Annoying automation
-
I have two very long inventory pages on my blog, one with my CD collection and one with a list of ratings for over 4,000 films. They are very slow to edit, and a lot of the new automation creates a lot of problems to me in terms of hurry up and wait because there is usually a huge delay between when I type something and when it appears. I do a lot of the work to add new inventory in a word processing program and paste it, but when I make improvements to what’s already there, I edit within the document, and it often takes aggravatingly long, often well over five minutes to replace a single typo. The other day it was working so smoothly that I thought perhaps part of the page had been lost. One of the worst aspects is the constant autosaving, which screws up my html tags
With my music collection, I include a lot of links to jump from an artist who guests on an album to the list of albums I have by that artist, which involves the a href tag. Because speed is such an issue, I often type an open tag, wait for it to appear, an autosave happens, and multiple opening and closing tags are then added that then have to be deleted, and the closing tag placed where I want it, all before the next autosave.
I temporary solution I found was to do the closing tag first, then do the opening tag, This solution isn’t working today. I keep adding /a in angle brackets, and it keeps not appearing. In one case this morning, I’ve done it six times, but I’ve never seen it appear. I think the autosave is erasing it before it appears. This is extremely annoying and wastes a lot of time on a page that’s already so slow that I’ve disturbed my next door neighbor a number of times when the problems become too enraging. Since it’s a document that I primarily use with Ctrl-F, I definitely do not want to break it into multiple documents.
Can I turn off the autosave, the automatic HTML, or anything to stop having this problem?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi @scottandrewhutchins, if you’re having trouble editing the page, chances are others are having trouble loading it up, too, so if possible I’d recommend breaking it up until smaller chunks.
Also if you’ll send a link to the affected page, we’ll take a look.
-
It’s not having an issue loading, only editing, and I made extremely clear why I do not want it in smaller chunks.
Today I bought Criminal Law (1988) by Jerry Goldsmith. I kept trying to make a line break, and instead, it wanted to jump down to Mr. Baseball. It kept doing it over and over and over again, unwilling to make the line break. I had to put the cursor on the next line, do a Ctrl-V, then enter to get it because of automated nonsense that automatically deletes such line breaks.

Any particular reason why you’re not adding the links directly from the editor settings? That would be faster than writing HTML:
I kept trying to make a line break, and instead, it wanted to jump down to Mr. Baseball. It kept doing it over and over and over again, unwilling to make the line break.
How exactly were you trying to add that line break? Are you suing blocks for that, or, again, are you adding pieces of HTML?
Can I turn off the autosave, the automatic HTML, or anything to stop having this problem?
I’m afraid it’s not possible to turn off auto-save, but if you prefer to create your posts in HTML directly, you may try to use the Custom HTML block:

Like I said, I am really annoyed by the new version of WordPress altogether.
One reason I edit in HTML mode is because it creates a bunch of stupid spaces I don’t want.
I think the WordPress site itself must be ridiculously slow, because I’m having speed issues replying on this board that I don’t normally encounter on other sites.
At the moment, I’m trying to delete a ton of automated HREF tags, but it seems to give me two seconds to highlight and delete before it autosaves again and respawns. I’m constantly waiting on the autosave now, during which it won’t let me do anything.
I’m even having difficulty getting to the part I want to edit now. It likes to jump to near the top or near the bottom of the document, or act like the scroll button is continuing to be hit when it isn’t. These problems are completely unique to the WordPress site as far as I can tell.
I can’t even show you the exact problem I’m having because Ctrl-C isn’t working. I’m trapped in a position where I can’t save my numerous changes because autosave won’t let me delete its autogenerated errors. This site needs to change its name to Sisyphus. The HREF tag is closed, so I now don’t even understand the autogeneration garbage. When It was left open, it at least made a modicum of baad sense.

Could someone please explain why hitting the down arrow button on the scroll bar means “go most of the way to the top?” I’ve attempted to record my screen just so I can show how badly things are going, but that, too, resulted in error messages.
It’s as though I have a virus that affects only WordPress. I’ve attempted to take some screenshots to show the problem, but I can’t upload them here, so that seems rather pointless. Doing that has been fairly challenging because any time I get close to the problem, it jumps to the beginning or end of the document before I can get it in frame.

