Another bug in the new editor (Categories)
-
Austria-Hungary used to be the name of a country. But if I create a category called Austria-Hungary in the new editor, it breaks it up into 2 — Austria, and Hungary. This makes the category 100% meaningless. It needs to be fixed.
Categories should remain in the form in which they are created. Previously you could even have a comma in a category’s name. Now you can’t. It will break up into two.
Thanks!
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

I know this does remedy the issue you describe, but are you aware that you can still create hyphenated name categories and categories with commas at the Post Categories page: https://davidderrick.wordpress.com/wp-admin/edit-tags.php?taxonomy=category?

OK .. I’ll look into that. Thank you very much. But I think WP should still log this as a bug. There is no reason to impose that restriction.
Thanks.

Hi there,
I just tested the new editor, and I was able to add a hyphenated category there. You can do that by writing the category name (such as Austria-Hungary) and then hitting the Enter key on your keyboard. That will add the new category without splitting up the two parts of the category name.
Can you give that another try and let me know if it works for you?

Correction to my previous post: “I know this does remedy…” = “I know this doesn’t remedy…”
Previously you could even have a comma in a category’s name. Now you can’t. It will break up into two.
Recently? I’ve used tags a lot more than categories, and I can’t remember a time — been using WordPress.com since 2008 — when adding two words separated by a comma to the tags module of a post editor (the classic post editor) did not create two separate tags. Same with hyphenated words if I recall correctly. For as long as I recall I’ve added such tags at the post tags page.

I use mainly Categories. And you can have a comma or hyphen in the Classic editor — and you still can.

Hi @davidderrick,
I just gave this a test on my side and recorded a screencast to demonstrate what I’m finding. Here are the four scenarios:
1. Inserting a comma in a category – Classic Editor: Doesn’t work (Expected as commas separate separate categories)
2. Inserting a comma in a category – New Editor: Doesn’t work (Expected as commas separate separate categories)
3. Inserting a hyphen in a category – Classic Editor: Works
4. Inserting a hyphen in a category – New Editor: Works
Here’s the screencast:
You can add a comma in a category in the Categories module (Posts -> Categories) within wp-admin. However, you cannot add a comma within the Quick Add module on an individual post. This might be the issue you’re describing. We’re working on building a similar category tool within WordPress.com, which should rectify this!

Thanks Jeremey. Inserting a comma in a Category in Classic does still work with me: I just did a test with a new Category. Plus it always USED to, but this functionality clashes with what is allowed in the new editor. If people want to create categories, they can do so by creating them – not sure why WP should assume that the comma splits a category up.
-
Plus the hyphenating did not work in the new editor when I started this thread. I have not re-checked yet, but maybe this has been fixed.

I just gave this another try, and I’m afraid I still can’t get commas to work in the Classic Editor on categories. You can see a screencast of my attempts here:
not sure why WP should assume that the comma splits a category up.
You can use commas to add multiple categories at the same time. For example:
One, Two, ThreeWould add three separate categories.

Hi Jeremey
But I don’t want to create 3 separate categories, and there are other ways of doing that. Since you replied, I’ve created one category with a comma using Classic. The new editor does not support this and as far as I can see undoes it.
