An easy way to create a Table of Contents for WordPress.com
-
I was searching for an easy way to create a Table of Contents for WordPress.com, but couldn’t find one. So I’m adding a suggestion for that feature here. In the meantime, I use Evernote a lot and it does auto-generate these…so I’m going to give that a try and see if it helps to cut down the amount of time needed to make this from scratch.
I’m writing a couple of really long posts. :-)
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

I’m not entirely sure I understood what you are asking. Do you mean a table of contents for your site? If so, you can use a site map shortcode https://en.support.wordpress.com/sitemaps/shortcode/
If that isn’t what you mean, can you explain a bit more about that? Thanks

I mean a Table of Contents that would be auto-generated using maybe any line with the H1 code that I could place at the beginning of a very long post. I’m manually creating one right now. I’m going to make each of the entry’s ‘Jump’ links to the correct section.
Here’s an example

Ah, I see. Unfortunately, it isn’t currently possible to automatically create jump links as you describe it and within the WordPressdotcom environment, I am not certain it would be possible. But thank for suggesting it.

Yes, I would like to do that also, i.e., a ToC with links to each heading for a SINGLE long page and not necessarily for other pages.

Noted and tagged for Staff as a feature request.
Have you tried Google docs integration for this? It might be worth a try. https://en.blog.wordpress.com/2017/03/07/introducing-wordpress-com-for-google-docs-a-new-way-forward-for-collaborative-editing/

Good Morning –
I’ve noted the feature request internally. To be honest, I do not foresee this being added in the near-ish future.

-
Thanks I’ll check out the Google Docs plugin. I ran across this cool drop down menu embedded in a Wikipedia article the other day. It’s really more than I need…but cool!

Have you checked this out?

Good Morning –
Thank you anwmoment. When (and I can’t give a time estimate) this is looked at and the developers will see your requests here.
-
I don’t know if it is appropiate to do this, but I’d like to upvote this feature as well. For pages like FAQs or long articles it is very useful.

MacWorld UK’s recent Tablet Buying Guide has a nice example showing how useful TOC’s on pages are.http://www.macworld.co.uk/feature/ipad/best-ipad-buying-guide-2017-3463518/#toc-3463518-7

Hello –
This forum thread has been posted for the developers, so when they take a look all of your comments will be seen. It’s the perfect place to +1 a feature request.
-
I’ve noticed some support pages have TOC sections and they are soooo helpful. I also +1 that feature, too. :)
