Any News on Showing Ads on Blogs?

    moniescloset, if you didn’t record the tunes yourself, the probability of staff saying you are out of bounds and suspending your blog are significant. If you intend to make money this way (and I make most of my living off blog advertising and affiliate sales) then I STRONGLY SUGGEST you look for an independent host and use software from WordPress.org.

    have you looked at my blog? I’m not selling or promoting anything. I’m just documenting fashion as it relates to my life, it would be ridiculous if my account was suspended.

    I don’t plan to make money blogging…I’m just tried of working for some asshole, and it would be nice to be able to focus on my site full time. There’s a lot of things I want to do, and wordpress.com is just an intro. If I wanted to make real money of my site, I certainly couldn’t do it here, mostly because we have very limited control of the tech. I am aware of that.

    “But if i’m drawn to certain stores, and I send my users to them and indirectly promote those stores, then there is nothing wrong with the stores/business then saying “thank you” and wanting to provide me with further incentives by sending me something (actually I would much prefer the favor returned in discounts, but this works the same.)—”https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/any-news-on-showing-ads-on-blogs?replies=22#post-319359

    If i post an item that a)i’ve either purchased or b)would like to purchase, I’m going to link to the place you can purchase it from. I mean it’s a basic usability feature.

    For example, If I blog about a dress I’ve just bought….I will post an image, and clicking on that image will take you to the location of the item. This is a very basic feature. It is not marketing or promoting, it just usability. Why would I post an image of something I bought and not link back to the place I’ve purchased it from? I notice a lot of blogs don’t do that and its really annoying as a user.

    The discussion started when I asked, and mostly from a future perspective, instead of just posting a link, i would post a link with an affiliate ID so the store recognizes that these purchases are coming from my users.

    Anyways, lets move on, i’m tired of talking about this.

    “…but if i link to an item as something to be purchased, some of the items, I am using an affiliate ID.

    Hope that is ok…because if I recommend something and someone buys it, I want my commission!…haha”

  • Unknown's avatar

    The link with the affiliate ID will trigger an alert for wordpress staff and you will likely go to your blog one day and find it has been suspended, or you will go to your dashboard and find that there is a big warning telling you they have a concern about some of your content and telling you to get in touch with them immediately.

    Proceed at your own risk.

    WordPress has zero tolerance for user generated advertising or affiliate marketing and they suspend blogs every day that do it.

    Q do

    Content needs to be reviewed on a case by case bases. It is clear that I have no interest in promoting or advertising anything from the moment you enter my site. It is purely my tastes, my purchases and my style that dictate my content, there is 0 promotion/marketing going on so i’m sorry I even asked.

    Anyways got it…no affiliate’s.

    thank you all.

    You can certainly link to sites that sell stuff. What you cannot do is link to them using an affiliate link.

    I happen to spend hours every day answering questions on another blogging forum. On that forum I regularly see and read threads posted by Blogger (ie. free hosted blogspot) bloggers crying the blues because they make so little income from Google Adsense. Google Adsense does not even generate a check unless and until you earn $100.00 American.

    Straight Talk
    Currently the blogosphere is being flooded with no quality and low quality free hosted Blogger ie. blogspot blogs founded by people who have been sucked into believing that they can quickly and easily make a living of Google Adsense. Well, the truth is no quick and easy way to make money online. Making money online or offline involves hard work. And very few bloggers have the degree of expertise required to produce uique high quality content that brings in the massive number of hits on Google Adsense advertisements that are required to make a living from blogging. In fact, if the quality of your blog contents in the niche you are in is not already consistently attracting 1,000 – 1,500 hits every day then you will not be making any more than a pittance from Google Adsense when you move it to Blogger.

    Reality check
    In the economic times in which we live easy credit is no longer available, so it’s reasonable to assume that some companies may trim or even severely cut back on their advertising budgets, and we can expect the number of people clicking on Google Adsense ads will decrease. The reality is that you will never make a significant income from blogging if you lack expertise in a specific niche and you do NOT know how to:
    * be a skillful blogger;
    * create an archive full of unique high quality content;
    * structure a search engine optimized blog;
    * promote your blog via social networks and other means;
    * establish and maintain a faithful and growing readership (organic traffic).

    Twenty five steps for bloggers to increase blog traffic
    Twenty income streams for bloggers

    Conclusion
    IMO Matt Mullenweg and Automattic are very astute businessmen who are insuring that the free hosted wordpress.com blogging platform does not become another Blogger. That’s why I do not expect to see a paid option introduced here any time soon.

    @ Timethief

    I agree that it is not easy make money online…. well I’m getting 200 visitors daily on a consistent basis & i have just given 29 posts till now….

    i know i can increase the visitors to 1000 if i put effort….

    The point is that this Feature of Allowing ads should be added to WordPress thats what all of us feel like…

    One More thing In WordPress we cannot add widgets which have javascript involved for eg i cannot add Shoutmix or chatbox which are very essential…

    Regards
    Kunal.

    Given that everyone at WP.com has deliberately chosen a platform that doesn’t allow ads, when they could have a free Tumblr or Blogspot blog which allow them, would seem to indicate that people here by definition don’t want ads. Or are at least okay with not having them.

    You have said:

    Re: chatbox widget – please read this wordpress.com FAQs entry
    The Meebo widget gives you a Meebo powered chat box right from inside your wordpress.com blog.

    You have also said:

    The point is that this Feature of Allowing ads should be added to WordPress thats what all of us feel like…

    Re: thats what all of us feel like
    IMO you are NOT in a position to even know what all wordpress.com bloggers feel like, let alone to speak on our behalf. It also seems that you may have missed clicking the link and reading what Matt had to say. When he asked what feature wordpress.com bloggers liked the most the majority response was the most favored feature was that wordpress.com blogs were free of advertising.

    I strongly believe that you have chosen the wrong blogging platform upon which to situate your blog and achieve your money making goals. Please read this post as it clarifies the differences between free hosted blog at wordpress.com and self hosted wordpress.org software

    2 things..

    1) on the note about paying $30 per year to not have ads shown, I think that has to do with making money for WordPress, has nothing to do with us putting ads on the site. I was always wondering about that as I have set up some test blogs and didn’t see any ads, even though I hadn’t paid $30 for it. But totally resonable if that’s all it costs for me to run an ad-free blog, I wouldn’t want some ads stripped across the top or something like that if I wasn’t in control of them.

    2) regarding affiliate links…I’m glad I read through this post becuase I didn’t honestly know that. Even though I’m not doing a major sales blogs or anything there are one or two places that I use that I would write about naturally as part of my posts and I thought as long as I’m linking to them, might as well be my link, but I guess that’s off limits.

    However, my question is to clarify what they are referring to when talking about using the free blogs at wordpress.com vs. the free blog software over at wordpress.org that you have to donwload and install on your own server (or however that technically works). I guess I’ve seen the terms commercial blog vs. personal blog and was wondering a bit more about that. I’m a service provider/consultant and wanted to start a blog to write some posts for reference and was wondering if that would be a commercial blog or personal blog? And is the distinction really about the commercial blogs (over at wp.org) are where you can sell things/have affiliate links to your site? Any clarity on this would be helpful.

    Thanks in advance for your insight.
