  Just to pick out the relevant information for you from the links that @mihaiapetrei’s shared…

  You can discontinue your plan before the year ends, yes. You can do this on the Purchase page. https://wordpress.com/me/purchases

  If your domain name or plan is outside the refund window, then it will stay active until its expiration date. Your site will then be switched to the Basic (free) plan.
