Annoying WP Tip “master your own domain”

  • Unknown's avatar

A WP Tip showed up yesterday suggesting that I become the master of my own domain with suggested domain names (names that are so far off base in relation to my blog it’s ridiculous). Typically when a WP tip shows up, clicking on it will make it go away. This one persists and I am finding it annoying. There was a topic here on the forums yesterday about it, but I can’t find that now. I also emailed support, but have heard nothing. There was a staff response on yesterday’s discussion that it would “disappear soon”, but it’s still showing up. Somebody get rid of this dreadful “feature”. Thank you.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

There’s no need to post to more than one thread. The other one is still here:

Adding to existing threads makes them longer and longer threads get more attention.

Sorry I can’t help you there: I’m not seeing it. Have you cleared your cache and cookies, restarted your browser?

i’m sorry raincoaster, i had looked for the other thread and couldn’t find it, so i just posted again. please excuse me.

I’m thinking pretty much all of WordPress is cookie-based. If you clear your cookies, you might see it again. Some browsers are configured to clear cookies every time you close the browser. That might be it.

i have done everything to “clear” the wordpress tip from my dashboard, but there it still is and still no response from support.

  • Unknown's avatar

No, what I’m saying is, you want to do the exact opposite. If you click on the darn thing it gives your computer a cookie…as long as the computer has that, you shouldn’t see the thing again, if it’s working the way the notifications used to. But you need to click on it.

So try that: click on it, then poke around and don’t clear your cookies. See if that prevents it from coming back.

Hmm. Just the opposite of the usual cookie dance solution!
    ;-)

They are irritating, in general, though. I’m sure I remember a staff member once saying airily that you only had to click once and then you’d never see them again. But the point is you have to click on every different one once. And since I haven’t clicked for about a year, it doesn’t really seem worth starting to do it now.

Would it be possible to have a once-for-all opt out?

i have clicked it (did that when it first showed up yesterday) but it keeps coming back …. new “domain name” suggestions and some that I had seen and clicked on. The darn thing won’t go away.

I have started the above mentioned thread mentioned by raincoaster. The staff has commented on that suggesting it “will” disappear. I guess the best we can do now is wait.

Finally – a word from support:

    Hi,
I see that Mark replied in the forums earlier. The tip is supposed to go away after you click on it once. It is a setting saved in a cookie, so clearing cookies will bring it back if you do that sometimes. I was able to confirm that it does not go away in Firefox when you click on it (even though it is supposed to). I have notified the developers and someone is working on it. We will let you know when it is fixed.

So for those of us using Firefox, it doesn’t matter if you click on it, it won’t go away. Hopefully they will get it fixed.
