An issue with featured images
-
For some reason, featured images are now showing on all my posts that contain photos, but when I go to edit post there are no featured images selected. This has only started happening within the last 12 hours or so.
The theme I’m using is Penscratch 2
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi,
This has only started happening within the last 12 hours or so.
Have you made any changes during that period at Customize? With the Penscratch 2 theme activated, where featured images are displayed may be modified at Customize > Content Options > Featured Images. A check in the box labeled “Automatically use first image in post” might be the culprit.

Nope, I hadn’t made any changes in customise but I see the “Automatically use first image in post” option. When I looked, the box was unchecked, so I placed a check mark in the box and clicked save & update. Then I unchecked the box and saved again. This seems to have fixed the glitch.
Many thanks

You’re welcome, @spicemadd.

I’ll tag the topic for staff attention, since obviously the steps you describe having taken to remove the featured image should not be necessary.

Hi there,
I see you figured it out.
We added a new content option in the Customizer last week that allows you to automatically set the first image in a post as featured image, specifically to make it simpler with grid-based themes that don’t really work without featured images.
This featured is turned off by default, but there has been a few cases like yours where the feature apparently activated itself. Enabling and again disabling it like you did should fix it.
If you want to learn more about this feature you can see here:
