An Alliance of WordPress Users

    Hey everyone!
I was thinking of disseminating information on some tourist destinations around the world. Providing readers with first hand views about some countries and or places to be specific so that the readers can make a rational choice would be the aim of the group.

I know many of wordpress users are from outside USA and would love to share their hometown experiences so that others could learn more about those places and possibly adjust their travel plans to see your small cottage in the woods of Africa, or the haven in the middle of temples in Nepal.

So, is anybody interested to form an alliance of wordpress users so that collectively we can help each other out by providing unbiased information?

As a start, I have tried to provide some information about Nepal, the sweet country sandwiched between giants India and China. If you folks are interested in running wordpress blogs related to travel, write down here and lets see what wordpress bloggers can do.

Kewl idea…but the marketing part of me: thinks it would be better linked to a few other things…like an established home-swap business, affiliate ads…others…it’s too much work, for me, to start another blog without it generating income.

    Poppy8sd,
I wanted to do this just out of pure charity. Come on wordpress users, lets help each other out. I am thinking of making a Eurotrip next year and I want to explore a real Europe than just flying to Paris and London, getting high in Amsterdam and walking past the ancient monuments in Florence. Some of you might be thinking of exploring the Corals in Australia while some might want to explore the abominable snowman “yeti” in Nepal. We can find the best places to explore and hence optimize our satisfaction.

I have uploaded a couple of pics of Mt. Everest, the top of the world and Yeti, none has seen it for real as yet. I hope you will like it.

    @dreamnepal
I’m going to say this to you very respectfully and I hope you will accept it in that way too. This is a support forum for troubleshooting and for learning how to use wordpress blog technology. It isn’t a forum for “chatting” and the subject matter you’re discussing is actually “chat”.
Would you please establish a blog post and speak to each other as well as anyone else who may be interested about this *non support* issue on your blog?
Thanks, in advance, for your understanding and co-operation.

Thanks for your advice timethief. I wish we had some place to post ideas like this one other than my site itself. Not all people would visit my site and hence would not be interested in this idea.

Any ideas as to how I can draw the attention of all?

  • Unknown's avatar

What if staff just moves it to the Ideas Forum rather than Support? It’s WordPress-related and concerns the whole community, even if it’s not technical. Besides, Ideas is thin and could use some action.

  • Unknown's avatar

Maybe I’ll kust nudge this in before the thread is closed. Is this alliance restricted to only tourism, I’m mainly a tech and harry potter blog. I’d like to be an alliance that helps and links to each other in articles.

  • Unknown's avatar

I am sorry guys,I was confused about the category at the beginning.

    Felcon,
We can talk about it…However, I intended this to be mainly a travel guide rather than promoting other stuff.

So, does anyone have the interest to jump into this alliance? We can create a new wordpress site and all of us can be authors with one admin though…

dreamnepa – you can have the discussion here, although it’s fairly new and doesn’t have a lot of people yet.

    dailygrumble,
I have opened a new blog entitled
    http://worldtravelguide.wordpress.com

I have added you as a contributor now. We will define the roles later on. I have also added some information about Nepal. However, it is not complete.

In the meantime, I would like to invite you to offer one article so that we can promote it.

If anyone else is interested in the project, I welcome one and all.

    Thanks.

  • Unknown's avatar

Ok, great. Do you have an email address I can contact you by?

Note- Guys, I realise this isn’t a forum for chatting like this, but I couldn’t think of any other way of contacting dreamnepal.

  • Unknown's avatar

shoot me an email at (email visible only to moderators and staff)

..yea sorry to other guys!!!but I still invite others to join us.

  • Unknown's avatar

Since I moved the discussion to Ideas, I don’t see a problem with this “chat” ;-)

  • Unknown's avatar

Oh boy .. the door is being opened on the ideas forum to chat on a subject I know something about namely, third world tourism greenwashing so here we go.

Welcome to the land of Everest!!! Nepal is one of the few countries you wouldn’t want to miss out in this life.

Really, then did you know that Sir Edmund Hillary, Sir David Attenborough and Sir Chris Bonington and Friends of Earth have been campaigning for some time now for the UN to put Everest on their World Heritage in Danger List due to climate change, which they say is melting Everest?

A fellow environmental blogger http://vincenze.com/?p=154 has an excellent article on this campaign and a google video to view too. Check out his blog and learn why the UN has not yet put Everest on the list and why environmental groups are really ticked off about the whole thing.

Here’s the link for the World Heritage in Danger list http://whc.unesco.org/pg.cfm?cid=86

It appears that the cultural heritage of the Kathmandu Valley is illustrated by seven groups of monuments and buildings which display the full range of historic and artistic achievements for which the Kathmandu Valley is world famous. The seven include the Durbar Squares of Hanuman Dhoka (Kathmandu), Patan and Bhaktapur, the Buddhist stupas of Swayambhu and Bauddhanath, and the Hindu temples of Pashupati and Changu Narayan.

Threats to the Site: The exceptional architectural design of Kathmandu, Patan and Bhaktapur is gradually disappearing due to uncontrolled urban development. http://whc.unesco.org/en/list/121

Tourism Stripping Everest’s Forests Bare National Geographic http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2003/08/0829_030829_travelereverest.html
The Khumbu has already reached its saturation point in terms of the number of trekkers it can take,” says P. T. Sherpa, director of KEEP, the Kathmandu Environmental Education Project. “Trekkers are facing bottlenecks on eroding trails, crowded teahouses”—the Sherpa homes for overnight guests—”and litter from discarded water bottles and soda cans.”

But perhaps the biggest crisis is massive deforestation, as the growing numbers of trekkers generate demand for firewood and construction material. The only sign of the magnificent forests that once thrived here are a few trees on sanctified grounds at Buddhist monasteries—and the wide floorboards in older teahouses.

“Do tourists who come here consider what their need for hot water costs in terms of wood?” asks Gian Pietro Verza, field manager at an Italian environmental research station near one Sherpa village. “One trekker can consume an average of five times more wood per day than an entire Sherpa family uses—and the porters and guides they bring with them need firewood, too.”

One wonders what “good” can come from the founding of a wordpress.com alliance dedicated to the over-promotion and the “greenwashing” of these precious third world sites as tourist destination spots.

    Timethief,
Thanks for your comment. I have given my response in the site itself.Check it out…

  • Unknown's avatar

You’re welcome. I also reported the weirdness regarding the re-ordering of comments in the Thirteen theme here http://wordpress.com/forums/topic.php?id=4573&replies=1

  • Unknown's avatar

I changed the time-frame to match the comments in order. It should read well for now.

I think the main problem was that I set the time to EST in the middle of updating the site and it meant -4 hrs to the standard blog time. So, the comments posted later were timed 4 hrs earlier. It should not be a problem with the theme as long as it starts to work properly from tomorrow onwards.

  • Unknown's avatar

It did work all good now.

    Timethief,
Despite the poor performance in maintaining natural and cultural attractions, Kathmandu did seem to attract a lot of people.
Kathmandu was voted one of the best cities in Asia by a magazine called Travel and Leisure.

  • Unknown's avatar

Our converstaions have taken your blog from zero hits to 102 hits. The Kathmandu Environmental Education Project or KEEP aims to help minimize the negative influences of tourism by advocating and promoting “minimum impact trekking”, and through presentations and lectures to travellers and trekking industry professionals. These presentations sensitize visitors and Nepalese to issues of conservation and culture.

In the field, KEEP spreads its message to local Nepalese by offering training and courses on nature conservation, on basic and intermediate English for trekking guides and lodge owners, as well as first aid training, eco-trekking workshops, and courses on ecological thinking, Positive Impact Tourism, and regenerative handicraft skills, among others. Recently KEEP has become involved in programmes aimed at poverty alleviation and the empowerment of women.

There is also the work of Himalayan Kingdoms which is committed to responsible tourism, through its policies and practices which permeate all aspects of its business. The company’s policies aim to ensure that Himalayan Kingdoms and its clients act in a way which is socially, environmentally and culturally sound.

“We feel strongly that all our holidays should benefit the local communities, protect the environment by minimising pollution, and respect local traditions, religion and heritage. We tread lightly – low volume, low impact trekking/touring is the best way of preserving the beautiful and fragile places we visit.” http://www.himalayankingdoms.com/responsible_tourism_holidays.ihtml

Perhaps you’d like to feature the work of these organizations focused on responsible/sustainable on your blog in an article.

But I believe it’s past time for this thread to be brought to a close so I won’t be posting to it again. Best wishes. :)
