Announcing WordPress blog post to LinkedIn groups
-
In addition to the blog I just started on WordPress, I blog for the IIA on their site. They have a widget or device that lets you post to your LinkedIn groups (http://www.linkedin.com/shareArticle?mini=true&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.theiia.org%2Fblogs%2Fmarks%2Findex.cfm%2Fpost%2FWhat%2520is&title=What%20is%20%22Risk-based%22%20Auditing%3F%20-%20Marks%20on%20Governance&source=www.theiia.org&summary=What is).
It gives you a list of your LinkedIn groups, and then you select which ones you want to receive an announcement that you have posted a blog entry.
Is there a way to do this with a WordPress blog post? The only widgets/tools I have seen just post to your profile.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

We’d need the URL of the blog you’re talking about, starting with http, in order to help.

The URL of my WordPress blog is http://normanmarks.wordpress.com/. The other is http://www.theiia.org/blogs/marks.
Thanks in advance!

Yes Jan – though it doesn’t seem to be as quick as the shortcut version Norman is talking about above. I just go into each of my LinkedIn groups in turn (well, just the ones I want to post my blog to), click on Start a New Discussion, put the heading of my latest blog in as the Discussion Heading, then a very short line plus the link in the discussion box. Then submit. It’s ideal to do this on a Friday morning, as most of my groups seem to send out their weekly update on a Friday afternoon, and I’ve noticed my blog is often the top one in their updates! http://tamaraessex.wordpress.com http://www.linkedin.com/in/tamaraessex

Tama,
Oh, I just found your reply! Thanks.
So it is just a cut and paste process? Not a feature like the one described by nmarks above?

I don’t use that, nor would I. The Discussion feature isn’t the same as a blog import feature. I use the BlogLink app by Typepad, which even works with WordPress.com
-
raincoaster,
How does that work? How do I get BlogLink and then use it with WordPress?

Under Settings->Privacy Settings->Authorized Apps, you’ll be able to add some new apps. Here is the BlogLink app:

raincoaster,
Should I remove the WordPress app from my LinkedIn profile if I plan to use the BlogLink app? Do they do the same thing?
How does BlogLink allow me to post to certain groups? I read about the app on LinkedIn (the link you gave me), but it doesn’t give much information.

It allows you to post it to your Profile. I, personally, HATE when people force their blog on all group members every time they update, so I don’t know any apps that do that.
-
raincoaster,
I agree, but I thought nmarks (above) was talking about an option … when you create a post that you think a LinkedIn Group would be interested in, that you have an option to quick-post it to the group.
Thanks for your help.

Copy this code as a bookmark in your browser (without the ` characters):
javascript:d=document;c=d.createElement('script');c.src='http://www.linkedin.com/js/bookmarklet_share.js';d.body.appendChild(c);void(0);Now, go to the blog page you wish to post to LinkedIn Groups (usually you need to click the title to get to the URL for the actual post; from your home page it will capture that instead).
Click the bookmark, and it will populate the necessary fields and bring up the list of your groups, as you described.
This can be found on the LinkedIn site as well, as the Share Bookmarklet.

Clarification to my comment above (since this is my first time listing code here):
You can ignore the parenthetical note about the characters to skip, since apparently the effect of them is to create code without them!
