  “Maintenance notice! We are going to need to take down WordPress.com for about an hour at midnight tonight to do some preventative maintenance. The upgrade will make some of the global databases much faster.”

  Congrats! I’m happy you “took my idea” (well, almost) and put a notice on the dashboard. This is MUCH better than coming online and finding everything gone and away.

  People tend to react negatively when that happens. Me included.

  Well, except Matt & Co SHOULD say midnight PST. It is half an hour to midnight where I am now, and I doubt that the site will go down in half an hour. ;)

  I was wondering about that as well. You forget though. Most of WP staff are in California and we all know how they think the world revolves around LA. :)

  Just to clarify, it’s midnight United States West Coast time.

  Must be something important for it to occur on a Friday night. I know that this is when my servers’ traffic is usually at their heaviest.

  The time should be a link to a site which tells you the time it’ll happen everywhere in the world.

  When I opened my dashboard Thursday afternoon: saw message of shut-down. I don’t care
  WHY, don’t care how brief/long. I want you to know: I appreciated that message more than I can convey. BLOGGER shuts down without notice; doesn’t explain ANYTHING, reacts to problems; leaves Thousands in ignorance, frustration; eventually: anger. Thank you for the consideration, respect.

  Poppy, it’s how the forum theme is designed. The CSS sets a set width for that column and doesn’t allow it to expand. That way the layout of the forum doesn’t get messed up.

  I was actually looking at the page that Matt mentioned and trying to figure out how midnight GMT meant that it was 3AM in Washington DC myself…

  But just having the notice was a plus. I even slept through the upgrade. :)