There are several ways to share a screenshot in this forum, https://wordpress.com/support/make-a-screenshot/#sharing-your-screenshot

Hello,
Looking at your site I think you have over 90,000 words on the music collection page. One thing you could look at is automatic spell checking to see if you can disable that in the browser as it may be taking a lot of resources. As an example in Chrome, you right-click in the text edit box and, under Spelling, you can uncheck either basic or enhanced spell checking. This can also be done in Settings/Languages. Also, plugins (if you have one) like Grammarly may be affecting the browser due to the number of words on the page.

I tried. It looks like WordPress’s defaults got in my way again.

Hello there,
Many thanks for putting that detailed post there explaining the issue.
Just to double check what’s happening here, and to be absolutely clear, you’re seeing an issue whereby you’re copying a line of text, and then pasting, but that paste appears at the bottom of the document, instead of where you’re putting the curser? Is that correct?
If yes, I can see why that would be annoying.
Can you tell me what browser is in use please?
I notice you’re editing in HTML, is there a reason for that?
Lastly, do you have any ad blockers running on your browser?
Many thanks in advance.

That’s one of several issues that may be related. This all started with the tag that won’t stop autospawning for reasons I can’t fathom apart from there being a typo in the name quotes because the HTML looks right.
I am using Chrome.
As stated above, when I edit my large inventory pages with the regular editor, a lot of unnecessary spacing gets introduced in parts of the document that I’m not even working on at the time.
I’m not aware of any installed ad blockers, but the search isn’t being very helpful because it wants to search on the web rather than my hard drive.

I don’t think I can do anything until I can stop those href tags from multiplying. Nothing stays in the same place long enough to highlight or paste anything.
-
The page has become absolutely impenetrable. Any time I make an edit, it goes straight to the bottom of the screen, but it still won’t delete the > at the end. It’s extremely difficult to navigate the document. When I get close and start scrolling with the arrow buttons, it usually jumps to the beginning or the end when I’m almost there. Even when I succeed, no amount of editing is taking effect unless it’s at the bottom of the page. Something is seriously wrong here unless WordPress has a maximum length on pages, and no one has said that.

In the past, we’ve seen things like this injected by faulty browser extensions or even malware.
First, please make sure that your browser is up to date: https://browsehappy.com/
If it is not, please try updating your browser or switching to a different browser.
If it is, please do these two things:
1. Try clearing your browser’s cache and cookies.
2. Try with all browser extensions or add-ons temporarily disabled.
Please let us know how each step goes for you, and which browser (and version of) you’re using if you’re still having trouble.
-
I updated the browser and disabled all the extensions. The only thing I was able to do was delete the extra > at the bottom. I tried to highlight the undesired i and delete it, but it highlighted the whole word, so I retyped it. It appeared at the very bottom of the page, and all Ctrl-Z did was take the h of Goldsmith.
Clearing the cache and cookies is a problem because it means undoing all of my login/passwords, which also makes using a different browser difficult.
I am using Chrome Version 88.0.4324.182 (Official Build) (64-bit).

OK. I’m not able to duplicate this exact issue in current chrome on a mac, however my macbook pro (~18 months old) is definitely straining with that much content (sounds like it’s ready for lift off).
Is this a new problem that just got bad recently, or has it become more sluggish over time?
Also, if you’re proficient in HTML, have you considered storing a local copy and editing it VIM or Nano, or something designed to handle large/long files like that? You could copy the existing code, paste to a local file, edit that, and paste back. It’s a clunky process, but that could make going to the correct line and what not a lot easier, too, and let your computer rest.
Lastly, for what it’s worth, I ran a quick test on the page itself: the average time it took for a browser to “paint” the page was about 12 seconds. I’m not sure it would load at all on some mobile phones. If you change your mind about breaking it down into an index page and sub pages, for example, and need some help with that, let us know.

I checked your webpage through https://www.browserstack.com/speedlab and you get a very low score a your webpage takes ‘ages’ to load. My mobile browser (Chrome on Android) hangs up as your webpage takes to mucht time to load.
I think it would be a good idea to reorganize your content in a more userfriendly way. You’ll get more visitors and it will be easier for you to edit your content. -
This page is mainly for my own use, as I doubt most people will care unless I get big. It’s been sluggish for a while, but it’s only become uneditable since I was up late this past Saturday into Sunday.
-
It doesn’t load slowly just to read it on my laptop, and it’s not too bad on my welfare phone, either.
