Ampersand theme link to portfolio

Hello,
I have the theme Ampersand, and I am trying to get the same result as in the example http://themes.array.is/browse/?theme=ampersand
I would like to access different portfolio by clicking on the pictures on the main page. It is not a problem if the picture is not inside of the gallery, but then I don’t get the carousel effect.
So the idea is that I have the gallery on the main page, and three of the pictures (and at the same time links to the corresponding portfolio) are displayed.
Do you have any ideas?thank you a lot and kind regards!

This is the WordPress.COM support forum. You need to post to the WordPress.ORG support forum for help with your site because it is not hosted by WordPress.COM.WordPress.com and WordPress.org are completely separate and have different logins and also run some different version of themes with the same names http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/
