanks for the additional info!

I’ve managed to get to the root cause of this issue and fix it. In a former life I was a director of software quality, so couldn’t resist dusting off the troubleshooting skills one more time.

Much earlier on in my blog, nowhere near where the truncation was occurring, I had inserted an Gallery Bock that consisted of just a single image. If I changed that to an Image Block instead, it renders perfectly in AMP. I can now switch between the two block types and get the truncation/non-truncation to occur in a predictable fashion lower down the article.

I have no idea why changing a block type higher up the article would cause the truncation lower down, so it must be a bug of some description but at least there’s a workaround and others may find this observation and “fix” useful.

    Best wishes,
    Kevin.
