  What now? To get basic stats, I’m told to download a plugin, which needless to say does not work. I’ve rebooted and done all the usual stuff. Stop tinkering, WP, until you know what you’re doing.

  We don’t use plugins here. Perhaps you should tell us what trouble you are having with the stats as I’m not having any at all.
