An applaud
-
I moved (back) from WP.org to WP.com.
In the course of 2020 the abuse/ hacking increased so much it forced me to
constantly watch the site. I had to buy premium licence for Wordfence so
I could block the worst cases ( countries, Ip’s) – and Wordfence watched realtime.
Almost every day there was a plugin or three which needed updating- and yes, like many others I experienced an update crashed the site, which again I had to pay my host a good deal to have it up and running again.
My site was up for 3-4 years, the traffic was good – but in the end I could not
take it anymore. Too much money, too much work and despair.
I do modest video editing, hoping my tips can give a few out there some inspiration to do more than what can be done on/with a phone.
But I could tell; if something was possible to steal – some stole.
I’m starting over. It will take some time before I see traffic, but I can start
my days without having to check my site before breakfast.Ok. So you don’t have as much “control” over a free or premium WP.com site ?
If you add up what you pay for hosting, a domain, a good theme, security – you are not far from a business plan on WP.com and you can use the plugins you want.I have read a bit on the support forum.
So many make a mistake between WP.org / WP.com
The forum here is great and I want to give applaud to staff and members for
the guidance, patience and help you give – more or less around the clock.Stay safe

Hi Nina! Thank you for the shout out and positive feedback! We don’t often get that in a tech support forum, so it’s really nice to hear. We’ll be sure to share it with the rest of the team and our ops folks.
Cheers!

And re: this:
I’m starting over. It will take some time before I see traffic, but I can start
my days without having to check my site before breakfast.I’d suggest just adding to what you got. It sounds like you’re doing great work, otherwise people wouldn’t be stealing it :)
For what it’s worth, we’ve got some tips on content theft here:
https://wordpress.com/support/prevent-content-theft/
One thing you might consider (totally up to you!) is telling your users they may use your ideas they give credit and agree to let others (including you!) share their variations on your ideas. WordPress itself is built on a model like that. Some people will just steal without crediting anyway, but by saying it outright like that, the people who simply hadn’t thought about giving credit for ideas may be nudged to do better.
Hoping that helps a bit!

Hello – thanks for replies!
Oh yes, I have learned to use “watermark” on videos!
If people now should want any download they have to send me a request –
still not have to pay for it, but at least I will have more control – I think/hope.
